Confusing, Yet so Fascinating

Summary:

For the first time in months, Raine takes a job, leaving Eda alone with their nearly seven month old daughter, Lydian. Eda wonders about how confusing kids are.

Notes:

I feel like this is the worst time I could’ve possibly posted this but oh well. Have some fluff! The Raeda tag felt empty and I wanted to write more baby fluff because *head in hands*.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Raine and Eda stood in the kitchen together. Eda was cleaning up from breakfast while Raine was at the table getting their music ready for a gig that afternoon.

“And you’re sure you two will be fine?” Raine asked again for the 18th time, “I can always get another gig sometime later, it’s no big deal.”

“You haven’t worked in 8 months, babe,” Eda said. She levitated the sponge into the sink, soaking it in the soapy water before enchanting it to clean the plate she was levitating. “You need to start working again, we can’t just be living off my potion sales.”

“I know I know… especially since there’s three of us now.” As if on cue, their daughter, Lydian, made her presence known by giggling when her parent booped her nose. She sat in the high chair at the end of the table, eating small circular cereal known as cheerios in the human realm.

“I assure you that the two of us will be fine. It’s just overnight, and she’s old enough now that she’s not screaming at every hour of the night now.” Eda shrugged her shoulders, continuing to clean the dishes.

Raine finished packing up their case and slung it on their back. “If you say so.” They quickly leaned down to Lydian and gave her a kiss on her forehead, pushing back her orange locks of hair beginning to grow. “Bye bye, pumpkin.” They then came over to Eda and wrapped their arms around her.

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” she said, placing an arm around their hip.

“I know, I’ll just miss you and Lyd,” They buried their face into her hair.

“I’ll miss you too, Rainestorm.” Eda whispered, “But we’ll be here when you come back.”

“Yeah.” Raine sighed. They pulled Eda into a quick kiss before finally letting go of her. Raine left the kitchen and soon enough the house.

Eda paused cleaning the dishes to turn around and look at her daughter, who was still eating cheerios. She didn’t quite understand kids still, despite her own daughter being almost seven months old, but she’d been figuring it out.

“So, kid,” she began, “Just you and me now.” Lydian’s green eyes battered over at her mom. She babbled something incoherent and grabbed towards Eda.

Rolling her eyes playfully, Eda placed a self cleaning charm on the dishes and walked over to Lydian. “You almost done with those?”

No response came from the infant. She continued to stare at Eda and eventually raised a hand up and grabbed her hand.

“I see,” Eda nodded her head, closing her eyes, “I’m sure today will be in-ter-resting.”

“Sweetie, you have so many toys, why do you like these keys so much?” Eda had been lying with Lydian on the living room floor dangling her keys while Lydian grabbed towards them. She was sitting up and appeared determined to get a grip on them.

As much as Eda was perplexed, it was an easy way to distract her daughter while she could rest. All she had to do was keep a spell going to dangle the keys and for her that was a simple trick.

For a while they were like this. Eda was sure an hour had passed by the time she got up to go get a glass of water. Unfortunately, though, this meant she had to break the spell. She didn’t want Lydian to get a hand on those keys.

When Eda lifted the keys up to herself, though, Lydian fussed. She scooted towards the coffee table and pulled herself up. That had been a recent thing she learned, how to stand up. Eda chuckled at this and dangled the keys.

“It’s just for a minute, Lydian.” Eda said, “You’re not going to be able to reach these.” She placed them on the middle of the table by the sofa. Lydian wouldn’t be able to reach them there.

Eda entered the kitchen and approached the sink. She got a cup and filled it with water and ice. For such a hot day of the year, she was desperate for a drink. She took a sip and held her hands around the cup in her hands.

Eda turned around to reenter the living room, but was shocked to find Lydian standing just inside the kitchen. Her stance was wobbly but she was definitely standing.

“How’d you get there, sweet heart?” Eda chuckled to herself. Then, to her surprise, Lydian stepped forward. Eda nearly dropped her glass as her eyes widened and her mouth opened.

Lydian was walking?! She’d just learned how to stand not even a month ago and she was walking!

“Oh, sweetie, come here!” Eda placed her cup on the counter and crouched down, encouraging Lydian to come to her. The infant wobbled forward, slowly but surely making her way towards her mom’s embrace.

When she finally reached her, Eda scooped her up and whirled her around. “Lydian, Titan, I’m so proud of you!” She pressed several kisses to her head as Lydian giggled excitedly, seemingly understanding the event.

After she sat back down on the floor with her daughter, she pulled out her scroll, quickly texting Raine.

‘There’s something you’ll have to see when you get home :)’

She closed her scroll once it sent and focused her attention back to Lydian.

“You did so good,” Eda told her, “That was seriously impressive.” Lydian only tilted her head, attempting to babble back.

Eda sighed.

Kids sure were a mystery, but getting to watch them discover the world around them and… just grow, it all made Eda’s heart swell with pride.

She realized she didn’t have to understand to appreciate and admire it.

This was going to be serious but have a sketch that turned out. Funnier than I intended.
