Work Text:
Basil was walking around the park of faraway plaza. He had his camera with him but he couldn’t find anything good to take pictures of. His mind had been much better thanks to the fact that Sunny finally told the truth about Mari’s death. He could actually think straight now. He realized that his flowers were in poor condition and regretted not having been able to take care of them. The second thing he did was get his dusty camera off of his end table. He had been wanting to take the perfect photo, but he couldn’t find the source material he needed. He thought of taking pictures of everyone again, but they just didn’t have the same chemistry as before.
Then his mind flashed to Sunny. He was supposed to be coming to visit this weekend wasn't he? Basil felt his face heat up, then he realized Sunny would be the perfect subject. He was a simple boy, he didn’t show emotions much but when he did it was beautiful. He was also really good at posing despite the fact he didn’t try. He always looked fairly photogenic. He worried it would bother him if he asked but he decided he would still ask him anyway. Without thinking about it he swayed his way to the secret spot next to the lake. He watched the familiar waters shimmer in the summer air. The waters looked like a darkish plum colour.
He made his way to the old picnic blanket, reserved just for him and his friends. He didn’t really have anything to do so he just sat there staring at the water. The old statue within looming with its hidden and unknown meaning. He took his camera out and took a picture of the lake. He had gotten one that was almost perfect, with a fish jumping out of the water, but something was missing from it. Once he was done with sitting there he decided to make his way home. As if pulled by a greater force he found himself right in front of Sunny’s old house. Nobody lived there now so it was an empty shell. He tried the door and to his surprise it happened to be unlocked.
Basil walked inside aimlessly wandering around. He found his way to the old treehouse everyone used to play in. It was his favourite place. He looked around at all the old things they kept in there, including the plant pots and the unconnected tv. The carpet had many holes in it now and was a dirty brown colour. Basil almost wanted to take a picture of it as a before and after photo for himself but he didn’t. He made his way back down and went back inside the house. Then he travelled to the room with the piano. It was still there, and strangely looked like there wasn’t a speck of dust on it. It looked bizarrely clean despite the fact that nobody had been living there or had been playing it.
Basil decided not to take it to heart and just thought it may have been his imagination. He drifted his way across the house, up the stairs, and into Sunny’s old room. The only thing left was a bedframe and a carpet. Basil was saddened by the familiar bed frame, he figured sunny hated it enough to not take it with him. Then he noticed something sticking out of the frame, it looked paper-y and basil decided to learn more about it. He approached the bed frame and leaned down to pick it up. It was one of his photos. One he didn’t remember taking or posing for. It was a photo of him, smiling with his usual flower in his hair. Who took this picture? And why did Sunny keep it? Why didn’t he take it with him? Did he forget about it? Basil looked out the window and noticed it had already gotten dark, he stuffed the photo into his pocket and ran out the house, making sure to close the door.
He reached the street that his house laid upon. He looked at his flowers as he walked inside the still and quiet house. He noticed dinner on the table that was probably cold by now, he realized that polly wasn’t home either so he took a plate. Once he finished his food he decided to go to sleep. The next day he went outside to go on another walk. He had completely forgotten about the photo so when he reached into his pocket he was surprised by the strange plastic-y form of the photo. He took the photo out of his pocket to look at it one more time. There it was, a photo of him, smiling and having a good time.
Why would Sunny keep this? Whatever the reason it didn’t matter, because Sunny would be arriving some time today anyway. He decided he could ask him then. Basil couldn’t wait for Sunny to arrive back home, he was going to hug the living guts out of him. He knew that kel, aubrey, and hero couldn’t wait to see him either but Basil and Sunny agreed to meet first and then go and meet the others. They were supposed to meet in the faraway park. Basil was super excited to see him again and was waiting on a bench in the park. Finally, he had arrived and basil waved him over.
“Sunny! I’m over here!”
“...”
Sunny walked over to Basil and sat on the bench with him. Basil smiled at him and gave him a big hug, when he did Sunny hesitated to hug back, but he eventually did. They both really missed each other. Basil pulled out of the hug because he had more important matters to get to. He quickly pulled the photo out of his pocket and showed it to Sunny. Sunny looked surprised that he had the photo, and his face lit up a bright red colour.
“What's this?” Basil asked cheerfully.
“..why do you have it?” Sunny asked deadpanned
“I found it in your house yesterday, I was exploring.”
“..can I have it back please?”
“Wait a sec!”
Basil pulled out his camera and took a quick picture of Sunny. He waited for the photo to develop before showing it to Sunny. Sunny looked surprised and confused.
“Now we both have one of each other!” Basil smiled.
“Cool.” Sunny’s face reddened.
Sunny took his photo of Basil back and stuffed it into his pocket. Sunny patted Basil’s shoulder and smiled at him. Basil grabbed Sunny’s hand and practically dragged him to Hobbeez. Basil knew that a new Capt. Space Boy novel was out and he wanted to show it to Sunny. He looked around the shelves until he found one that wasn’t miraculously sold out yet. He picked it up and opened the book to a random page and showed it to Sunny, his face lit up with happiness. The two looked through the pages, acting out the characters and making silly voices for them.
“Arghhh noooo! Captain space boy you have slain me!” Basil said, giggling a bit.
“Hah! I’ve beaten my enemy!” Sunny said loudly.
The two boys started bursting out laughing. They were so happy together. Basil looked at the time and remembered that they had to meet the others at some point. Basil grabbed Sunny’s hand and took him to Kel’s house to meet up with him and Hero first. They got to the house and gently opened the door. Standing at the door doing something strange was Kel. As per usual kel greeted them with a big cheesy grin. Sunny waved shyly behind Basil and Kel's face lit up. He ran toward the two shorter boys and gave them both a big hug.
“Hero! Basil and Sunny are here! Let’s go!” Kel yelled across the house.
“Oh! Coming!” Hero responded.
Then Hero appeared in one of the door frames dressed in some casual wear. He waved to everyone and smiled. They all left the house with Kel letting his mom know where they were going. Aubrey’s house was next, Basil and Sunny lead the way. As they were walking down the street they finally got down to Aubrey's house. Basil went up to the door and knocked on it, expecting Aubrey to come right out. Just as he expected she did. She saw sunny and immediately went to hug him. Basil noticed that Sunny flinched a bit but was fine in the end.
The group decided to walk to the secret place they all loved. Hero had brought some items that he cooked, and the group had a picnic. The friends told stories to Sunny about things that happened after he had moved. Sunny in return told of the things that he had done once he moved. Sunny spoke of a school he started going to, but he hadn’t made any friends yet. He picked up playing the violin again. Basil mentioned that he started taking photos with his camera again. Basil took out his camera and snapped a photo of the group.
Once the photo developed everyone gathered round to look at the picture. Everyone looked pleased except for Kel who wore a sour face.
“Aw man! I was blinking..” kel said disappointedly
“That's alright Kel, I think it gives the photo more charm.” Basil responded.
“Kel stop acting like a bad photo might kill you.” Aubrey said bluntly.
“It’s not a bad photo aubrey..” Hero retorted
Meanwhile, Sunny took the photo and just stared at it. As he stared he smiled at the picture. It was a pretty nice shot and just like kel said, he appeared to be blinking in the photo. Basil looked at the photo and was happy all his friends were together again. Thanks to this opportunity he was able to get more shots. He took a picture of Aubrey chasing Kel around. It came out great but was a little blurry. Basil smiled to himself. It’s always great to be around friends.
“Hey Basil?” Sunny asked in his usually timid voice.
“Yeah Sunny?”
“Can you take a picture with the both of us together?”
“O-oh uh sure!” Basil smiled.
Basil held the camera up and pointed towards the two boys' faces. The camera flashed a bright white light. The boys both smiled but basil thought he may have blinked. Once the photo developed, Basil held it close to his heart. He looked at the photo and studied Sunny's features. His eyes gave their careful attention to Sunny’s eyes, one in good pristine condition while the other had a scar and was luckily not blinded. Basil thought back to that day and still felt horrible about being the one who had done that to him, but he's moved on past it and everything is better than it was now. Sunny and Basil were finally in a more comfortable position compared to when they were still hiding the truth about mari’s death. Basil thought that maybe his friends still blamed him but he wouldn’t let it get to his head.
Sunny was peering over basil’s shoulder and was staring at the photo as well. He hadn’t said anything about it but he was smiling too. Basil felt a warmth in his cheeks as he looked at Sunny. As he realized the warmth was practically taking over his face he gave Sunny the photo so he could look at it closer. Basil turned away to face Aubrey and Kel who were still running around. Hero looked just about as tired as ever. Basil decided to grab a sandwich that Hero had prepared. He took a bite but he noticed that Sunny was staring at him.
“Uh, what's up Sunny?”
“...”
“Would you like some? There’s some in the picnic bask-”
As Basil was in the midst of speaking, Sunny scooched a little closer and stole a bite of Basil's sandwich right from his hands. Basil was shocked and couldn’t help but stare at the black-haired boy. Basil looked back down at his sandwich, trying to hide his face. He felt someone wrap their arms around him in a hug, it was Sunny of course but Basil was still in shock from him eating his sandwich. The two sat there like that for a while just snuggling up to each other. It was nice. If Basil could have a million more days with sunny he could finally die happy.
The end
