   Joel had been her twentieth placement in her short fourteen years. She could not recall what any of her foster homes looked like, but she knew what a house needed to be a house. Usually, only four walls and a roof. The rest: useless technicalities.
   But Joel’s apartment strayed from familiarity. No locks on anything or keypads to restrict her access. Nothing that would suggest Joel was capable of ostracizing her in this small space that seemed to be at her disposal.
