Work Text:

Izuku smiled softly as he nuzzled into Katsuki’s neck, the covers cool as they were entangled between the lover’s bodies. “Good morning Kacchan,” Izuku spoke softly and sweetly, kissing the skin under the blonde’s jaw.

Katsuki yawned with a large, crackly stretch. “G’morning nerd,” Katsuki’s voice was deeper than usual as he was only half awake.

Izuku giggled before he calmed down and just breathed in sync with the blond, who may or may not have been falling back asleep. Suddenly, a phone began ringing and Izuku jumped with a short yelp. Katsukis chuckled at the reaction and Izuku’s cheeks flushed in embarrassment.

He reached over sluggishly to grab his phone, turning the volume down and checking the caller ID. “Oh, it’s mom.” He looked up to Katsuki who shrugged. Izuku laid back down and answered the call. “Hey mom, what’s up? You are aware that it is only nine in the morning, on Saturday, right?”

“Oh yes, sorry baby. But I wanted to call and see if you wanted to come home for dinner tonight. Toshi and I are missing you so much since you never come home to see us!!” He heard his mother’s sweet, pitchy voice complain lightheartedly and laughed.

“I know I know, being a pro hero is hard work mama!” Izuku smiled and shuffled back as Katsuki’s arms snaked around his waist.

“We can make Katsudon~.” His mother’s voice sang enticingly and Izuku grinned.

“Yeah, I think I’ll be able to make it this evening.” He could practically see his mother’s smile in the way she sighed. Katsuki rubbed his side soothingly, Izuku melting back into it. His body jolted as he thought of something.

“Hey, mama! Can I bring someone with?” Izuku smiled as he looked back to Katsuki, who had an unsure expression on his face.

Inko gasped before she squealed. “Has my baby finally gotten a girlfriend??”

Izuku winced at the term, remembering that she didn’t know yet. “Ah,” He eyed Katsuki again, who now looked uncomfortable. “Something like that.” He smiled at his mother’s squeals of excitement. “I also have some big news for you!” Izuku added on, hands beginning to shake slightly, fear beginning to grow and anxiety starting to show itself.

“Okay, okay!! Well come home around six, it’ll just be me and Toshi here!” Inko sounded so excited yet Izuku's heart was about to drop.

“Sounds great mama, I’ll see you soon.” He cut the call with a look of fear before he looked up at Katsuki. “Oh my god, Kacchan! What did I just do!?” He threw his phone to the other end of the bed, staring at it fearfully.

“Something stupid,” Katsuki responded, shoving his face in the back of Izuku’s neck, messy hair covering his face.

“Kacchan!!” Izuku shouted out with wide eyes. His body slumped and he groaned loudly. “Kacchan…” He threw his hands up to his face and dragged them down dramatically. “We have to come out to my mom tonight.”

Katsuki guffawed. “Nope, that’s on you, shortcake. I’m not trying to start that with Auntie tonight.”

Izuku turned around to face him with big, pleading, puppy-dog eyes. “Please Kacchan?” His bottom lip jutted out and he threw a leg over Katsuki’s waist, bringing their bodies closer.

“You little shit.” He pulled Izuku’s face up to kiss him, pulling him even closer with heated intent. Izuku smiled into the kiss, rolling over to climb on top of the blonde.

That means yes, in Kacchan language.

It was already four o’clock, Izuku had just gotten out of the shower and into a fluffy robe with Katsuki following behind closely. He threw his closet door open and sighed as he fell to the floor dramatically. “What do I wear to a coming out to my mom that I’ve been dating my childhood guy best friend for two and a half years?” He scanned his closet before throwing his hands up to grip his still-wet hair.

Katsuki sighed from the bathroom doorway, drying his hair with a shirt. He throws the piece of clothing into their clothing basket and stomps over to the green-haired man.

Izuku was breathing heavily in the passenger seat of Katsuki’s car. They made it to his mother’s house, his childhood home-- well, apartment complex, quickly. It was an hour-long drive, yet Izuku’s anxiety made him feel like it had only been three, long, hot minutes. Of course, Mama Inko would be accepting, she was the most accepting person Izuku had ever met. This meant a lot because as a pro hero and top-ranking hero-- interchangeably with Katsuki-- for three years straight, Izuku could say he’d met a lot of people.

Katsuki led Izuku up to the metal stairwell, just as nervous as his adorable boyfriend. He loved Inko, he was close to her but he wasn’t sure how he would react. The knock against the door was like pans clattering together inside Izuku’s head.

Inko threw the door open with a wide, excited grin shining in the darkness of the evening. “My baby!” She threw herself onto Izuku, who was now almost a foot taller than her compared to his younger years. Izuku caught her, matching her energy as he hugged her back tightly.

“Hey mama,” He spoke softly as his mom stared at him as if her whole world had just lit up.

“Come in, come in,” She ushered him, almost ripping his coat off to hang it in her excitement. It wasn’t until she came back that she finally noticed Katsuki standing behind Izuku. “Katsuki-Kun!!” She was shocked but she smiled anyways, greeting the blond with another enthusiastic hug. “Haven’t seen you in so long, boy!” She chastised, welcoming yet slightly confused.

She was expecting Izu’s girlfriend , but he didn’t say anything about also bringing a friend also! Goodness, she hoped there was enough food.

“I know, sorry Auntie.” Katsuki scratched the back of his neck with an awkward chuckle. She waved him off before taking his coat and hanging it up.

As she began to walk away, she suddenly called out, “Don’t forget about your shoes! I just cleaned these carpets!” Katsuki and Izuku shared a grin, calling back that they would take off their shoes.

Toshinori greeted them warmly after the two boys were seated at the table.

When Inko sat down, bringing a hot pot of gravy along with her, she eyed the table curiously. Izuku reached for the lid of a bowl containing some of his mother's delicious home-cooked food, but he was stopped by his mother's soft, small hand.

“Izuku, shouldn’t we wait for your girlfriend to get here before we eat?” Izuku winced and shared a short look with Katsuki. “When is she supposed to be here?”

“Ah… mama.” He started with closed eyes, reopening them as he continued speaking. “My partner…” Katsuki grabbed his hand under the table, siphoning courage to his shaky boyfriend. “Is not a girl.” He stopped to give his mother a short moment to process.

“What?”

“I’m dating Kacchan.” Izuku shared a soft look with the blond, who had a small smile present in his expression. He brought a hand to the back of his neck anxiously. “Uhm, for the past two and a half years.”

His smile fell when he looked back to his mother, only sparing Toshinori a glance. She was livid… sad… or something in between, Izuku wasn’t sure.

“Mama?-”

“Izuku.” Her voice was hard as she clutched a napkin in her hand, eyes set on the empty plate in front of her. “I can not accept this.” Izuku’s heart dropped out of his ass. Toshinori lay a hand on her shoulder to grasp her attention but she shrugged it off.

“Mom-”

“No, Izuku. I won’t accept this. Do you understand how dangerous homosexuality is? You could get sick, you could die !” Izuku shrunk back as his mother raged with worry.

“We’re safe mom-”

“That’s not it! Not enough! Sure you can stay cautious with diseases but Japan is not friendly to people of that lifestyle! People could hurt you! I won’t accept this Izuku, you can’t do this to me, to the family name.”

He knew a lot of her side was coming from the worry about his health and safety, but it hurt. It hurt like hell when he slipped his hand out of Katsuki’s comforting grip anxiously, or when his mother stared at him with tears in her eyes.

“My son is not a fag, I won’t allow it.” The slur was a stone to his heart and he gulped audibly, trying to hold back the flood of tears storing up in his eyes.

“I love him, mama.” Izuku tried to reason, he couldn't figure out what else to say in that moment as his mother stared him down, eyes full of hate directed at a significant part of his identity.

“It’s not right.”

Izuku heaved softly, trying to breathe as his mind processed the betrayal. His mother was supposed to be the one who loved him, always and forever, and accepted him for anything he did.

“I- need to go.” Izuku stumbled out of his chair, ignoring everyone as he tried not to black out on the way to the front door. It only took a second for Katsuki’s warm body to catch up to him, guiding him back to the car where Izuku sobbed.

Katsuki held him in the back seat of his car as he sobbed his beaten little heart out, comforting him with soft touches and soothing words. It was a long time before Izuku could breathe without Katsuki’s careful instruction again. He felt as if the whole world, the one that he had been carrying on his shoulders, had just collapsed right on top of him.

It was cold outside, so Izuku was shivering as he sniffled, Katsuki’s overheated body was the only thing giving him warmth.

“Let’s get you home, baby.” Katsuki muttered softly as he moved to transport Izuku to his spot in the passenger seat. Izuku didn’t fight him or do anything really. He was still in the midst of processing.

What will he do now? His mother was basically his best friend. He just lost his best friend. Tears tracked steadily down Izuku’s cheek as the thoughts ran a marathon in his head, causing his brain to sprint into overdrive. He was silent as he cried, staring into the distance but not seeing. He was stuck in his head and nothing Katsuki did could help him.

---

Ochako held him tightly as they curled up together on the couch. A movie was paused on the screen in front of them as Izuku sobbed into Ochako’s shoulder.

“I d-don’t know what t-t-to do now-” Izuku gasped as he cried, choking on the words. “She-She h-hates me!” Izuku's body tried to spasm and jolt but Ochako’s grip was too firm.

“Shhh, she doesn’t hate you Izu.” Katsuki felt the tears grow as he sat in the kitchen, pretending to do something productive in order to give the two their space. Instead of heading home, Katsuki brought his lover to his best friend's house, hoping she could get through to him. He wasn’t what he needed right then no matter how much he wished he could help.

“She!” Izuku gulped as he sobbed “She d-does!” The stream of tears was strong, but not unchangeable.

“She doesn’t Izuku. I think she had so much to process that she wasn’t thinking clearly when she said those things. Your mom isn’t the kind of person who couldn’t grow to accept her son. You just need to give her some time, it was a lot of change and information to process. You’ll be okay, Izu, you will.” Her voice was soft as she stroked his hair.

His tears began to slow and his sniffles lessened. The hiccups continued but were not as dramatic as before.

“Do y-you think so?” He looked up at her, eyes wide with hope as tears continued to fall.

“I do.” She nodded and sighed as Izuku relaxed into her hug. “I do.”

Himiko came over with a tub of ice cream and a soft smile. “I have chocolate chip mint!” Izuku was now clinging onto Katsuki, close to sleep as the movie played on. Ochako graciously accepted her girlfriend’s gift and was quick to snuggle up with her.

“Only you loser’s would eat that crap.” Katsuki rolled his eyes as Izuku reached over to grab another spoonful.

“‘T’s good kacchan.” He defended lazily. He was tired and extremely emotionally drained.

“Whatever, nerd.” Katsuki smiled as Izuku nuzzled closer to him.

Everyone was quick to fall asleep in their spots as the movie continued. The night was long, but not horrible. As Izuku lay on his personal body heater (Yes that’s all Katsuki was good for… well, and sex), he realized that even if he lost the closeness of his mother (which he would deeply grieve, no doubt) he had an amazing support system that would help him the whole way. He only hoped he could get through to his mother before they lost their bond.

---

It had been about two weeks since he had stood on his childhood home’s doorstep. His heart ran faster than he ever could and his palms were sweaty with his anxiety. Yet, he knocked. An hour ago he had gotten a text from Toshinori updating him on his mother’s condition.

She was getting better because she had time to process. Toshinori suggested that he come over and talk it out, as they had left on such bad terms before.

His mother opened to doors, eyes puffy and red. She didn’t say anything but opened the door wider for him to come in. She looked distressed, torn, and above all, embarrassed. They sat across from each other on the couches they have had Izuku’s entire life.

“I-” They stared at each other as they both spoke and Inko held a hand up. “Please, let me go first.” Izuku nodded, fingers ringing together. “Izuku, I am sorry.” She paused to let the words sink in, tears glossing her eyes, for probably not the first time today going off of her red eyes. “I am so, so sorry my son. I’m sorry for the things I said, the hurt you feel, the slur that I directed at you… And I’m sorry for not accepting you right away.”

“Mama-” He didn’t know what to say but she held her hand up again.

“I am your mother, and as a mother, I never should have said anything I did to you that night. It was so much to process and my fear and my deeply-rooted morals all clashed together, but that should have never led me to say the things I did. Because you are my son, and because I am your mother, I should accept you in every way, shape, or form. I am sorry I failed.”

Fuck, now they were both crying. Goddamit.

“Mama, I’m sorry for not telling you-”

“No, son, you are not at fault. You did nothing wrong. Please, don't apologize.” Her eyes flickered around the room. “Did Katsuki come with you today?” Izuku winced slightly.

“No, I uh, didn’t know how you were feeling so I thought it would be best is he didn’t come…”

Inko stayed quiet. “I am still scared for you, Izuku. I am still worried that one day someone will hurt you because you are gay and happy. But my worry gives me no right to tell you how to live when there is nothing wrong with it. You are my son, and I love you. That will not change, whether you marry a man or a woman. I am your mother, and I love you, Izuku.”

She opened her arms and Izuku couldn’t help but throw himself at her. “I will always accept you Izuku, because I love you.”

“Mama!” He sobbed into her warm, caring hug. “Thank you,” He sniffled as she played with his hair. “Thank you,” He whispered.
