It was a little scandalous. A girl Rebecca's age should not be sneaking out to meet up with a boy. Not even when that boy is your brother's best friend.
She just couldn't help it, though, she had to see Steve again. She missed his voice and his face. His thin hands and his sweet smile.
So she climbed out of her window, making sure no one saw her, and walked to Steve’s apartment. Technically Bucky’s, too. But he shouldn't be in. Rebecca hoped she was right about that.
She climbed through the window. Steve was shocked to see her. She managed to convince him that she had to stay, that she wanted to be there even when her brother wasn't home. She couldn’t let Steve believe she wasn't there for him. He needed to know how much she desired him, how big her crush on him was.
"It started as a school girl thing," Rebecca told Steve, "but it lasted well beyond that. You are the only man I want."
He gave her a sorrowful look and gestured to his skinny frame. "I don't have much to give you," he said.
"I don't need much, I just need you," Rebecca said. She paused. "If… if you'll have me?"
He took her hands and squeezed them. "Of course I will," he said.
She smiled at him and kissed his lips. Of course that was the moment her brother walked in. Bucky always had the worst timing.
Bucky looked furious. He pointed at Rebecca first. "You are meant to be at home," he said. Then he pointed at Steve. "And you! You've been seeing my sister behind my back?! How could you?"
"I… Buck," Steve said awkwardly.
"How long has this been going on?" Bucky asked.
Rebecca crossed her arms and gave her brother a foul look. "Approximately an hour and a half. I snuck out to see Steve because I wanted to and you can't stop me."
"I just want to keep you safe," Bucky said.
"Isn't your best friend the best man for me to be with then?" Rebecca said. "Unlike you, he hasn't dated dozens of girls. And I want him. I like him."
"And I like Becca," Steve said. He put his arm around her waist.
Bucky seemed to have come to his senses a little. "Fine. But no more sneaking around. Mom will kill me."
"I'll just tell her I'm visiting my dearest brother next time." Rebecca grinned.
"I suppose I'm just going to have to deal with this," Bucky said.
"Yes," Rebecca said, pleased.
"Why though? This thing between the two of you?" Bucky asked curiously.
"Steve doesn't tell me what to do or how to live my life," Rebecca said. "He doesn't treat me as a silly little creature just because I'm a girl."
"And Rebecca sees me. The actual me. She doesn't see me as lesser or as an undesirable. She respects me and likes me for me," Steve said.
Rebecca turned and gave Steve another chaste kiss.
"I suppose I can't be against the two of you finding love, then," Bucky said. "And I suppose that I am happy for you."
"Excellent," Rebecca said. "Now if you'll excuse us, Steve and I were having a good time before you showed up."
Bucky pointed his finger again. "You better not be destroying my sister's virtue," he warned.
Rebecca snorted. "That's more your style. Who was it this week? Dot?"
Bucky glared at her.
Rebecca rolled her eyes. "Steve's a gentleman. We'll be fine. Now give us some privacy."
To her surprise, Bucky actually left the room. Perfect. She wanted some more alone time with Steve before she had to head home.
She touched his face and kissed him. He ran a hand through her hair.
"You are the most beautiful," he said.
"You are the best man I know," Rebecca said.
They continued to trade kisses and compliments until Bucky knocked on the door about 30 minutes later. Rebecca knew it was time to go. She reluctantly left behind her new love and Bucky walked her home.
He stopped her three houses away from their parental home. "Just one more time," he said. "You both are sure about this? I worry for you. Both of you."
"Steve and I will be fine," Rebecca said. She gave her brother a hug. "You shouldn't worry so much, it'll turn your face ugly."
Bucky shook his head, biting back an insult. "Get inside, Becca, before Ma notices you are gone."
Rebecca climbed through her window and waved at Bucky before she shut it. Bucky waved back and then she watched him walk away. Rebecca got back into her bed and smiled up at her ceiling, thinking of Steve.
This was the start of something good, the start of a real love. Rebecca couldn't wait to explore it with him. He truly was the only man she would ever want.
She fell asleep and dreamt of him. It was wonderful. She was certain her dream would be a good one the moment she saw his face. Things were always good when it came to Steve after all. Rebecca had known that from the very first day Bucky brought him into their home. Even bloodied and bruised, Steve was the best. No one believed her but Rebecca knew he was destined for great things.
