He'd been helping Sam with group therapy more and more often. His therapist was pleased with his progress. His medications were stable and his prosthetic arm barely bothered him since he’d gotten it refit. Sure, he still had some issues. He wasn’t going to trust himself near a cocktail anytime soon for one. But he was doing better than he had any right to.
Any other day.
Today, his mother had called. Not that he didn’t love his ma. She just… expected a lot. Like for him to come home for Thanksgiving. Even though Shelbyville had never really been home. Or for him to bring his ‘roommates’ with him. Which would be fine, if they were his roommates. But they weren’t. They were his everything. And he didn't know where to even start when it came to explaining that.

James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes was Captain America's best friend his story was painted all over the measeum walls side by side with the Howling Comandos. He was then recorded in the locked files of the HYDRA vaults. But there is more to his story, much more in between the lines of his history and eventual pardon. So much lost time, so much missing information, so much story still left to tell.
Please note that this fic is only the first of three potential future parts. This will be considered the 40s segmentPersonal note: This fic is very whumpy and an excuse for me to beat the shit out of my favourite character, because what else do you do with your favourite character than inflict unimaginable pain on them :) Please mind the tags and please excuse the fact that this fic is going to take me YEARS to complete.

Tragic background realness mainly consists of parents passing away, because who doesn’t love adult orphans. Discussion of funerals. Very brief homophobic interaction in chapter 18. There is no violence, but there are a few moments where you might think there might be violence. Overall this is a romance not a gritty, hard hitting documentary
