James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes was Captain America's best friend his story was painted all over the measeum walls side by side with the Howling Comandos. He was then recorded in the locked files of the HYDRA vaults. But there is more to his story, much more in between the lines of his history and eventual pardon. So much lost time, so much missing information, so much story still left to tell.
Please note that this fic is only the first of three potential future parts. This will be considered the 40s segmentPersonal note: This fic is very whumpy and an excuse for me to beat the shit out of my favourite character, because what else do you do with your favourite character than inflict unimaginable pain on them :) Please mind the tags and please excuse the fact that this fic is going to take me YEARS to complete.

But Steve–Steve wasn’t interested in dames and marriage and having a bunch of babies and settling down. Steve was interested in his best friend. His male best friend.

Bucky’s jaw clenches, his hand curling tightly around the coffee mug. “Are we?”
Steve wishes he could say yes. He wishes he could promise Bucky that nothing bad would ever happen to them anymore—that they were safe, that they were free. But they’d never be free. Not really, anyway.
Or: Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers know that their love is wrong. So they hide it with stolen glances and fleeting touches. Never enough to make the Avengers suspect. Their facade comes crumbling down when Tony outs them, and Steve is quick to deflect their beliefs. Now, Bucky has to find a way for both him and Steve to disappear before the consequences of their forbidden love catch up to them.

His Ma was the strongest person he ever met, and even she was gone first. Why was he still here? Why on earth did he deserve to be here in place of anyone else that had died before him?

And harley and Tony yell and peter cries and stuff like that :) it would also be kinda funny if at the end Steve figures out that he's bi and it was internal homophobia all along lol

After almost two years, the rest of the runaway Avengers are back, confined to house arrest at Stark Tower until further notice. However, Tony has a family now, one that he'll do anything to keep safe, and it doesn't take long to realize that nothing is the same as it once was.
Or, a sort of "five times the rogues (mostly just steve and nat) didn't feel welcome by tony's new family and the one time they did" but with the first chapter as an intro instead of one of the five times.
