His face, however, bears a flattering stubble lining the concave of his cheeks and bones. His mouth is surrounded by small hairs, his nose strong, and most of all, his eyes. They’re electric blue, certainly not from around here. He looks like one of those German settlers who’d come and ransacked his own home. Still, he holds that impenetrable gaze, knowing his own blue to be much less remarkable. The hand remains stubbornly outstretched, his lips forming a soft, pink line. Steve always had a high tolerance to pain. He had several chronic illnesses, and he got beat up a lot, so he’s good at dealing with being hurt. And then he got the Super Soldier Serum, and not only did all his illnesses go away, but he now also has an even higher pain tolerance due to the serum magnifying things. So, he’s able to fight in a war without any risk to himself. But, there is something that he always thinks about whenever he and his team go on a mission, the fact that he is the only one who has the serum. So, he makes sure nobody else gets hurt. He should be able to protect everyone. But, sometimes things just happen and you can’t do anything about it. Luckily, people are there to talk to.

Mostly, I hate myself. 83 years I've left it waiting. Left her, waiting.
The question is, do I man-up and press that button, knowing everything is going to change, or do I leave the past, in the past?

Summary
There's a lot of expectation attached to Steve Rogers' name. It's taken him years to prove his own worth - that he's made it so far in the USNA on his own merit and not just because of his father. He's close though - there are only a few more months until he graduates and gets to stand on his own two feet. It's taken a lot of effort to get there, and a lot of sacrifices.
Bucky's beyond the point of expectation. When your father and grandfather have both been President - and your mother nurses political ambitions of her own - brilliance is a foregone conclusion. He's just counting down the final months of his confinement to the glass cage of the White House and he's determined to put that whole world behind him.
But as the days standing between them and their dreams dwindle, Steve comes to realize he might have made one sacrifice too many, and Bucky learns that his freedom comes at a cost he's never going to be able to pay.

He was then recorded in the locked files of the HYDRA vaults. But there is more to his story, much more in between the lines of his history and eventual pardon. So much lost time, so much missing information, so much story still left to tell.
Please note that this fic is only the first of three potential future parts. This will be considered the 40s segmentPersonal note: This fic is very whumpy and an excuse for me to beat the shit out of my favourite character, because what else do you do with your favourite character than inflict unimaginable pain on them :) Please mind the tags and please excuse the fact that this fic is going to take me YEARS to complete.
