It is the marrow of existence in the Borderlands. At some point, you stop asking why you're here or if you deserve it. It doesn't matter in the end, because you are here whether you deserve it or not.
People die. Friends betray you. The world here is cold, indifferent, and immovable, and no amount of tears or rage can alter its course.
Shikata ga nai—it will never be helped.

Dennis Whitaker, in his last year of seminary, is delighted to be assigned to a rectory in Pittsburgh, and to the hospital chaplaincy that comes along with it. Finally, he's out into the world, where he can be of real use.
Slightly less welcome is Doctor Robinavitch, the senior attending of the ER, who seems to resent Whitaker's presence to the point of deliberate avoidance, even though the man is coming apart at the seams and could clearly use a friendly ear. Still, Whitaker is certain he'll find a way to make the most of the last twelve months before he's ordained.

Welcome to Volume IV, it is not necessary to read any previous volumes or letters since each letter is a stand alone work. Feel free to start reading from the latest day, or pick your favorite Princess from the chapter names and start there. This is not written linearly. Thank you!
No one wants to feel lonely. And the best cure is to have a friend talk to you and care about you.
Sadly sometimes people don't have any friends to talk to, so I am writing these letters to anyone that wants to read them. This way you at least have a friend thinking about you and talking to you.
Sometimes we take for granted our ability to lead a normal life. However for some, like the young royals of the world, they don't have the luxury of leading a normal life. Perhaps it's difficult for them to make friends? Perhaps they don't have anyone to talk to? Who knows?
We are a family, and family takes care of each other. So these letters are addressed to them and are there if they need them. But everyone is free to read them in case you need them. They are as much for you as they are for them.
