Tommy ran through the snowy woods, his laugh echoing off the frozen branches, startling a swallow from it’s perch. “You can’t catch me,” he called over his shoulder, taunting his brothers.
“Oh we could,” Techno drawled, trading a smirk with Wilbur. “We just don’t care enough.”
“Boys, don’t be mean to your brother,” Phil scolded, casting a warning glance down at his older sons. “Indulge Tommy, for once. It’s not like he’s gonna kill you.”
“No, it will,” Wilbur replied, glancing back at Phil, only to let out a squawk of outrage as his father reached out to ruffle his hair.
“Dad?” Tommy’s uncertain call cut through the laughter. The three of them snapped to attention. Anything that got Tommy, of all people, to sound uncertain was something that required attention. They hurried around the bend in the icy path to find Tommy standing before the body of a small girl, covered in snow.
Phil sucked in a breath, nudging Tommy towards his brothers. He knelt beside the girl, pressing two fingers to her neck.
“Dad, is she…?”
“She’s alive.”
