Summary

Summary
Mike Flanagan's Midnight Mass altered my brain chemistry in September 2021. So much so that I haven't been able to stop thinking about a certain priest and the girl he pined for for nearly his entire life. I've never written creatively before this project, but I'd dreamed up this story in my imagination for YEARS, and it got to the point where I absolutely HAD to get it out of me. So, here it is. My first attempt at fanfiction! Some things are canon, some things are not. I've filled in a few gaps and added a few original characters. I've altered a few things about character's ages and timelines to fit my narrative.
In 1972, Crockett Island is small. Quiet. Suffocating.
Millie Gunning doesn’t belong here- not with her husband gone to war, her faith long since abandoned, and a community that watches her too closely.
She walks at night to escape it.
He follows.
Father John Pruitt is new to the island. Too young, too curious, and far too willing to meet her where she is.
Somewhere between midnight walks, cigarettes on the beach, and conversations neither of them should be having, the two of them find something dangerously close to understanding in each other. -

He knows he should be worried, he should try to hide it better, because he cannot risk it, cannot risk destroying what they have, but he is too tired, too woozy, too hurt.
