Chapter Text
Jon surveys every nook and cranny of the living room and flips his hair back, perhaps a little confused, but with a smile slowly making its way to his lips.
Everywhere he looks there are packages of baby food and formula, onesies, books about childhood and children's toys, dolls the size of Tito, and enough diapers to start a business with Damian; Bruce and Talia have no sense of proportion at all, Damian has told everyone not to overdo it and that they might as well have done it on their own, but what Jon sees is the exact opposite of the so-called "restraint" Damian's parents promised. His mother and father also contributed - Jon bets that his mother picked out the stuffed animals, he could put his finger on it - and they did not "go easy" either, but Bruce has always been known to go overboard in any circumstance. And what better circumstance than to celebrate the arrival of his first grandchild?
Tommy's arrival was a roller coaster of emotions for everyone, a real lightning bolt that took everyone by surprise, but none of them could be happier than finding this baby. He can have a second chance, a family that loves him, someone to take care of him for the rest of his life and never leave him alone, and Jon is more than happy to be that someone. He and Damian never expected to be parents - maybe someday, maybe not so soon, or maybe they never thought they'd have children, Jon can't say for sure - but Tommy's arrival was... sudden, and they fell in love with this child as soon as they met his beautiful and strange gaze.
Jon still remembered the day he came home and found Damian sitting on the couch with that little bundle in his arms. For a moment he even thought he was dreaming, but when Damian explained that he'd found him in a cornfield and whispered that he couldn't leave him there, Jon had leaned in close, looked at the little guy's chubby face...and in that moment he swore to himself and anyone who would listen that he would protect that child as if he were his own. Months later, with the papers in order and Tommy officially part of the family, Jon is increasingly convinced that he and Damian made the right choice.
Lifting one corner of his mouth in a smile, Jon picks up a stuffed animal from the crib and brings it to his chest, the elephant-shaped stuffed animal - Zitka, he named it after the elephant lady he was friends with during his circus days - that Dick gave Tommy on the first day he met him. Without hesitation, without a second thought, Dick gave his child his most prized possession, knowing that he would take care of it. It all happened so fast that neither of them knew exactly what to do, but anyone in their position would have done exactly what they did and saved that child. That child who is now part of their world and has become the ray of sunshine that warms their lives.
And when he turns to the archway of the living room, when he sees Damian rubbing his nose against Tommy's little one, when he hears the child laughing in delight, when he sees him waving his chubby hands in the air, Jon knows that this day, this life, this single moment, it's everything he has fought for so far.
