Pick your owls wisely

Summary:

Tiny idea with consequence.

because its always the same in fanfic, so I tried something different.

Work Text:

Harry smiled at the beautiful owl. "Hedwig. I'll cal you hedwig."

The brown-feathered-beast didn't seem to like that, but didn't protest by pecking at him, so he figured it was a win.

Six years later

Hagrid cried as he landed at the weasleys.

"Hagrid?" Molly Weasley asked, followed by the handful of people who had willingly turned decoy for Harry with polyjuice potion.

"... It's..."

Suffice to say, he brought bad news, which didn't even seem to faze the very-normal barn-owl when Hagrid went over to the owl that Harry named Hedwig to 'tell 'im about 'is master'.

Harry woke up in a sweat and stared at the snowy-white owl watching him.

It wasn't Hedwig... but...

The look continued for a moment, then the owl huffed.

"You are definitely Hedwig's kid." Harry grumbled as he got out of bed, wondering about a dream where Hedwig wasn't Hedwig and an owl that wasn't Hedwig was...

Notes:

trope: every fic set pre-hogwarts, no matter what house, what type, if Harry has an owl, it's HEDWIG. The same snowy owl.
Another: Hedwig is smarter than the average, and always because it's Harry's owl. Of course any other animal he ends up with is going to be 'different' too, including Snakes, Cats, Dogs, etc.

So...
Harry doesn't get Hedwig. Also, Hedwig being smarter/so different from the 'typical' isn't because of Harry. So that doesn't happen to the owl he got instead. This has consequences.

the scenes in question: when he's naming his owl after returning to privet drive at the start of Philosophers Stone, and arriving at the Burrow from the Big Chase thing at the start of Deathly Hallows. For the latter, I think it should be obvious what happened instead at a particular spellcast.
