"He's late."
Albus Dumbledore frowned to himself as he and his deputy remained stood waiting for Hagrid to arrive. "Indeed." He commented, and finally, as the sky started to lighten, he murmured, "I'm afraid, Something may have happened to him en-route."
Minerva McGonagall shivered and paled at the idea. "Albus..."
"... Come, we must find out."
They found the undamaged, but not unblemished motorbike with its side-car detached mere feet from the bike itself, not far into the countryside short of Bristol. Dirty, and clearly hit with spells that missed their target, though odd that the bike was not damaged. After a moment of assessing, Albus concluded to himself that whoever, or whatever, took Hagrid and his passenger had been careful not to be detected. an Aerial fight over Bristol that would have caused the bike to crash properly certainly would have been. This bike had not been crashed. It landed.
The sidecar itself however, was damaged. A large dent from a concussive spell, presumably what caused it to separate from the bike.
The area around the crash was worse off. Trees burned, damaged and destroyed. Large furrows from where spells hit floor - going mostly toward or away from the bike in the near-direct opposite, but some sideways from the area of the bike. And all of the furrows had to be from the same set of casters, as the ones going away from where, presumably, Hagrid had put up a defense, were shorter, and widened more before they stopped.
Consistent with reflected spells.
Even signs of a few such not hitting dirt, but trees too, but mostly not.
What was curious was the lack of footprints, aside from Hagrids, though that could be easily taken to mean that the attackers never dismounted from brooms. Some of the furrows going toward Hagrid's presumed position varied in length, and didn't get wide enough to indicate short-range spells until they were relatively short compared to the furrows from reflected spells. Some of them, he then noted on examining further behind the bike, confirms they must have remained in the air.
Priori Incantatem can only check a wand for its last-used spells, but there were area-effect investigative spells that could determine what spells were done recently in an area, though not the order. Generally only a few of the different variations of investigative spells would give useful information before their own casting interferes with further spells.
Unfortunately, he hit that limit before he could use the one to learn how many wands were used. But he did get the spells. Which was a cause for concern, in part because he was sure Hagrid didn't know how to cast one of the more advanced shield spells, and given his 'umbrella' and how it came to be the home to the wand, Albus knew the man was limited in what spells he did know that he could actually cast.
The other part, if it wasn't Hagrid, then was that meant Hagrid had used Protego - another that he wasn't supposed to be able to cast, though he did know it and had been able to prior to his expulsion so many years ago - to defend and other, powerful spells, to cause the attackers to use the more powerful one.
Not long after his arrival and determining what he could, he left, apparating back to Hogwarts.
"Hullo Sirius." Hagrid greeted as he entered the modest -and muggle - home of Sirius Black.
Sirius looked up from holding a baby, Harry. "Did you get him?"
Hagrid held up a jar, tightly sealed with muggle and magical means, and grinned maniacally at the frightful and frightened rat contained. "Caught 'im in Leicester."
"Let-"
"No. When it calms down, Sirius, they'll start to think i' wa' you that betrayed 'em." Hagrid spoke, his dark amusement faded for seriousness. It wasn't often the groundskeeper dropped his joviality or other form of amused countenance, so it was quite frightening... given the rat squeaked in terror. "If'n they find you w' 'Arry and w' a dead Peter..."
"Truth Serum."
"Don't always work. Y' know that." A moment, Hagrid let his amusement at how they both together from one incident know that it doesn't, show.
It didn't take long for Sirius to understand the other unstated elements, and a dark unamused chuckle got out.
"Well... What are you going to tell Dumbledore?"
Hagrid grinned to himself, and started to explain at just what he did -aside from dropping Harry at Sirius' - instead of taking the fifteen-month old to Surrey. The past thirty hours had been hectic, from arriving too late to save James and Lily, but in time to start convincing Sirius not to chase after Peter, but still, getting harry checked by dumbledore, before 'not agreeing with the plan' and deciding to drop Harry off with Sirius... but then making it look like he was trying to obey Dumbledore's orders and 'got attacked' which didn't happen.
"I thought your umbrella wand didn't do much." Hagrid grinned at that, and pulled out the umbrella - and it was clearly different - followed by a wand. "Ri... When was that?"
"Oh, in abou', twelve years from now."
"Twelve years ago?" Sirius mumbled, but Hagrid heard, and pointedly...
"No. Other way."
"... You're from the future?"
"Me mind is." Hagrid sighed. "Things wen' wrong, y'see. Dumbledore's plan... didn't work. Came back to fix things." He sighed, and seemed to shrink a little, "Thought I'd be in time to save James and Lily."
Sirius didn't like what else was told that morning.
