    Field trips are absolutely Buck’s favorite part about being a firefighter. Every year the two elementary schools down the road send their kindergarten classes for a little walk over to the fire house. They give the kids a tour and answer a bunch of questions, let them try on the turnouts, then take them for a little ride around the block in the engine to finish it off. Easily the highlight of his year every time, occasionally making him regret not going into childcare. 

    On one of these fieldtrips, he meets the girl he and Eddie adopt. The only problem? She has less than three years to live due to a chronic illness.

    “Hey, what– oh.” 

    Eddie startles and drops the letter, head snapping up to look at Buck with his heart in his throat.

    “Shit.” Eddie scrambles to pick up the pages, folding them back up with shaky hands as he stands. “I’m- sorry. Sorry." 

    Wordlessly, Buck takes the pages from Eddie. 

    “Oh,” Buck says again, voice small. His face goes carefully blank as he scans the first page quickly. “I forgot about this thing.” 

    “Buck,” Eddie says, voice thick with emotion. 

    “Hey, it’s okay,” Buck says, smiling without his eyes. He’s not looking at Eddie when he laughs suddenly, stilted and awkward. “Guess I didn’t really figure it out, huh?” 

    Or: Eddie finds a letter Buck wrote years ago addressed to his future-self.
