Til the end of what line

Summary:

Bucky is trying, he's trying to remember. The thing that weirds him out the most is that he didn't know that soulmates existed. All he remembers is how the Winter Soldier was made and what he did. Bucky came to the conclusion that his soulmark must have been on his left arm. He researched to see if he would ever get to meet his soulmate even though he didn't have his soulmark; he learned that amputees typically lose connection with their soulmate unless they've already meet them. The pieces fell into place, his arm didn't come off in the fall Hydra took it off to remove his connection with his soulmate…

Steve Rogers knows something that Bucky and Hydra don’t; Bucky had already met his soulmate because on his left arm is a simple red star with the words “I’m with you til the end of the line”.

Notes:

This AU works where a symbol representing a person's soulmate along with the way their soulmate first says "I love you", is somewhere on a person's body. There are platonic soulmates for example: in the au I have Nat and Yelena as platonic soulmates with the Black Widow symbol and the words "It was real to me" and "It was real to me too" respectively.

Chapter Text

Steve wakes and immediately starts preparing breakfast for Bucky and himself. Ever since him and Sam found Bucky he had been living in the Avengers compound with the rest if the team while he recovers from the trauma Hydra put him through. Steve knows Bucky’s trying his hardest to remember his past but, it still breaks Steve’s heart everyday to have his own soulmate barely recognize him, let alone remember all they went through.

The first time Steve heard Bucky say “I’m with you til the end”, he didn’t believe it. It had to be some cruel fate of the universe. Even though they are rare, platonic soulmates are real but, as soon as Steve thought about it he knew that wasn’t the case. Fortunately for Steve, Buck was a lot less scared of having a male soulmate than Steve was. They lived together in their small Brooklyn apartment barley making ends meet, but they were happy, because they were together. When Steve rescued Bucky as Captain America he was able to reciprocate Bucky’s statement that they would in fact be together until the end of the line, whatever that line may be.

When Steve got to design the circular shield Stark gave him he knew it had to be the symbol that was along with Bucky’s words.

Steve works on cooking breakfast, quietly humming a song that Tony had gotten stuck in his head. Steve always loved cooking; it helped him relax and focus on the present without his life being in active danger. As he was flipping some pancakes he heard the smallest sound of a footstep from behind him. Bucky was trained to walk silently, but super soldier senses still let Steve hear him approaching.

“Hey Buck.”

“Hi,” Bucky said meekly.

“How was your night,” Steve asked knowing that Bucky’s time with Hydra still gave him nightmares and made it hard to sleep.

“Actually okay, I managed to fall asleep and stayed asleep. I didn’t have any nightmares but I didn’t have one dream that might’ve been a memory.” Bucky stared out the window as he spoke.

“Oh? Do you want to tell me about it, I could help confirm if it happened or not,” Steve offered, trying to push down his excitement that Bucky might have remembered anything at all before Hydra.

“I really don’t want to talk about it, It probably wasn’t even real,” Bucky responded, his voice audibly tensing.

“That’s fine, you don't have to do or say anything you don't want to, Here I made us pancakes.” Steve slid a plate over to Buck.
