    Everybody jokes about them, the museum knew about their bond so Bucky picks up on that and researches coming to the conclusion that they used to date and that now he's got himself back so Steve is probably picking up where they left off.

    Since Steve is always so fussy and caring about him so he believes that and starts acting like a couple but Steve's dumb ass is oblivious to it all until he asks the wrong question.

    Steve gets de-serumed during a mission on a HYDRA base, and he wakes up as his pre-serum self, with no memory of the war or the ice. He's a fresh-faced 21-year-old wondering why his best friend is suddenly buff, sad, and silver-armed. Bucky, still recovering from HYDRA, is uncertain of what to do in a new place and seeing his best friend back to his old self. He finds comfort in seeing Steve small again, Bucky figures that he can easily step into the role of Bucky Barnes again, but struggles with his identity as Bucky and the Soldier. Steve is left in this new alien place, wondering how he can look after Bucky while acclimatising to the future.

    Steve retires without going back in time, moves into a house across the lake from Tony’s (who faked his death), and is set up on a few dates. Somehow, the old and new Avengers become Steve’s personal dating counselors, and the real adventure was the lesbians they met along the way.

    “I think I’ve been in love with my best friend since middle school.”

    “Oh?” Steve turned to face him. Peter nodded, taking off the mask.

    “MJ. Except I was too busy crushing on the most popular girl in school for like four years, but then it turned out her dad was a supervillain, so that kind of killed it…”

    “Ah,” Steve said, as if this was the most normal circumstance in the world. “So now you’re in love with your best friend.”

    “But that’s the thing. I think I’ve been in love with her this whole time.”

    “How do you not know if you’ve… been in love with somebody… for years?” asked Steve, though the voice in the back of his head was screaming at him, You know damn well how, you idiot.
