White day is a very popular day in Japan, but in the rest of world, specifically Germany, it does not exist at all. This is something Isagi learned very quickly when his first Valentine’s came and went and Ness showered him with gifts upon gifts, yet Isagi showed up empty handed. At first, Ness was upset that he didn’t do anything, but then he explained the concept of White Day and how he assumed they’d celebrate their love on that day since traditionally it was reserved for men to show their love, and his boyfriend calmed down.
Isagi made it up to him the next month.
The next year he knew what to do, so he made sure to make reservations for Ness’s favorite restaurant on February 14th, not March 14th. Everything was perfectly planned, until Ness surprised him with reservations to Isagi’s favorite restaurant on Valentine’s as well. After a small argument followed by some laughter, they cancelled both reservations and stayed inside to cook a romantic dinner instead.
With both of them being hopeless romantics, they came up with a solution that would please both individuals: they celebrate both holidays, but Ness would give his gifts on Valentine’s, and Isagi would give his on White day. It was the perfect solution, and no more mix ups happened for the next three years.
Now, on their sixth Valentine’s day together, Isagi stands in front of Ness in shock as his boyfriend presents him with a small, black box while getting down on one knee.
“Yoichi,” Ness smiles. Isagi feels his hands tremble at the familiar smile he loves so much. “These past six years have been the happiest I’ve ever been, and I want to spend even more years with you by my side. So, my dear, sweet Yoichi-“ Ness opens the box, revealing a beautiful ring encrusted with blue jewels, “-will you marry me?”
Isagi opens his mouth. Then closes it. Ness starts to shuffle in anxiety at his silence.
Then, he scowls.
“You little shit!” he yells. Ness’s face drops, his smile completely disappearing. “Do you know how long I’ve been hyping myself up to do this exact same thing, only for you to beat me to it?!”
Isagi huffs and crosses his arms. “I even have a ring picked out and everything, you jerk. It was going to be so romantic…”
Ness blinks at him, too shocked to even do anything else. “You…what?”
“White day. I wanted to propose to you then, but you beat me to it,” he frowns, “all because Valentine’s day is before my day. It’s so unfair.”
Ness stares at his boyfriend in amazement. He just poured his heart out and did one of the most vulnerable things a partner could do, only to have Isagi pout and frown just because he didn’t get to do his proposal first. It’s so like him: to get all pissy because he didn’t win, even if proposing isn’t a competition.
Once the shock is gone, Ness can’t help but laugh. He laughs and laughs at this stupid man who he just proposed spending the rest of his life with.
“Stop laughing!!!”
“I-I can’t help i-it!” he says through his laughter, “you’re so ridiculous it makes me love you even more, for some reason.”
Isagi blushes at the backhanded ‘I love you.’ He looks away from his boyfriend, embarrassment settling in after he realizes he responded to his proposal with a tantrum. After a couple more minutes, Ness calms down enough to look back up at Isagi. He smiles again at him, the soft look in his eyes returning when seeing the cute blush on his boyfriend’s cheeks.
“How about we make a deal?” he says. Isagi looks back at him. “You say yes to my proposal now, and I’ll say yes to you when you propose a month from now. Ok?”
Isagi pouts again. “But it won’t be a surprise…”
“That’s not entirely true. I don’t know what your ring looks like, or what you’ll say. You still have a chance to wow me, Yoichi.”
Isagi glares at him, but thinks it over. Ness is right - he only knows that we will propose, but he doesn’t know how he’ll propose. He can still impress him and make him cry by giving him the most romantic proposal he’s ever seen! Even more romantic than proposing near the lake they had their first date near.
Isagi will wow him, just you wait and see. So, he nods and smiles at Ness. “Deal.”
Ness giggles. “Ok, then let me ask again. My dear Yoichi, will you marry me?”
Isagi nods again, his smile growing bigger. “Yes Lexi, I will marry you.”
(One month later, Isagi does wow him with his proposal and even manages to make Ness cry in happiness. It’s another win for him.)
