Reimu was laying in her futon that evening, a cool summer breeze swaying into the shrine. The cool air was a reliever for the heated battle that had just occurred. Reimu tried to sit up, but the pain in her back stuck like lightning, and she was forced to lay back down.
For some reason, she had gotten into a fight with the Moriya Shrine head, Kanako. She didn’t know why she picked a fight with her, but she was clearly angry about something. Thus, a battle began. Dammaku and bullets flew throughout the area of the shrine. Blinding patterns came toward the shrine maiden, and she easily avoided them. However there was one pattern she didn’t see coming. Marisa just so happened to fly by and see the battle brewing. She saw the pattern come from behind Reimu.
“Reimu!!” She yelled as she flew on her broom as fast as she could toward her. However, she wasn’t fast enough, and Reimu got slammed with dammaku. She fell onto the ground, defeated. Rare for the shrine maiden, but a loss is a loss, and she would have to accept it.
The last thing she remembered was Marisa Master Sparking the hell out of Kanako.
And that’s the position Reimu was in at the moment. Injured and not really able to walk, she grabbed a glass of water on her futon and took a sip.
Marisa came into the room looking pissed off. This came as a shock to Reimu, because the Ordinary Magician was always happy and cheerful, even in a time like this. She was a raging yellow sun, but right now…she was more or less looking like a rain cloud.
Even through her pain, Reimu sat up. “Marisa?” She looked at her. “Are you ok?”
There was no response. She put her broom down and hung her hat.
“...Marisa?” She called out again.
“I failed…” She finally spoke.
“What?”
“I fucking failed, Reimu…” Marisa sniffed. She looked like she was gonna cry.
“Woah woah woah!” Reimu panicked a little. “Marisa, i-it’s ok!”
“No it’s not!” She fired back. “Because of me, I couldn’t save you in time, and you ended up getting hurt!”
“You do know that I can handle myself most of the time, right?” Reimu asked.
“Yes, but what about those moments that you CAN’T? What will you do then, hm?” Marisa started to sob.
Reimu fell silent. She had a good point. What if she wasn't there in her times of need? How would she go about it? Marisa was almost always with Reimu whenever she resolved an incident, or even doing something like going to Alice’s for tea. She understood that Marisa had her things to do as well.
“See? That’s what I thought. You can’t handle yourself in that kind of situation.” The Magician covered her face and cried.
“Marisa…” Reimu was too exhausted to argue. “Please…”
Marisa looked up, her puffy eyes prominent in her expression. “Don’t you get it, Reimu? I care about you. That’s why I do all this…” She wiped her nose on her sleeve.
“And I, the same,” Reimu smiled as she used a pillow to prop herself up. “Not to say I get injured because I care, but I wouldn’t want to see you in a position like this either. Now…” Reimu outstretched her arms. “It’s ok. Come here…”
Marisa paused for a moment. Reimu wasn’t really the type to give out hugs, so when she outstretched her arms, she was a little shocked. But the Magician broke down and kneeled down right into Reimu’s arms. She cried into her shoulder as Reimu felt her silky yellow hair in her hand.
“Easy now…it’s alright…” Reimu’s soft voice was comforting to Marisa. It was very rare that Marisa broke down and cried like this. So the fact that Reimu was a shoulder to lean on was more than enough for her.
“I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!” Marisa’s muffled voice cried out.
“There there…” Reimu for once didn’t mind this sort of comfort. After all, Marisa was her best friend and longtime partner in crime. She was almost always there, regardless of what she was doing. This was one small mishap, and she was making a big deal out of it.
“Look at me, Marisa.” Reimu asked as Marisa looked at her with her sad eyes. “This was one small thing. You don’t have to beat yourself up. You tried your best. And also amazing job Master Sparking the hell out of her. That never gets old.” Reimu giggled.
“Yeah,” Marisa slightly smiled. “I know how much you love it.”
“Not as much as I love you, silly.” Reimu giggled and kissed her cheek. “I owe you one.”
Marisa blushed a little bit. While she was used to this kind of affection, the affection she got from the Shrine Maiden always felt…genuine. “Yeah, I love you too, ze~”
“There we go.” Reimu smiled as she caressed Marisa’s cheek. “That’s better. Now get some sleep, ok?” Reimu laid back down.
“Aww, but I wanna sleep with you tonight!” Marisa complained.
Reimu rolled her eyes. “Alright, but this time, DON’T kick me in your sleep.”
“Says the snorer.” Marisa smugly looked back.
“Excuse me? I’m not the one who drools in my sleep!”
“Yeah, but I’m not a sleeptalker.”
“Oh yeah? Well…”
A certain Hell Fairy, Oni and Komainu looked in through the crack of the door. They all giggled slightly at the sight of them bickering, and they all knew deep down that they would be saying how much they loved each other by the end of it. Everything was back to normal with them, it seemed.
