Enji tends to avoid situations where he's not completely in control or doesn't have the tools and experience to be the best. So when Hawks started integrating himself into his personal life, it'd been difficult to adjust, and he even pushed him away for awhile. He didn't understand the mechanics of dating, how to be a good partner and connect with his emotions. He's only just now learning how to be a better father, how is supposed to navigate a successful relationship? After hurting so many people he cares about because of his failings, he doesn't want to add another one out of his own ignorance.
But Hawks was persistent and patient. Way to understanding for what Enji deserved. The beginning was scary, being vulnerable enough to let Keigo guide him. Now he's a permanent fixture of his life. Like tonight, Enji couldn't imagine not spending this free evening anywhere else but with Keigo. The location doesn't matter, but laying down on his couch watching the rom com the winged hero picked out is one of his favorites. When he reflects on what he'd done before, it makes his chest ache with regret.
He maps out all the soft and sharp edges of Keigo with his eyes, and he's filled with a warmth that's he's never really experienced. He tried to create it with Rei, and he did - does - care for her, but it's a different way. This one is one is all consuming and bright, it always soothes his ragged edges after a long day.
"Keigo," he calls out softly and waits for him to turn to him. "I think I might be in love with you."
He blinks a few times and then grins, too bright for the room. "Perfect, cuz I might be in love with you."
