Work Text:
The sound of Eights voice stirred Three awake.
“Three, can you get me a water?” She asked softly her voice hitting the side of Three’s neck considering she was spooning her.
“…Why don’t you get it yourself?” Three asked her voice deep from tiredness.
“I don’t wanna get up. Please?” Eight asked her in that soft tone she knew Three couldn’t bare to say no to.
“…”
“Pretty please~” Eight cooed.
“…Fine…” Three said rather reluctantly.
“Thank you.” Eight said planting a quick kiss to her girlfriends neck before letting go of her so she could get up.
Three groaned and sat up rubbing her eyes, she really didn’t wanna get up. But she also didn’t want to upset her girlfriend.
Getting out of the bed with a yawn, Three stumbled through the dark room and toward the door with her eyes mostly closed.
Opening the door she shivered at the sudden chill of the air and regretted not putting on a shirt but decided to power through it. It shouldn’t take long anyways, just a quick walk to the kitchen to grab a bottle of water and then back to the bedroom to be cuddled back up with her octoling.
Navigating her way through the dark living room, she noticed that the light in the kitchen was still on. She figured she left it on by accident.
She continued to walk her eyes mostly closed trying to hold onto her sleepiness, sure it wasn’t a good idea to walk through your apartment with your eyes closed but she figured it was fine. She’s had multiple nights where she did this so she was practically a master at it.
“Ah! Fuck!”
That was when she stubbed her toe on the leg of the coffee table and stumbled forward.
“Stupid fucking…ugh.” Three grumbled annoyed at the pain now in her foot. As she was talking to herself she swore she heard what sounded like rustling coming from the kitchen.
Curiosity soon took over and she half limped her way to the doorway into the kitchen and discovered the reason for why the light was on.
“Cod…how many times do I have to tell you to turn the light off.” Three grumbled walking into the kitchen and up to the table. Sitting at the table was a sleeping Neo and Smallfry, her back was hunched and with her head resting in an open book, in one of her hands resting on the table was a pencil.
She should’ve figured it was Neo who left the light on. Ever since the kid moved in with Three and her girlfriend she had to be taught the basics of living in the city since she had been living in the wild up until then.
“What were you even reading?” Three asked herself reaching down and gently lifting Neo’s head with one hand and pulling out the book with the other.
Examining the book Three quickly realized it wasn’t a book but a journal. It had a worn leather cover that was tearing at certain points and the pages were turning yellowish with age. The other girl must’ve had this for a while.
It was open and from what Three could see was some messily written sentences. She contemplated reading it or not because she didn’t wanna intrude on whatever the kid was writing before she seemingly passed out.
Sitting the book back down beside the kids head, Three walked over to the fridge and opened it grabbing a bottle of water.
Shutting the fridge, Three went to leave but stopped herself turning back to the sleeping kid and the book sat beside her.
She knew she shouldn’t, she knew it would be a shitty thing to do…
“This is why no one likes you…” Three mumbled to herself walking back over and picking up the journal.
She squinted to try and read the first few words which weren’t easy to read given how sloppy the handwriting was.
“Cod kid, we really gotta teach you how to write neater.” Three mumbled as she began to read the first sentence.
“Dear me, I’m writing in here again so you can read this in the future and think about how far you’ve come.”
Three hummed wondering if that’s what this journal was, just a way for her to look back on her past.
“These last weeks have been crazy. I got to move in with the Captain and that octoling she hangs out with. Callie said they’re “dating” and that Captains a “simp” for her, whatever that means.”
Three grumbled in annoyance and made a mental note to have a “talk” with Callie in the morning.
“Living with them has been fun, I’ve learned so many new things, like how apparently you have to pay just to live which I think is kinda dumb.”
Three chuckled at that. “Yeah you and me both kid.”
“They also showed me how to cook when they made pancakes for breakfast. I think I might try to make it to impress Captain.”
The image of Neo trying to cook made Three grimace. She herself wasn’t a very good cook having to rely on Eight, so she didn’t have much hope for the kid.
“Other than that things have been very calm. We watch the tv together and laugh at all the funny things that happen on the screen. Although for some reason when this one part happened Captains girlfriend covered my eyes and ears, it was weird and I kept trying to see what she was freaking out about but she kept insisting it wasn’t for kids.”
Three remembered that moment vividly, a…non pg scene came on and not wanting to have the kid asking what was going on because that was a conversation neither of them was prepared to have, they had to stop her from witnessing it.
“That’s not the only weird thing that happened. Sometimes at night when I’m struggling to go to sleep I can hear these weird noises coming from the Captain and her girlfriends room. It kinda sounds like their in pain but in the morning they look perfectly fine so I don’t know what the deal with that is.”
Three sharply inhaled at that and shut her eyes in embarrassment.
“Coddamnit, why didn’t we think about that?” She said while repeatedly hitting herself in the forehead. This continued for a few moments before she opened her eyes and continued reading.
“Even with all the weird things that happen I’m just glad they let me live with them. I’m tired of being alone, sure I have my little buddy to keep me company but I like having actual people as well. They treat me nice, they give me food and shelter, they teach me things, and they train me to be a great agent.”
Three smiled as she continued to read.
“They all are so nice to me. I don’t think I can ever thank them enough for what they’ve done for me. It really feels like I finally have an actual-“
Sadly the sentence cut off there, it must’ve been at that point when Neo fell asleep. But Three felt like she knew what Neo was gonna write there.
Shutting the book and setting it back down, Three looked down at the kid with a warm smile as she placed a hand on her back.
“Anytime kid…” Three mumbled before walking away back to the doorway. Taking one last look back at the kid still fast asleep with her little salmon beside her on the table, Three couldn’t wipe the smile off her face.
Shutting the light off, she began to make her way back to the bedroom with the bottle of water and prepared to answer Eights questions of why she took so long.
What she didn’t see was the kid that still sat at the table slowly smile…
