Work Text:

One too many cups of coffee for a sleepless night

It was late at night and the dorms were quiet, as everyone was asleep or slowly falling asleep. Everyone except one.

Jeongin was standing in the kitchen as the coffee was slowly running through the coffee machine, staring blankly into space as he formed a plan in his head. He knew most of the members were asleep except one and he was determined to keep him company, if it meant he had to ruin his own sleep. If he was lucky, he might even convince him to go to bed. The plan he had made mainly consisted of staying up until he hopefully could convince the other to go to bed, but he was also fully prepared for the plan to completely fail, as there were many flaws to it.

Well, the main flaw being the member he was trying to stay up for.

Jeongin sighed and looked back to the coffee machine to see it had finished. He picked up the pot, filled his mug, and added a bit of milk to it. He placed the pot back in the machine, but didn’t turn it off as he knew he would probably need more than one cup of coffee to make it through the night. He took it, took a small sip, cringed a bit at the bitter taste, and continued to sip it as he walked to the bedrooms.

As he came up to the bedroom, he knocked on the door and waited for an answer.

“Come in!” a voice called from inside. Jeongin slowly pushed the door open and walked into the room.

“Innie?” Chan said as he looked up from his laptop, where he was working on something. Jeongin shuffled over to the desk, sat down in the chair beside Chan, and just continued to sip on his coffee in silence.

“Why are you drinking coffee so late, Innie?” Chan asked, as he looked at Jeongin with a puzzled look on his face.

“Because I wanted to stay awake to keep you company,” he said as a matter of fact. He continued to sip the coffee and looked at what Chan was working on.

“You don’t need to do that, you need sleep.” Chan tried to argue back at him. Jeongin just shrugged his shoulders and leaned his head against Chan’s shoulder. Chan let out a low sigh and shook his head as his cheek warmed up at Jeongins antics, then turned back to his laptop to continue his work.

They sat in silence for a while, as Chan typed out lyric ideas for the song he was working on, moving different parts of the song around in the program to get the right sound and vibe and to fit with the lyrics. Meanwhile, Jeongin looked on and came up with small suggestions as he slowly drank his coffee.

Once he finished the coffee, he decided to get up and get another one, as it seemed to be a long night with no end in sight and he desperately needed the caffeine if he had to stay up all night with Chan.
He quietly shuffled out of the room with his mug so as not to disturb Chan in his work and walked down to the kitchen to fill his mug again.

He picked up the pot and emptied the rest of the coffee into the mug. Then he rinsed out the pot, placed it back on the machine, and turned it off. He knew he really shouldn’t drink more than this cup of coffee, as his next step would be to try and get Chan to go to bed instead. As he stood in the kitchen for an extra minute, he decided to bring a glass of water with him for Chan as well.

He sighed as he realised that this was going to be the hard part of his entire plan. He shook his head as he walked back to the bedroom.

He entered the bedroom again, placed his cup and the cup of water down on the desk, then went over to the bed to pick up a blanket to wrap himself in it as he sat down again beside Chan.

Chan looked up from his work and lifted an eyebrow at Jeongin, but he just shrugged at Chan, gestured for the cup of water, and picked up the coffee again to take a couple of sips.

“You should really go to bed, Jeongin,” Chan said, as he took a sip of the water and looked at him.

“So should you,” Jeongin just said blankly back at him. He took a few more sips of the coffee and looked straight at Chan to challenge the older one's statement.

Chan sighed and turned back to his laptop to continue his work, since he knew he wouldn’t win if he actually decided to argue more against what Jeongin was saying. Jeongin settled in again with the blanket over him and the coffee in his hands.

They continued to sit like this in silence as the night went on, Chan slowly working through the ups and downs in the song and Jeongin silently observing and drinking his coffee. As he finished his coffee, he yawned, leaned his head against Chan's shoulder, and shifted the chair closer to the older man.

Chan glanced over at him, but didn’t move away and turned back to the laptop to continue working on some more stuff. He slowly felt how Jeongin leaned closer and closer to him and before he knew it, his entire body weight was leant against him as Jeongin slowly drifted off to sleep on his shoulder. As he realised that Jeongin had fallen asleep, he stopped what he was working on for a moment and looked at Jeongin with fondness in his eyes. He sat for a little while, just looking at Jeongin and thinking about the whole situation and how they had ended up here.

His lips twitched into a small smile as he thought about how sweet and kind the other boy’s gesture was to stay up with him as he worked, refusing to go to sleep and having a great deal of caffeine to keep himself awake, even though it clearly didn’t work for him as he was snoozing away on Chan’s shoulder.

He turned back to his work and tried to continue working on his work, while the weight of Jeongin was slowly tilting him to the side.

Chan sighed again and shifted around in the chair and tried to nudge the snoozing boy awake.

“Innie, please go to bed,” Chan said in a quiet voice. Jeongin opened his eyes slightly, shrugged and snuggled closer to Chan, without fully crawling into his lap.

“So should Channie-hyung,” Jeongin said in a low tired voice.

Chan looked up at the ceiling, uttered a tired noise, then turned back to the laptop and started saving what he had been working on and closed the programs. At last he turned off his laptop and started to turn towards Jeongin again to get the boy to get up, so they could head to bed.

As he turned around he realised that Jeongin had fully smushed his head into the junction between his neck and shoulder and was holding onto his arm as he snored quietly. Chan looked at him for a few seconds and decided to try and shift Jeongin around so he could lift him up and carry him off to bed.

With a small groan and a bit more shuffling around, he managed to get Jeongin manoeuvred around so he could carry him better. Once he had managed to get him properly up in his arms, he noticed a flaw in the plan.

His door was closed shut and he did not have a free hand to open the door and carry Jeongin to his own bedroom.

He looked around and decided that he could just sleep the night in his bed, since it wouldn’t have been the first time they shared a bed with each other. It wasn’t uncommon for any of the members to share beds at all.

So he carried the boy over to his bed, laid him down on it, and delicately manoeuvred the boy around so he could get him under the covers and tucked into bed. Once he finished tucking Jeongin in, he started getting himself ready for bed. He moved around his room to find a t-shirt to sleep in and some shorts to change into, so he wouldn’t sleep in the same clothes he had been wearing all day. Once he managed to find some, he changed into them, threw the dirty clothes in the laundry hamper, and started folding up the blanket that Jeongin had been wearing before he fell asleep. Chan placed the blanket on one of the chairs and went over to the bed.

He looked at the sleeping figure on the bed with a fond look on his face, shook his head and got into the bed beside Jeongin, who immediately turned over and cuddled up to Chan, who tensed up and didn’t really know what to do at that moment. Should he cuddle Jeongin back or try to move them around to separate them? In the end, Jeongin decided for him by laying his head on his chest, wrapping his arm tightly around Chan’s waist with a soft snore, and sleeping on.

Chan wrapped his arms around Jeongin with a soft hum and pulled him closer. “Goodnight, Innie,” he whispered quietly and closed his eyes and before sleep overtook him, he heard a quiet, “Goodnight, Channie-hyung.”

He smiled and held Jeongin tighter as he fell into a deep sleep.
