Kagerou was taking a stroll around the Misty Lake. It was sunny today, however the mist made it look foggy. She hummed to herself as she basked in the mist, the cool air on her fur.
As soon as she came near the lake’s edge, Kagerou saw a figure from beneath the surface. Within seconds, the figure popped up from the water. It was none other than her best friend, Wakasagihime.
“Good Morning!” The Mermaid cheerfully spoke to her.
“And a good morning to you!” The Werewolf smiled and sat, dipping her feet into the cool water.
Kagerou had known Wakasagihime for a long time now. They had become friends by the Grassroots Youkai Network. They became fast friends, and found many interests they shared. Almost every day, The Werewolf came to the Misty Lake to at least say hi to her. Wakasagihime was someone close to her heart.
But as of recent…she was thinking about something else besides friendship. She had been reading a lot of romance novels, that was a secret interest she had. She loved the amount of detail the author put into just one scene sometimes, and the development of the characters as they explored their feelings. And one day she had a thought. What if she was in a romantic relationship? Could it even be possible?
The Werewolf twiddled her thumbs. Wakasagihime saw that she looked a little antsy. “Kagerou?” She put a hand on her leg, to which Kagerou shuddered. “Are you ok?”
Kagerou blushed red. “I-I…” She took a breath. “No…I’ve been feeling strange lately.”
The Mermaid had a smug look on face. “Ah…it’s THAT time of season, huh~?”
“No no no no no!” Kagerou waved her arms. “That’s not for another 5 months!”
Wakasagihime giggled. “I knew that, I was just teasing you~.”
She knew so much about Kagerou, some would say that she’s obsessed with her. They weren’t entirely wrong either. She really liked her…but did she feel the same way? She wanted Kagerou to talk about it first. She seemed to be the less timid of the two…
Kagerou sighed. “But no, it’s not about that…I’ve been thinking about…”
Wakasagihime listened.
“...Romance.”
“Ooh!” The Mermaid clapped her hands together. “I love cheesy romance! Wait!” She looked at her best friend. “Are you saying-” She gasped. “You have a crush on someone?”
Kagerou shyly looked away. She was silent.
“I knew it! I knew it!” Wakasagihime was full of giggles. “Spill the beans! Tell me about this man. Is he handsome? Strong? Compassionate?”
“I…”
“I bet he takes you to the most romantic of places, doesn’t he? He’s so strong, he’s able to lift you up and princess carry you off into the sunset!”
“Waka…”
“I bet he could be a compassionate lover. Fill you with hugs and kisses, constantly complimenting you…right? Am I right?”
“I’m into women! I like women!”
Wakasagihime was shocked. This made her heart skip a beat. Did Kagerou just come out of the closet? That was a little bit of a relief. So could this mean the person that Kagerou liked was…Wakasagihime herself?
The Mermaid smugly grinned. “Oh…I see…~”
Kagerou blushed. “Yeah…I’ve been feeling this way for a while…I’ve been too nervous to say it…”
Wakasagihime giggled. “Well, is the woman you like as hot as the sun? Is she strong? Kind? Compassionate?”
Kagerou blushed again as she spoke. “...Everything you just said describes her…”
The Mermaid clapped her hands together again. “That’s so sweet! I bet they pamper you a lot, don’t they~?”
Kagerou took a breath and looked at her. “They try their best too. I know that one.”
Wakasagihime smiled and her tail wagged. “Tell me! Who’s the name of this person you like, hm?~”
And there was the question. She could either lie or tell the truth. There was no turning back now. She had to do something…but what if the Mermaid didn’t feel the same? She was sure she wanted to have a boyfriend…but, it was worth a shot.
She gulped. “Her name…is…Wakasagihime.” She turned red and shyly looked away.
The Mermaid looked shocked again, but this time, she also blushed hard. “Whaaaat!?” Her tail started to wag faster. “The person that you’re interested in is…me?”
Kagerou slowly nodded as her tail started to wag as well. “I’ve liked you for a while…but I always assumed you wanted to have a boyfriend, so I was afraid to say anything…”
Wakasagihime giggled. “Well, I’m into both genders. However, I seem to be leaning more towards my own…Oh Kagerou!” She jumped out of the water and gave her a big hug.
Kagerou hugged her wet body in return, not minding that she was now drenched because of her. She looked right into her eyes and kissed her. Her lips tasted like…well, fish. But she didn’t mind it. This was the person she loved. This was the person she wanted to kiss, hug, touch and pamper with all her heart. Kagerou loved Wakasagihime, and Wakasagihime loved Kagerou.
The two broke apart but still embraced each other, their love felt immortal, and nothing could tear them apart.
A head would be floating in the distance, blushing and giggling. Sekibanki knew it! She knew that these two would be perfect for each other. They looked adorable together. Not a hint of jealousy was in her eyes as she watched them from afar. As much as she wished she was in a relationship as well, she felt very happy for her two best friends.
