Summary
In the last violent years of the Tokugawa shogunate, the first Hakurei shrine maiden and her wayward attendant Mizuchi walk a country cracking under cannon fire, foreign treaties, and banners screaming sonnō jōi. Their duty is simple on paper: keep the border between humans and youkai from tearing open. In practice, it means cutting deals with smugglers, soothing terrified villagers, and quietly working alongside a foreign Assassin named Léopold and his tiny cell of shogunate loyalists.
Through alleys, shrines, and burning port cities, the Grassroots Youkai Network—Sekibanki, Kagerou, Wakasagihime—learn to weaponize human fear and belief, turning ghost stories into crowd-control while Hakurei struggles to keep “protecting” from becoming “terrorizing.” In the shadows, a new Black Cross—Ashford’s former student, now the Templars’ lone inquisitor in Japan—threads ultra-nationalist ronin, court nobles, and arms dealers into a single tightening noose.
As the march toward Kyoto begins and rumors of open war thicken like winter snow, shrine, youkai, and Assassins discover that the real question isn’t whether they can stop the rising tide of fanaticism—but how much of themselves they’re willing to drown to slow it.

For as long as she can remember, Kangashi Mikoto was born with a gift into the Mikoto Clan, a clan of which has existed since times long forgotten - a clan that serves the will of the gods above, rumoured to descend from Izanagi-no-Mikoto himself. From the young age of ten, Kangashi was appointed the acting Avatar of Izanagi for the newest generation. Each generation comes with newly appointed Avatars the moment they're old enough to take the mantle from their predecessor.
For somebody as kind and creative as Kangashi, she was inaugarated as Izanagi's Avatar. Although, Mikotos are bizarre in the sense that they are vessels for the gods themselves - for their hearts hold a unique resonance which allows them to channel their gods freely, and allows their gods to communicate with and even guide them, even in a world where magic and divinity is practically no longer existent.
Little does she know what her god has in store for her, especially regarding a certain task appointed to her by her god almost a decade since she was inaugarated...
