Sorry, I Missed You!

Summary:

A frustrating tale of just missing each other.

Notes:

Happy Broten Week 2023! Can you believe it? Three years and we’re still doing it. I must acknowledge the lovely SonChan who helped my organize my thoughts around this little story.

Chapter 1: Cupid’s Arrow/Pets/Mix-ups

Chapter Text

“How did I meet your mother? Well, that’s not an interesting story. You might as well ask me how I met your Uncle Trunks or Aunt Marron…but you know…a good story is how we got together. Have a seat and I will tell it to you. I think we have time. It all started when your cousin Pan got engaged while I was still single. I was happy for her and happy in my life…or so I thought…I had just turned thirty and was on my way to meet a certain blue eyed girl…”

It was old fashioned, Goten knew. Why a mix-tape when an online Capsulfy Music playlist would do? He liked a touch of quirky with his declarations of love, maybe Fyler would too and give him a chance.

Fyler, the quintessential girl next door, his dream girl since high school. It’s not like he’d been pining for her for fifteen years but she was always in the back of his mind as he dated around West City. His unresolved feelings for her and his intuition telling him she was the one made it hard, nearly impossible even, to take relationships with other women to the next level.

Now that Pan was engaged, perhaps Fyler might say yes to being his date at the wedding? He reached into his pocket to clutch the mix-tape he made and labeled ‘What I Can’t Say But My Heart Knows’ and second guessed his strategy. Did Fyler even have a tape player? It was very old technology but if she didn’t and she went to the effort—

“Pspspsps,” Goten heard a woman say.

West City is the greatest city in the world but also one of the noisiest. He’d been on autopilot on the way to the bar to meet the usual gang but the beckoning call of the woman shook him out of it. Naturally, Goten turned his head to see why anyone would make such a sound.

He couldn’t see much about the mystery woman except for her tight, heart-shaped ass ascendant in the air in a miniskirt. It was certainly sending him somewhere. One wrong move and he might peek at her underwear.  Cupid’s arrow struck him right in the heart. Her backside looked better than most faces! Even though he went to high school in West City, he never had the privilege of living in the city as a teenager. He may have missed out as a kid, but no more!

Goten thought little of why she was bent over and making come hither sounds but there was little that his Saiyan strength couldn’t solve. But how should he approach? Call out to her? Tap her on the shoulder? Whatever she was after, she was quiet and still about it aside from the sounds she made. She was bent down under the crawl space of a residential building, only her lower half accessible to the outside. If he wanted to tap her, it would have to be on the ass and he wasn’t keen on getting into that kind of trouble today.

As he focused more on her ass than anything else, on his approach, he noticed her bag was next to her, tipped on its side, stuff falling out, and totally unattended. Good thing it was Goten that came across her and not anyone else. West City is the greatest city in the world but it wasn’t like there weren’t opportunistic criminals around. He smiled upon some of the contents fallen and peeking out: a wallet with his favorite cartoon character, a matchbook from his favorite bar, a folded up brochure from his favorite museum, and a cool rock. He wondered where she got the last one, he wanted one too!

She smelled divine as he got a whiff of her as he bent down and used a, “pst,” of his own. “Anything I can help you with, miss?” he whispered next to her, hoping he didn’t startle her. Then as he looked around in the small dark crawl space at the bottom of the building, he saw a pair of green glowing eyes.

“Heh, thanks,” she said as quiet as could be. “Maybe your arms are long enough to grab him.”

“Is he your kitten?” Goten said, trying to make conversation.

“No, I saw the poor thing almost hit by a taxi and he ran under here.”

Goten’s heart swelled from knowing she was kind. Damn, this girl checked all his boxes, more than Fyler ever had, but what did she look like? Could there be real chemistry? Was this their meet cute? The first step was to help the little guy.

Luckily, the crawl space wasn’t too deep and the kitten had nowhere to go. Goten felt something slip out of his pocket as he snaked in deeper into the crawl space but paid it no mind. He couldn’t, not when he was so close to completing the objective.

“Shit, my bag!” she said and shimmied out of the way, giving him enough space to reach his arm into the crawl space to grab the skittish kitten. He heard her hastily scoop the stuff that fell out of her bag back in and say something else he didn’t hear but caught the end. “…take him?”

“Yeah, yeah,” Goten said. He was too focused on his ki, trying to determine the kitten’s next move. It was weak but he wasn’t scared, more curious and cautious. Goten’s hand touched a ball of floof and he grabbed it with a squeak. Goten held him hard enough to keep him in his grasp but gentle enough not to hurt the poor thing. The gravel made a sound as he crawled on his stomach from underneath the building and made sure the kitten was secure before he would come face to face with his mystery woman. He was sure it might be it for him if her face was as pretty as her voice.

“Ma’am, is this your kitten?” he said, all heroic smiles until he looked around to see no one about. “What? Huh?” He swung his head around for his mystery woman with the perfect ass but even with the sidewalks less crowded than usual and she was nowhere to be seen.

How had she given him the slip? No ordinary person could escape Son Goten and his super senses. That wasn’t the most pressing thing at the moment however. The poor thing in his hands was bone thin, dirty, and flea ridden with crusty eyes. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be with mystery woman after all. This little dude needed help.

Not forgetting to check for what he might have dropped, Goten patted his pockets and felt his wallet, keys, and phone. There wasn’t anything else and he wondered if he imagined it but that wasn’t important if nothing was missing.

“C’mon little guy,” he said to the kitten that warmed up to him immediately and purred. “We’ll find your mommy some other time, for right now, daddy’s going to take you home to make sure you’re alright.”

Goten grabbed his phone and texted his best friend his regrets. A kitten in distress was far more important than meeting the gang at the new club Trunks wanted to try.

He shook his head, Fyler was his destiny, not a stranger on the street. It was time to forget about those fantastical notions of the universe intricately laying out a path to his soulmate. Goten would have another chance to talk to Fyler.

As he tried to step away, he felt something underneath his sneaker. Looking down, he saw the cool rock that fell out of the woman’s purse. It was a really cool rock. By the looks of it, uncut and unpolished with rough edges but he could still see the blue color of the stone banded with black. He put it in his pocket in case he might see her again to give it back.

Notes:

I also have a special shout out to WhirlyDoodle who reminded me that really cool rocks exist.
