Chapter 1: She Hates Me

Chapter Text

Wondergirl I'd be lucky if she even looked in my direction. She's a literal goddess and I'm just a human. I don't have special powers like the rest of the team. Kid Flash can go faster than the eye can see, Aqualad can control marine life, and Speedy he's a sharpshooter. He could turn anything into an arrow; he even has a Jack-in-the-box arrow. Seriously, why did he make that?! Speak of the devil Speedy walks in setting his bow and arrow on the floor before jumping on the couch. He waves me over and I find myself walking over and sitting next to him. We sit in silence for a while then he wraps an arm around my shoulder and pulls me close.

"What's wrong with you?"

"Nothing."

"You haven't said a thing since I got here. Either something's wrong or you've been replaced by an evil clone." I can't help but laugh at that. Back then I was annoyed but looking back now it's funny to think about how I was replaced by a clone for a week and the only reason everyone found out was because Speedy said he's "too nice" to be Robin. That was two weeks before what happened with Wondergirl. After her and Speedy's bad date I kicked him out of the cave. I thought it would help her but it only made her angry with me. I'm glad Speedy was able to work things out with her and though I'll never admit it I'm glad he forgave me for what I said to him. Finding out he was Roy Harper made things easier. I wish I knew who he was sooner then I would've told her that Speedy says stupid things when he's mad but he never really means them. "I'm sorry," he says, sitting down the remote.

"What?" I turn towards him.

"It's my fault you two are fighting."

"No, it's not."

"If I hadn't ruined our date none of this would've happened. You two should be mad at me, not each other."

"I'm not mad. Well not at her. And it's not your fault. It never was."

"You and I both know I caused this mess."

"I don't know what's worse yelling in your face or not realizing till hours later that Kid Flash knocked your mask clean off."

"You were so angry you couldn't even tell I was me." We both laugh again at the sheer ridiculousness of that statement but it rang true for both of us. One thing we share in common is that when we get angry we always get blinded by it. Well, at least I can control mine. Roy's always had a short fuse. But despite all that, he's a great friend when you need him to be. Maybe that's why Wondergirl forgave him so easily. I wish she'd do the same for me.

"How do you do it?"

"How do I what?" Speedy looks up at me.

"How do you talk to her without being scared of what she thinks?"

"I don't."

"What?"

"I've always cared about what she thought of me. When we first met I thought she's gorgeous. I hope she doesn't think I'm weak. When we started talking I thought I hope I don't say something stupid. When we started dating I thought, I hope I don't hurt her."

"You did."

"I did. And it could've ruined everything between us. But she not only forgave me she seeked me out and gave me another chance."

"I'm sorry for how I treated you that day. I never would've let Flasher hit you if I knew who you were."

"It's ok. You didn't know. Besides, I deserved it."

"She hates me, doesn't she? That's why she always runs from me."

"From what I see. You're the one doing all the running." He ruffles my hair and then ushers me off the couch. "Just talk to her. I know it's scary but I can tell you two are gonna be best friends."

"Thanks, shafty."

"Anytime short pants."

"This never happened."

"What never happened?" We both laughed as I slip off the couch and start searching for Wondergirl. For the first time in a while, I think I may have a shot at being her friend. If she was able to forgive Speedy she could forgive me, right? I hear three distinct voices coming from her room. No one goes to her room. Correction, I've never been in her room. I start walking off when I hear Wondergirl saying my name. I gently open the knob and listen in.

"Look, I know you don't agree with what he did. But-" Kid Flash starts before being cut off.

"This has nothing to do with him!"

"That's why you've been talking about him for the past few weeks," Aqualad says.

"You can't avoid him forever," Kid Flash says.

"I don't want to talk to him!"

"He's our leader. It's only a matter of time before you have to team up." Aqualad says.

"That's the problem! I don't want to talk to him! I don't want to see him! I don't even want to be in the same room as him!"

"You don't mean it," Kid Flash and Aqualad say in unison.

"I can't talk to him, not after everything that happened." The words break me like a thousand knives piercing into my skin. She does hate me. Speedy was wrong. Before I can hear anything else I run back into my room hoping Speedy won't see the tears flowing down my cheeks. I slam the door shut and sob quietly into my pillow. A few moments later someone starts banging on the door. I guess Speedy saw me. Maybe if I ignore it he'll go away. The pounding keeps getting louder but I can barely hear it over the sound of my own heartbeat. Realizing he won't go away anytime soon I quickly wipe my eyes.

"I'm coming!" I jump off the bed and run to the door. Why can't Speedy leave me alone? The pounding gets louder with each step I take. After what feels like forever I grab the knob and throw the door open. "I said I'm- Wondergirl?" All it took was one look and I could tell something was wrong. Her disheveled ponytail droops down her shoulder as tears well up her eyes. She fidgets a bit and I find myself hit with an overwhelming sense of guilt. It's my fault she's feeling this way.

"Robin..." Her voice cracks and she sniffs before she continues. "I just want to say I'm sorry." Before I can say anything else she lunges at me and sobs into my chest. I wrap my arms around her and run my fingers through her hair. "You were just trying to help me and... I acted like a jerk!"

"You were defending your friend. There's nothing wrong with that."

"No, but I shouldn't have yelled at you." She hugs back tightly patting my hair before glancing up at me. "I know things haven't been the same since what happened last month but I-I don't-" she pauses then blurts out. "Can we start over?"

"I sorta like where we are right now." I can't risk making things worse between us. Every time we get close I do something and ruin it. I don't want to hurt you, I never want to hurt you. What we have now is best for both of us. At least I know you don't hate me.

"I could never hate you." She says and for half a second I start to wonder if she could read my mind. We sit quietly for a few moments staring at each other as though we just met for the first time. A thousand words flutter in my head but my heart pounds so much it's suffocating. I can barely get a sound out. I'm not sure I want to. This is the first time we ever spent any time together. Anything I do could make or break our friendship. What if I say the wrong thing? What if she doesn't like me? What if- "Robin?"
"Y-yes?"

"Can we be friends?"

"I-I-" I'm not good enough for you. I could never be good enough for Wondergirl. But for some reason, I'm not scared anymore. I wipe her tears and gaze into her big blue eyes with a smile on my face. "I thought we already were."
