Chapter 1: Childhood Friends

Chapter Text

[This story is told from the perspective of Sayori]

My name is Sayori Fujioka. There's a lot of things I could say to describe myself... amazingly talented, energetic, friendly... well, I'd *like* to be seen that way!

Well, actually, there's another word that describes me pretty well too.

Social.

You see, I've begun to start trying to be noticed more by... uh... um... let's say a... certain someone.

And the school I go to is FULL of special clubs for everyone to enjoy and take part in! And... I'm actually the vice president of one!

Well, sure, it was a self elected title, but still... being a vice president comes with great responsibility you know!

But before I go into more detail about being a vice president... you probably want to know what club I'm part of!

Well, here we go... try not to squeal in excitement!

The Doki Doki Literature Club!

But yeah, let's go back to vice president responsibilities!

Well, the leader of the Literature Club, Monika Asano, told me that one of my 'duties' as the vice president would be to get more people to join the club!

And today, my plans will finally work.

You see, most people are really uninterested in getting memories AND just want to be NEETs, disconnected from the real world.

But... I finally managed to save someone from becoming an unemployed loser... my neighbour, childhood friend, and... um, crush... MC!

You see, a couple of months ago, he promised he would join a club. I'm not actually sure how much he was listening to me... he often seems to space out when I get talking... but... a promise is a promise, right? And what better club to join than a Literature Club?

However, if he really would join a club (which he would; I was going to force him to), he would likely join the Anime Club... can you even THINK of anything more boring?

I swear the Anime Club is made up of freaky first-years, wishing THEY were disconnected from the real world.

So of course, I can't let dear MC fall into their clutches!

So, as soon as he made the decision to join a club, I spoke to the rest of our club members, and told them that he was joining the club!

And I know MC well enough to know that he'd NEVER refuse to join a club if it made others more sad...

The day I began to put my plan together started wonderfully. The sky was blue, the birds singing, the people walking down the street... uh... walking down the street?

And... I had overslept, AGAIN. Unfortunately, oversleeping was a bad habit of mine, that I simply couldn't get rid of! Still, I had made it on to the street. Time to put Part 1 of my plan into action.

Eep! I suddenly turned my head to the side. MC had just walked past me... I had almost missed him!

I darted in front of him, and waved my hand. "Heeeeyyy!" I saw him sigh in annoyance though, and winced. That... wasn't meant to happen.

"I overslept, again!" I giggled a bit. He smirked a bit if that, as I continued speaking. "I still caught up to you though!"

"State the obvious," he said, laughing at me. Was that good or bad? I couldn't really tell...

"Still, you better not have ignored me... that would be such a mean thing to do!" I stuck out my bottom lip slightly,  as though I was pouting, and giggled.

"..." he paused slightly, before speaking again. "Well, if people stare at you for acting weird or something, I don't really want them to think that we're a couple or something..."

Ouch. Had he already rejected my... feelings? Well, I shouldn't even be worrying about that right now! I needed to concentrate on the Literature Club!

"Heh..."

As we walked towards school, I brought up what he had said about joining a club. Although at first he had no memories of promising to join a club, he eventually said he would join the Anime Club.

Predictable, but... I needed to stop this conversation from going down the wrong route.

"Hmmm... I'm not sure," I told him. "I'm pretty sure the Anime Club is fully booked..."

He sighed. "Oh, well..."

Just as he was about to walk through the school gates, I ran forward once more.

"No, wait!" As soon he turned towards me, I continued speaking. "Can you at least promise me that you'll look for a club?"

He reluctantly agreed to look for an available club to join, and I walked into my first lesson ecstatic.

Time for Part 2 of my plan!

As soon as the bell rung, signalling the end of school, I ran down the corridors towards MC's classroom, despite shouts from teachers and prefects to 'SLOW DOWN!'

As soon as I walked into the classroom, I saw he was the only one left, putting his school equipment away in his bag.

"Hi again MC!" I called cheerfully as I entered.

He sighed. "Sayori..."

"Hi MC! Hey, I checked the clubs list... and I noticed you never actually did sign up for a club! Which means, you now have to join my club! You know... the Literature Club?"

I heard him sigh again. Like, jeez, how many times had he exhaled so heavily today?

"Sayori, there is NO WAY that I am joining your club-"

I nervously cut him off. It looked like I would have to confess...

"Uh... I may have told the other members of the club that you would join... and one of them made cupcakes and..."

I trailed off nervously as I saw him glaring at me. My previous high spirits sank lower than the Mariana Trench.

"Don't make comments you can't keep!" he reprimanded me. "But still... I'll come... if only for a cupcake."

I smiled.

He didn't know it, but he had just sold his soul for a cupcake...

Notes:

So, there we have it! The end of our first chapter!

I'm sorry if this didn't quite live up to your expectations, this is my first time writing on AO3 so the formatting and style may be a *little* off.

I'm hoping to make this fanfiction into a full version of Doki Doki Literature Club, with with each act told by each member (excluding MC.)

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and if you enjoyed it, please leave a comment and kudos!

Remember to stay safe IRL too, and enjoy your time!

Devon out!
