Work Text:
Joe and Nicky jumped into the first loch, they saw to wash off the dirt after the mission, but Nile refused to do it because there was no way in hell, that she would jump into a cold loch in April when there were only 53 miles to the nearest safe house and a hot shower.
Joe was driving, while Nicky sat next to him discussing where to go next. Nile didn't hear any of the conversation coming from the front seat because she was admiring the Schottish highland at dawn. Suddenly Joe slammed the brakes.
Joe: "Sorry to inform you, Nile. Your hot shower has to wait."
Nile: "Why?"
Nicky: "Sheep on the road. We won't go anywhere before they move along."
They got out of the car and found them surrounded by at least 75 sheep.
Nile: "Great. Any idea how we can get them off the road?"
Joe pulled himself up on the car's roof before he pulled Nicky up.
Joe: "Let them be. They won't eat you."
Nicky placed his head in Joe's lap and they merged their fingers together.
Nile: "Thanks, I know that. And what are you doing?"
Nicky: "Watching the sun rising. And being grateful that we got another day together."
Joe: "And you say you aren't an incurable romantic."
Joe smiled as he bend down to kiss Nicky. Nile looked at all the sheep and their lambs. It was there she noticed why the sheep had stopped at the road.
Nile: "One of them is giving birth. Should I help?"
Nicky: "No, let nature help the sheep. It's the best you can do."
Joe: "So, why don't you join us up here? There is something magical about the sun rising."
Joe offered Nile a hand and she took it. Nicky sat up so there also was space for Nile. When Nile sat on the car's roof, she had to admit that the men was right.
Nile: "Have you ever been shepherds?"
Nicky: "Yes, a long time ago. We needed to do something after a war that the world has forgotten all about."
Joe: "So, we bought six sheep and did that for a decade."
Nicky: "You mean I looked after the sheep because you were busy painting the landscape."
Nile smirking: "With landscape you mean you, right?"
Joe: "There might have been one or two paintings with Nicky amongst the other paintings. Have you seen how beautiful he is? So, why shouldn't I paint him?"
Joe looked lovestruck at Nicky, who blushed.
Nicky: "Actually, Joe did help me with the sheep. He made sure that we all had a roof over our heads and that we were kept safe."
Joe: "Of course, I would do that. I did promise to keep you safe a long time ago."
Nile once again didn't pay attention to the conversation next to her. She found her phone and started to take pictures of the landscape. When she looked through the pictures there was one picture she especially liked.
Nile: "Joe, if I pay you could I ask you to paint this picture for me?"
Nile handed Joe her phone.
Joe: "Sure, but you don't have to pay me. See it as a Christmas gift."
Nile: "Thanks. What are you looking at, Nicky?"
Nicky: "The new lamb."
Nile might have made a noise when she how cute the new lamb was. It took another hour before the sheep and lambs moved on.
Joe: "So, should we stay or..."
Nile: "Drive to the safe house so I can have the hot shower."
Joe: "Why? There's a perfectly fine loch over there."
Nile: "Fine, you do that while I drive back to the safe house."
Joe: "How? You don't have the car keys. I do..."
Nile held up the car keys with a smile.
Nile: "You should really not leave the car keys behind when you leave the car."
Nicky: "Nile actually does have a point. Have you forgotten how the French soldiers got into our safe house?"
Joe placed a finger on Nicky's lips: "Shhh, we don't talk about it. We agreed on that."
Nile: "Please tell me, Nicky."
Nicky: "Well, it all started when the Sun King ruled France where Joe decided to get a job at his court..."
Joe: "Please, Nicky. I do anything if you stop telling."
Nicky gave Joe a mischievous smile as he got into the car. It would be a long ride back to the safe house.
