Work Text:

“Hey, Yuki…You’re looking kind of….green.”

“Yeah man you really don’t look good at all.”

Lifting his head, Yuki smiled, trying to reassure his friends that he was okay.

But he wasn’t.

And there was really no way he could hide it.

“Sorry, that last ride made me kind of dizzy. I think I need to sit out for a while.”

Karasu nodded his head, a serious look on his face as he Yuki up and down, trying to reassure himself that the other boy wouldn’t pass out immediately after they left.  Hiori looked worried, and he tugged at the edges of his sleeves as he glanced between the three other members of their group.

“Are you sure, Yuki? We can call it a night if you want? Do you need anything?”

Otoya sighed, dramatic as always, and threw an arm over Yuki’s shoulder.

“You two get out of here, I’ll stay with Yuki till he feels better.  Go ride the tunnel of love or piss your pants in the haunted house or something.”

Karasu nodded solemnly, still worried about his friend, but happy nonetheless to finally have a reason to escape the group with his boyfriend. Hiori’s demeanor was much the same, and he spared them one last look over his shoulder as they walked away, before turning to Karasu with a happy little grin on his face.

After they had gone, Otoya grabbed him by the arm, dragging him over to a bench by a vending machine. Yuki plopped down, anything but graceful, and pushed his glasses back into his hair as he closed his eyes, trying to settle his spinning head and his tumbling stomach.  He felt Otoya’s presence next to him a moment later, his friend pressing a cool bottle of water into his hand.  Rather than drinking it, he held it against his overheated forehead before finally cracking open the lid to take a sip.

Slowly, he started to return to himself, feeling much better with the water and time. When he finally placed his glasses back on his face, he noticed Otoya was still beside him, one arm lying over the back of the bench behind his shoulders as he scrolled on his phone.

“Sorry for making you sit out for a while. You could’ve gone to hang out with the other two.”

“What? And get second hand diabetes from the two lovebirds? No fucking way.” Otoya shivered, creeped out by the thought. “Would much rather take it easy with you.  Eat a churro, go on a slow ride, people watch.  Feeling any better?”

Yuki nodded, holding the half empty water bottle in his hands.  With a sigh, he hefted himself off of the bench, determined to not make a waste of the day.  Otoya followed him up, pocketing his phone before pointing towards a path in the park, heading towards a group of rides that were slower in speed and less stomach turning.

“No more roller coasters for Yuki today,” Otoya nodded as he pointed towards the line for a ferris wheel.  Yuki hesitated, unsure if that was any better than the ride that had made him nauseous.  Otoya was watching him curiously though, and Yuki decided that if he were to admit to a fear of heights right at this moment, the rest of his day would be ruined by unending jests and taunts of his friend bullying him for being afraid to get on a safe ride.

He wished he would have said something when they were halfway to the top, and Otoya called out to him again.

“Yuki, you good?”

His eyes closed tightly, Yuki shook his head no , fingers gripping the seat directly across from the door to the cage they were riding in. He inhaled sharply as the cage rocked, and Yuki imagined they were swinging hundreds of feet in the air.

He heard Otoya laugh as the cage moved again, his friend rocking it back and forth deliberately, but Yuki couldn’t even open his mouth to scold him.

The swinging slowed, and Otoya sighed. Yuki cracked open one eye to look at him, hoping that he wasn’t too disappointed to be stuck with someone like him who really just wasn’t built for theme parks.

“No roller coasters, no ferris wheels… you scared of heights, Yuki?” Otoya questioned, not a single jest in his voice as he asked.  Yuki nodded quickly, hoping that maybe this would get him out of having to go on another tall ride like this for the rest of the day.  He didn’t want to be a spoil sport, but he’d never been able to handle these types of rides, no matter how hard he tried.

All at once, the cage stopped, grinding to a jerky halt as the cage swung back and forth.  Yuki’s eyes shot open as he looked from the now stationary bright blue sky to Otoya who was aggravatingly unbothered by the situation.

“Did we stop?”

“Seems so. Looks like we have the best view of the whole park…” Otoya drawled off, gesturing towards the sky and the landscape and the teenie tiny people below them that Yuki refused to acknowledge. Inhaling deeply, he closed his eyes again, swearing to himself he would open them once they moved…

The cage rocked again, and Yuki did his best not to gasp.  Otoya shushed him as he slid up beside him, throwing an arm around his shoulder and patting his knee.

“It’s all good, Yuki. We’re safe so don’t be such a big baby.”

“Sorry… You really should have got with Karasu and Hiori…”

“Nah….like I said, I’d much rather be with you, okay?”

Yuki nodded, really not believing him at this point. Otoya squeezed his shoulder reassuringly, using the hand that patted his knee to pry his fingers from the seat.

“Hey, look at me,” Otoya coaxed, weaving his fingers between Yuki’s in a way that was surely meant to be comforting, but at this point, only made Yuki feel like he was about to overheat again.  Even so, he cracked open his eyes, meeting Otoya’s consistent green gaze.  Otoya looked so calm, even as Yuki was glued to the seat from nerves. Otoya squeezed his fingers again, pulling Yuki closer to his side slowly with the arm around his shoulders. “I said we’re good, okay? Just look at me until we get to the ground.”

Yuki nodded, adjusting the hand that was held by Otoya so that their palms pressed together, no longer worried about getting teased later as he  stared at the unending calmness on his friend’s face.  Otoya rubbed his shoulder comfortingly, further soothing his rapidly beating heart as the ride started moving again, now taking them over the crest as they began their painfully slow descent.

“Hey Yuki,” Otoya called to him again, breaking the calming trance that he had started.  “Should we kiss?”

Yuki scooted back, shrugging EIta’s arm off of him without letting go of his hand.  While the thought wasn’t an offensive one, he was sure Otoya was just messing with him.

“What? No?”

“Ahah, yeah you’re right. Just you kept staring at me so you know…”

“You told me to, you dumbass?”

“Yeah but you didn’t have to dude.”

Yuki rolled his eyes as the cage came to a stop at the loading platform, dropping Otoya’s hand as he dashed off the ride and into the line to exit.  He waited briefly for Otoya to join him before grabbing his friend by the sleeve and planting a kiss on his cheek.

Otoya jumped at the contact, stoic face finally showing some emotion as his cheeks blushed red and he slapped a hand to his cheek.

“Hey man, what was that for?”

Yuki shrugged, nonchalantly walking away as he headed towards the arcade section of the park, determined to spend the rest of the day winning tacky toys and soundly beating his friend in every game imaginable.

“I’m scared of heights, Otoya. Not of kissing you.”
