   "Jean Valjean, as may be remembered, had served nineteen years of hard labour on the day he was released. This stranger had been arrested and sent to the Bagne of Toulon before the Revolution, that is to say, sometime in the year 1788, the exact day being unknown to both him and the author. That makes thirty-four years. Jean Valjean had been chased away wherever he went – it was no different for this stranger."
   Part One, Chapter One.

   When Servais Ploum arrives in Montreuil-sur-Mer after thirty-four years of imprisonment, he has nothing - not even his memories. Scarred, physically and emotionally, he is chased away by the people, until he is found by the mayor of the town, Monsieur Madeleine, who seems to know more about Servais than Servais himself does.
