Summary
Charles was never afraid of the dark. As a child, he knew that there're things much more terrible than the simple absence of light. Charles was never afraid of the dark. Charles never thought that he would have to be afraid of the dark.
He doesn't remember his accident when he wakes up, and it's a blessing and a curse at the same time. Maybe it would be easier if he could remember what brought him to the hospital bed, or maybe, he thinks in a daze, that this way his mind is safe from the pain that remains on the race track, from knowing the severity of his injuries, from knowing the severity of his mistakes. Charles doesn't want to open his eyes yet, to face the consequences of the accident, isn't yet ready to push himself to wake up, there is a heavy, impotent fatigue in his body that Charles isn't able to fight.
