Work Text:
Link stood there, not believing his eyes. He can’t jump to conclusions. Zelda’s okay and he’ll meet up with her soon! Then he heard a roar. His heart sunk to his stomach. He wanted to cry. He didn’t want to believe it.
All he wanted was for Zelda and him to settle down and be happy. Maybe move in together in Hateno village. Have a family, perhaps? But here he is, hearing the roar of this dragon. He knows the truth and he cannot escape if yet again.
It feels as though he’s gone through this a million times. As though, he was had many lifetimes, and this is normal for him. Yet he can’t shake the creeping sadness that is consuming him. He feels it in his throat and his nose as he feels the tears fall onto his cheeks.
He knew Zelda would do something so rash. Zelda always said that he never gave up, but she never accounted that she wouldn’t either. Not even if it was in risk of her life.
As the dragon inched closer and closer, Link held out his hand. He touched the dragon. He could hear Zelda’s voice, as if she were standing in front of him. As if he was holding her face and she spoke to him.
“You I had to do this, Link.” He want to puke. “It was my only option. I want to to continue to protect the world. But also live your life. Find somewhere to live. Maybe find another to spend your life with. Please do not be sad.”
The tears streamed down his face. How could he not be sad? He lost Mipha. Oh how Mipha made his heart jump and skip. The way her touch lingered when she healed him. But then she was gone before he knew it. And Him and Zelda became closer. He took for granted all the nights they would be oh so close and stare at the stars. The days where it was just the two of them searching for more artifacts of the ancient past. The Zonai.
Now their presence was all too real. They’re existence angered Link. He had never knew anything about them, and now that he does, it’s ripped yet another person from his grasp. He could feel Zelda’s hands on his shoulders.
“How can I be happy, Zelda?” He looked at the beautiful dragon. It was almost as beautiful as Her. “You will learn.” And with those words, she went away. She roared as she flew away, leaving Link standing by himself. So many emotions were tearing him apart. He wanted to sob for days. That’s all he could do. But he has to live up to Zelda’s word. Bring peace to the world, and learn how to be happy again.
