Work Text:

Korra sat impatiently in her seat, looking at the nearby clock. She’d been checking it on and off for the past half hour, half an hour after her date was supposed to have arrived. She hated being impatient, but she couldn’t help it, not when she was waiting for the most perfect woman to ever grace the earth.

Today was hers and Asami’s two-year anniversary, two years since they’d become a couple and taken that impromptu vacation to the Spirit World together, a trip that was forever etched into Korra’s memory, especially that first kiss they’d shared on that hilltop, as the wonders of the other realm surrounded them.

And to celebrate the occasion, the two of them had decided to have a romantic dinner that evening, at a very fancy restaurant. One of the many perks of dating the richest woman in the world, if Korra was honest.

It wasn’t their usual spot, Kwongs, but a newer establishment that had opened up recently, with a beautiful rooftop sitting area that gave way to a view of the nearby central park of Republic City. And Asami had been very insistent on coming here partly to give these new businesses some support.

And well, having the Avatar and CEO of Future Industries show up at your restaurant was definitely something worth bragging about for promotional reasons. But Korra didn’t care about that if she were honest. She and Asami could have a date in a sewer as far as she was concerned and she’d still have a wonderful time.

That being said, Asami did sure know how to pick a spot for their date. The roof gave her a breathtaking view of the city. It was a lovely scene… though Korra lamented she currently didn't have anyone to share it with. Again she found herself looking at the clock, a habit she was telling herself to try and break.

Asami wasn’t usually late like this. The woman had never been late for anything in her life. She did everything

A few minutes of pondering and Korra being a little insecure later, she saw a familiar face making her way up the nearby stairwell… and she looked absolutely divine. It was Asami alright, wearing what looked like a new red dress for the occasion and she looked as glamorous as ever.

“Korra!” Asami gasped in relief when she saw her.

“Babe!” Korra exclaimed, as Asami quickly hurried over to her and gave her a kiss on the lips.

They parted, before Asami sat down. “Sorry for being late. There was some stuff at work I needed to take care of.”

Korra sighed. “It’s fine, don’t worry, I’m just glad you’re okay.” She stroked her cheek. “But if I’m honest, it should be illegal you had to work on our anniversary.”

“Well, I’m afraid it isn’t that simple, my love,” Asami regretfully responded. “But I’m here now.” She reached over and took Korra’s hands.

Korra held Asami’s hands back and then gazed into her girlfriend’s eyes again. They practically glowed in the light of the evening sun… as did the dress she was wearing. Then again, Korra didn’t think there was an outfit that Asami didn’t look ravishingly perfect in, though Asami would probably disagree.

“You look great by the way,” Korra said honestly, blushing softly. “I mean, you always look great.”

Asami giggled. “Flatter.”

“I mean it, you look freaking hot,” Korra said. “Hell, even covered from head to toe in grease in your workshop, I still think you’re the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen. You barely need to do a thing to look as great as you do.” The avatar looked to one side. “It’s a lot more than I have to do honestly.”

“Nonsense,” Asami insisted, wanting to push any ounce of Korra’s doubts to one side. “You look beautiful too. We’re each beautiful in our own ways. I may have a face worthy of a glamorous mover star… but you? Well, your hair is always cute and don’t get me started on those arms of yours.”

Korra blushed redder. “‘Sami!”

“Don’t you deny it, Avatar Korra,” the fire nation woman teased.

At that moment the waiter arrived and asked the two of them if they were ready to order. Korra said yes instantly, if only to ensure Asami wouldn’t try and make her flustered again. And so they had their dinner and it was delicious. Asami always knew the best places to dine.

When their food was eaten and the night rolled on, Korra and Asami found themselves standing by the balcony on the roof of the restaurant, looking at the city below. Korra rested her head on Asami’s shoulder, smiling softly, content in just sharing this moment with the woman she loved.

“The city looks beautiful tonight,” Korra whispered. “But not as beautiful as my girlfriend.”

Asami blushed softly. “Oh, Korra… now I’m the one who's blushing.”

Korra giggled and then Asami’s eyes widened, as she suddenly remembered something, something very important. She looked around, seeing that they were alone on the roof thankfully. As much as she would have loved wanting to do this with an audience, it was probably better for what she was planning to be a more… intimate affair.

“Hey uh, Korra, I just remembered I got you an anniversary present.”

“You did?” Korra wondered. “I mean, I’m flattered, Asami, but you know you didn’t need to. I mean, I didn’t get you anything.”

“No, but I wanted to do this. So uh… could you just wait a sec while I grab it from my purse?”

“Sure!” Korra said.

Asami walked towards the table where her purse was, looking over her shoulder and seeing Korra gazing at her. She giggled. “Don’t peak, you dork! I want this to be a surprise!”

“Fine!” Korra groaned, turning away. “But this better be good.”

“Oh it will be,” Asami said with a grin, reaching down into her purse. When she found what she was looking for, the smile on her face grew even wider. She’d had this all planned out for weeks on end. Sure, she hadn’t exactly prepared what she was going to say but she knew that wouldn’t matter, not when she knew exactly how Korra was going to react.

Walking over to Korra, Asami then prepared herself… and knew it was now or never.

“Okay, babe, you can look now,” she said confidently.

Korra turned around… and the young water tribe woman’s jaw dropped when she saw what her surprise was. Asami was bent down on one knee, the biggest smile on her face and in her hands, was a little red box with a beautiful silver betrothal necklace inside, the metal of the pendant shimmering in the light.

“Oh, my spirits!” Korra gasped, covering her mouth.

“Korra, my dearest love from the land of ice, will you-”

Asami didn’t even have a chance to finish her sentence, before Korra grabbed her cheeks hard and kissed her like she’d never kissed her before. Asami just giggled into the kiss and clung on tightly, having known this was exactly how Korra would react to her proposal. She kept on kissing back, matching Korra’s fierceness.

When the two lovers finally broke for air, Korra gazed into Asami’s beautiful green eyes. “Yes,” she whispered. “Yes, Asami, I’ll marry you.”

The fire nation woman smiled fondly and melted, before she took the necklace and slid it around Korra’s neck. She felt her new wife-to-be embrace her, their foreheads touching. Korra was so indescribably happy, the happiest she’d ever been since she and Asami had first gotten together.

“I… I can’t believe you really proposed,” Korra whispered.

“I can’t imagine my life without you, Korra,” the glamorous woman responded. “I love you with all my heart.”

Korra felt the necklace, and with her metalbending, could tell how pure the metal the pendant was made out of was. “Did… did you make this yourself?”

“Cost me an arm and a leg to get the metal in the first place, but you know I could afford that,” her fiancee bragged. “It was hiding in my workshop for weeks. Part of the reason I was late was because I had to head home to get it. I had to hide in a secret spot, somewhere a certain future wife of mine wouldn’t find it!”

“I’d have kept it a secret!”

Asami raised her eyebrow.

“Okay, maybe not, but still… at least now, everything makes sense.” Gently, Korra squeezed Asami just a little tighter. “Spirits… we’re gonna be married.”

“Mhm… I’ve uh… actually been lowkey making a few wedding plans already.”

Korra smirked. “You were damn sure I was gonna say yes, weren’t you?”

“Well, is there any reason you wouldn’t have wanted to be my wife?” Asami asked teasingly.

“Fair point,” Korra whispered, before she and Asami kissed deeply. They could go over the wedding plans later, right now, Korra was eager to show Asami how in love she was right now… and that Asami’s proposal had made it the best anniversary the two of them would ever have.
