Tiny Jack Horner

Work Text:

The Wishing Star was enermous. It really hadn’t occurred to Ethical Bug how big and shiny the fallen star would be. He saw commotion in the middle of the star but he thougt better to keep out of it. Besides, he was a bit tired after a long day of being Big Jack Horner’s conscience. The man had flicked him away like he was some annoying mosquito.

Still Ethical Bug had been curious to see what all the fuss was about the famous Wishing Star. It really was impressive, he had to admit. Who would get the wish in the end?

Ethical Bug’s musings were cut short when he heard a loud burp coming from behind him. He turned around and noticed Jack’s big nanny bag on the ground. Suddenly something came from the bag. Something very chatty.

”Hmm, did it work? I can’t see anyone! Am I still on the Wishing Star? Yikes, a giant bug!”

Ethical Bug yelped as that chatty person almost bumped into him.

”It… it can’t be…” the bug said in shock.

”Hey, don’t I know you?” the voice said. ”Did you eat my magical snack too?”

”What? No!” Bug said in confusion.

He couldn’t believe that he was facing Big Jack Horner. Only, he wasn’t big anymore.

”Uh, Jack, it’s me, Ethical Bug”, the insect said hesitantly.

”How come you are large as well?” Jack asked, looking like he was about to pout. ”Only I get to be gigantic!”

”You… you are not actually a giant, Jack”, Ethical Bug said tentatively. ”Um, look behind you at that bag so you might get the idea.”

Jack turned around, only to see the nanny bag. Only now it was as large as a boat.

”Huh? Why is my bag so huge suddenly? Wait a minute…”

Jack’s face paled and his eyes widened in horror.

”I took the wrong snack!” he cried.

”Uhhuh”, Ethical Bug said and rolled his eyes.

”Those things should really be labeled more clearly”, Jack mumbled.

Then he looked towards the center of the star and saw how Goldi, the bears and Team Friendship were fighting over the map. His face fell.

”No! This can’t be happening! Now I never get that wish!” he shouted.

”Well, your wish wasn’t very good one anyway”, Ethical Bug retorted.

Jack slumped down on the ground and looked defeated. All his careful planning, all his hope, all crushed because of a stupid mistake. He couldn’t believe he had failed.

He knew he never could run in time to get the map for himself and make the wish as he was so small and the star was big.

Suddenly red fire flashed in one corner of the star. It lasted for several minutes until it subdued. Jack and Ethical Bug couldn’t see it but now the gang was tearing the map in pieces to destroy the Wishing Star.

The star started to shake violently and both Jack and Ethical Bug yelled in alarm. The star started to crumble around them.

”What are they doing?” Jack said. ”Did they wish something? Is the wish gone now?”

Ethical Bug knew it was time to flee but Jack didn’t seem to care about everything collapsing around him. The insect cursed his righteous moral compass and grabbed tiny Jack in his arms and started to fly away from the Star that was being destroyed.

Ethical Bug was surprisingly strong, not as strong as an ant but he still could carry double his weight easily. Jack wasn’t as heavy as he feared despite they were about the same size now. It felt bizarre to carry him like this. Jack’s expression was gloomy and he didn’t even seem to care that he was being carried away.

Jack felt absolutely devastated. Years of searching for The Wishing Star had gone to waste in one second. Why had he been so careless with the magical snacks?

Ethical Bug had reached the Dark Forest’s edge and was too weary to carry Jack anymore so he landed on the ground near some bushes. He put Jack gently down. The other was unusually quiet.

”Jack?” the bug asked. ”I thought we could rest here for a while. I’m too tired to fly.”

”I can’t believe it’s gone”, Jack said, ignoring the other completely. ”This is the worst day of my life.”

”Come on, don’t be so melodramatic!” Ethical Bug laughed.

But Jack’s expression was so sad that the insect stopped his chuckling quickly.

”Hey, was the wish really that big deal to you?” he asked the man.

Jack looked at him side-eyed and lowered his gaze again on the ground. He sniffed.

”Of course it was”, Jack said with a thick voice. ”Without the wish, all my hope is gone.”

”That’s not true, you still have so many things”, Ethical Bug objected. ”Like your factory!”

”Hah, what is so special about some pie factory?” Jack said dismissively.

Ethical Bug had almost forgot who he was talking to. He sat down next to Jack, who was sitting very slumped.

”Many would be so happy to have what you have, Jack”, the bug said with his teacher-like tone.

”Ugh, save me from your moral lectures!” Jack snapped.

”They are not lectures! Uh, I mean, I am just saying that you should appreciate what you already have, that’s all.”

”A bug like you would never understand! I’m never going to be magical!” Jack said desperately.

Ethical Bug noticed now that Jack had tears in his eyes and was shocked. He would never had thought that the heartless and diabolical crime lord would be able to cry.

”Why are you so obsessed with magic anyway?” the bug asked, feeling a bit uncomfortable about his new discovery.

Jack stared into the remnants of the crushed star and looked wistful.

”Well, when you live in a world full of magic, it kinda sucks not to be magical yourself.”

”Oh”, Ethical Bug said in surprise and blinked.

”It’s just… I have always been surrounded by magical fairy tale creatures that upstage me in every turn.”

”But you are still very successful businessman!” the bug said, unable to sympathise with the other.

”It’s not like I created my pie empire from scratch”, Jack said. and drew circles on the dirt with his finger. ”My parents are the ones who founded the whole company.”

”Well, isn’t it nice to have a stable business? And you have so many magical objects too!” Ethical Bug said, trying to cheer up the other.

”Well, most of them are in my magical bag and my bag is… Oh no!” Jack said and his face paled in horror.

”My bag! It’s gone!” he cried.

Ethical Bug watched as Jack stood up and hurried towards the crater. Jack stopped when he had reached the cliff’s end.

”No no no!” Jack bellowed. ”And just when I thought this day couldn’t get any worse!”

Ethical Bug followed the agitated man and was unsure how to respond. That old nanny bag seemed to be quite dear to Jack.

Jack slumped on his knees and covered his face with his tiny hands.

”Hey, it’s okay, you can always collect more artifacts!” Ethical Bug said with a fake cheery voice.

Jack didn’t reply. His whole body was shaking. Ethical Bug couldn’t believe it. Was the other having a breakdown?

Indeed, Jack was now crying, still covering his face with his hands that once were huge. Suddenly, Ethical Bug felt a wave of pity towards the tiny man and approached him carefully.

Jack hadn’t been aware of his surroundings and startled a bit when he felt a hand on his back. He kept crying however as it seemed that once the gates were open, they were impossible to close.

”You must feel quite disappointed”, Ethical Bug said and stroked his back slowly.

Jack only sniffed and kept his face hidden.

”Years of searching…” he mumbled and kept crying.

”Hey, you could maybe enroll into Merlin’s magical school if magic is what you wish to learn”, Ethical Bug suggested.

But it didn’t seem to help. Jack was completely down and it unnerved Ethical Bug for some reason. Jack’s sobs were now quiet.

After some time had passed, Jack’s crying had ended. He put his hands on his knees and looked at the starry sky with a forlorn expression.

”I have never felt this small and insignificant”, he said.

”Hey now, it’s not all bad to be small!” Ethical Bug said cheerfully. ”You can sneak past anyone when you are this small for example.”

But it didn’t seem to reassure Jack. Jack turned to look at Ethical Bug, perhaps expecting more words of comfort.

The insect almost gasped when he saw the raw expression of Jack. They say that after crying you feel the most real and true. Ethical Bug couldn’t believe that the same obnoxious and bad man was now in front of him as he looked so innocent and almost… beautiful.

Ethical Bug was relieved bugs couldn’t blush. Jack’s baby blue eyes were still quite shiny after crying and his cheeks were red. As if in some kind of trance, the cricket took a napkin from his pocket and started to dry Jack’s teary cheeks.

”It’s going to be all right, Jack”, he said softly.

Jack was oddly quiet. It wasn’t like him to be so silent. Something occurred to Ethical Bug and he asked:
”How long the effect of the magical snack lasts? You probably won’t be Tiny Jack Horner forever?”

”Don’t call me that!” Jack snapped and blushed. ”And no, the effect only last a day or two.”

”Oh, well, isn’t that a relief for you?” the bug asked encouragingly.

”With my luck, I probably get eaten by some vulture before that”, Jack said grimly.

”Hey now, don’t worry, I will take care of you”, Ethical Bug reassured and patted Jack’s shoulder.

It still felt pretty surreal to be same size as Jack. Ethical Bug was used to be the smallest one and not noticed by others, especially by the people he tried to be a good conscience.

”Why?”

”Huh?” Ethical Bug said confused.

”Why do you want to help me?” Jack asked. ”You said I’m a irredeemable monster. So why help me?”

”Oh…that. I think I lost my cool back there”, Ethical Bug said uncomfortably. ”I believe in second chances. And I don’t want you to get hurt by some predator while you are small.”

Jack thought the bug was rather sappy but didn’t say anything. He had discarded the bug earlier rather rudely so it didn’t make any sense that the other wanted to help him. But perhaps he did it out of duty, he was an incarnation of a good conscience after all.

Ethical Bug yawned.

”It’s getting pretty late, we should find shelter for the night”, he said.

Jack nodded and watched as the insect seemed to scan the area.

”I know, let’s go sleep in that little tree hole there!” the bug said excitedly when he had spotted a tree with potential.

”In a hole?” Jack asked in disgust. ”I rather sleep here on the ground.”

”But you will be captured by some beast for sure if you stay here!” Ethical Bug said exasperated.

As if to point out what he had just said an owl hooted and swooped, almost catching them in its clasp.

”Yikes! As I was saying, let’s go before we are dead meat!” Ethical Bug yelled and grabbed Jack’s hand.

They ran towards the tree and Ethical Bug flied them on a tree branch into the safety. He fell on top of Jack by accident.

”Uh, sorry, didn’t mean to land on you”, the bug said awkwardly.

Jack blinked and blushed and felt rather trapped under Ethical Bug’s weight. Ethical Bug had pinned him down with his body and hands. Jack felt rather heated all of a sudden.

Ethical Bug was still out of breath after the exertion and was staring those blue eyes of the once so big man. He felt suddenly very mesmerised by them.

”Oh, sorry, I forgot to move”, he mumbled quickly as he realised the position they were in and hastily moved away.

Jack dusted off his clothes and avoided looking at the odd bug.

”Thanks”, he said shortly. ”For saving me back there.”

Surprised by the words, Ethical Bug was speechless, something that rarely happened to him.

”So, how is that hole? I bet there is some rabid squirrel there”, Jack said, changing the subject.

Ethical Bug peeked into the hole that was on the tree and smiled.

”Looks like it’s free!” he said. ”Come!”

Hesitantly Jack followed the bug and they stepped inside the little abandoned bird nest.

”Great, I’m going to spend my night here like some animal”, Jack sighed.

Jack sat down in the corner of the nest, looking quite down. Ethical Bug took some old hay that was in nest and tried to fluff it to make the place more comfortable. It was rather dark in the nest but his eyes had adjusted to it. He could see Jack’s sad face and somehow it made him ache to see the man so depressed.

”We should be here until it’s morning”, the bug said, trying to break the thick silence.

Jack didn’t reply. His back was leaning on the tree and he was fiddling with his fingers.

”Don’t be so gloomy, Jack”, Ethical Bug said and sat next to him. ”Take this as a chance to see the world from a new perspective!”

”Geez, are you always that cheery?” Jack grimaced.

Only now Jack took a look of his company. Ethical Bug’s buggy blue eyes were huge and almost looked like they were illuminated. He had a sweet smile on his face and he was still wearing his newsboy like attire.

”Why, yes!” the bug said happily. ”I don’t see a point in sulking.”

”Why are you not pestering someone else?” Jack huffed weakly.

”Well, mister, you are the one who captured me in the first place!” Ethical Bug said, now a bit annoyed.

”Oh yeah… can’t keep a track on all of the magical things I have collected”, Jack said nonchalantly.

”Hmph…”

”How does it feel?” Jack suddenly asked.

”What?” Ethical Bug asked and turned to look at Jack.

”To be from a fairy tale”, Jack mumbled after a pause.

”Oh. I don’t know. It’s been a while I saw Pinocchio”, he said.

”He is still in showbiz it seems”, Jack said bitterly.

”How do you know?” Ethical Bug asked curiously.

”That’s none of your business!” Jack snapped.

”Gee, no need to be all snappy. I bet you don’t have many friends with that attitude”, Ethical Bug remarked and rolled his eyes.

Jack’s scowl turned to something unreadable. Ethical Bug could see a vulnerable glint in those blue eyes.

”You… you do have friends, don’t you, Jack?” the bug asked.

Jack turned to look away.

”Of course I do!” he said but there was a slight waver in his voice. ”And don’t use the f word!”

Sensing that this was a sensitive subject to Jack, Ethical Bug’s curiosity had now peaked.

”Who?” he asked.

”Uh… just some guys… from work, you know”, Jack said vaguely.

”Hmm.”

”Besides, who needs friends when you got good lackeys?” Jack said.

”But all of them died!” Ethical Bug cried. ”And it’s because of you!”

”Hmph, they knew what they signed up for”, Jack murmured. ”There can be certain small risks being in Baker’s Dozen.”

”Small risks?” Ethical Bug spat. ”You really are incurable!”

Jack’s expression turned into a contemplating one.

”What are f-friends for anyway? They just let you down”, he said cryptically.

”What do you mean?” Ethical Bug asked.

”Why are you so nosy?” Jack sighed.

”It’s my job to find people’s traits and weaknesses and evaluate them!” Ethical Bug said proudly.

”And you are not a weapon for evil because…?”

”Haha, very funny! I make sure people are their best selves!” the bug said energetically.

”Wow, you have read too many self-help books, dude”, Jack retorted. ”I don’t think it’s that simple though.”

”Why wouldn’t it be? It’s easy to do morally right decisions!”

”Changing isn’t easy”, Jack said shortly.

”But I like to believe there is hope for everyone to be a better person!” the bug said, not noticing how tense Jack had became.

”People don’t change, they just get worse”, Jack said flatly.

”Well, maybe that applies to you, but not everyone is like that”, Ethical Bug said coldly. ”I have seen all kind of people during my life and been a conscience to all kind of minds. But I have to say that yours is the worst.”

Jack looked at the bug, a hurt expression on his face. He stood up abruptly and walked away from the nest.

”Jack, wait! I didn’t mean it like that!” Ethical Bug cried and ran after him.

Jack was standing dangerously close to the tree branch. His back was turned towards the nest so Ethical Bug couldn’t see his face.

”Hey Jack, don’t go so near the edge”, the bug pleaded and approached the tiny man carefully. ”I’m sorry if I was too harsh.”

Jack looked at the ground that was far away. One step and he would fall to his demise.

”You are right. I know I’m not one of the good guys”, Jack said with a monotonous voice.

”Huh?”

”I don’t have the looks of Prince Charming or magic of Merlin, nor legendary boots of Puss in Boots. I’m not from a fairy tale. Nor am I legend. I’m just some lame nursery rhyme character.”

Ethical Bug was rendered speechless.

”And no one cares about nursery rhyme characters”, Jack said. ”Fairy tale characters are too cool and popular for us.”

”Well, I’m a fairy tale character and still think I’m not too cool for you!” Ethical Bug said, wishing Jack wouldn’t be so near the edge of the branch.

Jack turned to look at the bug, an unreadable expression on his face. Ethical Bug felt frozen, chills going through his spine.

”Please, Jack, listen to me for once! I don’t want you to fall off and hurt yourself, please come back from there!” Ethical Bug begged.

Jack still looked quite sad but a tiny glint of hope was now in his eyes.

”As your conscience, I advise you not to do it”, the bug said.

”Huh?” Jack said and locked his eyes with Ethical Bug. ”How did you know I was going to jump?”

”Because, I am your conscience as I just said!” the bug said. ”Please Jack, you have so much to live for! I don’t care if you are not some legend or a hero, we need some morally dubious people in this world too.”

That had to be his weirdest pep talk he had ever given. Usually he was so strict when it came to morals but maybe he had seen things only in black and white until now.

He just knew Jack wasn’t all bad. It was partly just for the show that he seemed all evil. He had to hide his true self under all that. Maybe all he needed was someone to believe in him.

Jack’s eyes widened and he realised how close to the edge he was and backed away quickly.

”Woah, I can’t believe I almost tried to kill myself!” he cried. ”I think I need to lie down.”

Ethical Bug was suddenly there, wrapping his arms tightly around him into a hug. Jack was confused. Why was the green pest suddenly so affectionate? Didn’t he just yell at him?

”I have always wanted to do that to someone”, the bug mumbled as he ended the long embrace. ”One of the minus sides of the job is that I am usually too tiny to hug anyone.”

Jack’s cheeks were slightly blushed and he felt a bit awkward. But also dizzy as he realised how far away they were from the ground. He wobbled back to the nest and lied down. His chest was heaving and his heart was beating rapidly.

”Jack? You okay?” came a worried voice over him.

Ethical Bug was standing in front of him and stared him with a concerned face.

”Maybe we should call it a night, it has been a long day”, he said hesitantly.

Jack was quiet again and Ethical Bug didn’t like it. He had sort of grown used to that Jack was very chatty.

The bug hesitated a bit before he sat next to Jack who had now closed his eyes. Ethical Bug lied down as well, hoping he would be able to fall asleep after a day full of strange events.

The silence filled the nest. The stars were shining outside unusually brightly. There had been beautiful shooting star showers after the Wishing Star had been destroyed but now they had ended.

”Hey, Bug?” a voice asked suddenly, breaking the silence.

”Hmm?”

”You never told me… what would have you wished?” Jack asked, his voice failing to be casual.

”Huh?”

”Are you always this slow?” Jack snapped impatiently. ”What would have you wished from the star?”

”Oh, that”, Ethical Bug said after he finally realised what the other was referring to.

Jack had opened his eyes and was leaning on his elbows. It was hard to see the bug’s features in the darkness.

”I would have wished that everyone was good”, the bug finally said.

”What?” Jack said, his jaw dropping. ”Is that really your wish? How lame!”

”Hmph, not lamer than yours!” the bug snorted. ”But… now I’m not so sure about it anymore…”

He turned to look at Jack who was watching him curiously.

”Now I would have wished that everyone, and I mean everyone, would have a friend. Even those who are bad to the core”, the bug said.

Jack was surprised. He didn’t know what to reply to that. A friend. For everyone. Suddenly Jack felt one of his many suppressed feelings. It was loneliness.

He would never admit it to it to anyone but he in fact, was rather lonely despite the chatty facade. True, he had his workers to talk to but that wasn’t the same. But who would want to be his friend anyway?

Jack noticed the bug had fallen asleep while he had been pondering. He felt too restless to sleep and the failure of the day haunted his mind. He tried to supres his tears but he was too tired to stop them. Jack wasn’t used to losing or not getting what he wanted. Now he would never be master of all magic. Not even magical at the slightest.

Ever since Pinocchio had stolen his spotlight, he had detested all fairy tale creatures with passion. It wasn’t fair nursery rhyme characters were treated like second rate citizens compared to them. Jack’s obsession for magic had gotten out of hand over the years and he had collected a huge collection of magical objects.

He felt particularly bad for losing his precious nanny bag. It had been so handy and light. He still had enchanted objects at home luckily, not all was lost.

Then he realised he had lost his whole Baker’s Dozen. He wondered should have he felt more something about that. Like remorse? But Jack Horner didn’t feel remorse, now did he?

Suddenly he felt how Ethical Bug leaned on him and used his arm as a pillow. Jack was so surprised that he didn’t even shake the insect away. Feeling too exhausted to move, he let the bug nuzzle with him. He tried to convince himself it was just practical, he wouldn’t get cold because of the warmth of the bug.

Ethical Bug woke up for the morning light. He felt oddly comfortable in the hay bed. Then he realised he was touching something soft and warm.

He had been sleeping side by side with Jack! Jack was still soundly asleep. He was snoring quite heavily. He turned around and put his hand on Ethical Bug’s torso, which made the bug very flustered.

Jack looked quite endearing when he was asleep, all curled up. There wasn’t a hint of malice in his relaxed and peaceful face. It was hard to think that this man was deathly and dangerous, capable of very bad things.

But perhaps he was also capable of good deeds as well? Maybe all he needed was a chance. He had potential, after all, he employed quite a many people in his factory. That had to be a good thing.

Maybe he had gone too far to call him a horrible, irredeemable monster. He was still human, he had to be. Ethical Bug had witnessed him crying and feeling down, that meant the other was capable of all kind of emotions. So why not love and friendship too?

Suddenly Jack stirred awake and noticed two huge bug eyes staring at him. He let out a startled yelp and pushed himself away.

”Please don’t do that!” Jack cried.”You almost gave me a heart attack!”

”But I wasn’t doing anything”, Ethical Bug objected.

”Hmph, you were probably scheming something against me”, Jack mumbled in annoyance.

”What? You are paranoid!” the bug said.

Then, he realised that today was a new day.

”Ahem, couldn’t we start this day with a fresh start? It could be like a new chapter in our lives!” Ethical Bug said excitedly.

”What are you rambling about?” Jack said.

Jack shivered. Was it because of his new small size he felt so cold? He never had that problem when he was his usual big size. He hated to admit but he kind of missed the bug’s body heat next to him.

”I just think since one of your goals in life is gone now, maybe you could think of a new one!” the bug continued.

”Don’t remind me of my failure”, Jack muttered. ”And what new goal? Everything is useless!”

”Come on Jack, don’t be so negative! You could focus on being a better person for example!”

Jack burst into loud laughter.

”Good one, flea!” he chuckled and wiped some tears of joy from his eyes.

”I’m not some flea, you stupid man!” Ethical Bug said heatedly, almost losing his patience. ”And it was just a suggestion.”

”Why do you care so much about me being a better person or whatever anyway?” Jack asked as he stood up. ”It’s not like you can change me.”

”Well, it would be better for everyone if you were even a slightly better person”, Ethical Bug said. ”Most importantly to yourself. And no, it’s not me who can change you. It’s up to you.”

”Hmph, another moral lecture, it’s too early for those!” Jack huffed and walked into the light from the nest.

Sun was shining to the Dark Forest and there were no nocturnal predators around anymore. Jack could see an empty crater of the Wishing Star. Suddenly his mood turned sour.

Ethical Bug followed him to the tree branch.

”I think we should head towards your factory”, he said. ”I don’t know how long it takes for you to change back to your old size but I don’t think it’s a good idea to stay here.”

”Yeah, what if I change my size while I’m in that little nest? Not good”, Jack said and let Ethical Bug fly him on the ground.

This time Ethical Bug landed gracefully and let go of Jack when they had hit the ground. Jack looked around him and sighed.

”Everything is so big”, he whined. ”It takes forever to get out of this forest.”

”Welcome to my world”, Ethical Bug said sarcastically.

”Well, at least you can fly!” Jack said and pouted.

”Well, I rather walk with you”, the insect said and smiled sweetly. ”Besides, what is a little road trip between buddies?”

”Buddies?” Jack repeated in puzzlement.

”Uh, I meant, time flies when you are in a good company”, the bug corrected himself.

”You find me good company?” Jack asked in surprise.

”Uh… well, better you than being alone”, Ethical Bug said and chuckled. ”I think.”

”I think we should head for that direction”, Jack said and pointed at towards the thick forest.

”Wow, you have good navigation skills, Jack!” the bug said in awe. ”I honestly wouldn’t know where to go right now.”

”Well, it’s just one of the many skills I possess”, Jack bragged, feeling pleased for getting a praise.

”Modesty is not one of them I gather?” Ethical Bug deadpanned.

”You know me so well”, Jack laughed heartily and started to walk towards the forest.

”But the thing is, I don’t think I do”, Ethical Bug said and started to follow the man.

Jack glanced at the bug who was now walking next to him.

”Jack, I really want to get to know you better, now that we work together”, Ethical Bug said bravely.

”Work together?” Jack asked in confusion. ”I never hired you.”

”You don’t need to hire a conscience”, Ethical Bug said and smiled. ”I’ll be with you all the time from now on!”

”Whaa?” Jack said in confusion. ”No way! Even when I take a shower?”

”Uh, well not then”, Ethical Bug admitted.

”How about when I go to toilet?” Jack asked.

”Jack!”

”Sorry, I was just messing with you”, Jack said and laughed.

”Hmph.”

Ethical Bug looked at Jack who seemed to be in better mood than on the previous night. Maybe some action in the woods would do him good? Ethical Bug decided to distract Jack so the other wouldn’t start reminiscing about the failed wish adventure again.

”So, I guess that is one thing you like to do”, he said.

”Hmm?”

”To mess with other people, I mean”, the bug said.

”Haha, yeah, it’s pretty fun!” Jack said and smirked. ”Like when I took that phoenix and you were all impressed and then I used it as a flamethrower!”

”You really shouldn’t have done that”, Ethical Bug scolded at him.

They were now deep inside the forest. It felt like it took ages to walk even a short distance. Jack cursed his small size. If only he had eaten the magical cookie instead.

”Jack, tell me about your nursery rhyme”, Ethical Bug said, as if sensing the other needed to think something else. ”I don’t think I have ever heard it myself. How does it go?”

Jack stopped on his tracks and turned his head towards Ethical Bug. His cheeks and ears reddened.

”Are you just messing with me right now?” he asked in annoyance.

”No! I honestly want to know how it goes!” the bug said and smiled encouragingly.

”Promise not to laugh”, Jack demanded.

”Of course, I promise”, the insect said.

Jack took a deep breath and paused for a while.

” Little Jack Horner
Sat in the corner,
Eating a Horner pie;
He put in his thumb,
And pulled out a plum,
And said, "What a good boy am I!" Jack recited the poem unenthusiastically.

”Heh, that is kind of ironic”, Ethical Bug said.

”What is it?” Jack said defensively, his face still red from embarrassment.

”It says what a good boy you are, when you are in fact anything but that in reality”, the bug said.

Jack’ blue eyes suddenly looked quite hurt.

”But… but… I am a good boy”, he suddenly whispered.

”What? No, you are not, you are quite bad, Jack”, the insect said truthfully. ”But with my help, you can become a good err, boy!”

Jack fell silent and looked at the ground. He started to walk again, this time faster. Ethical Bug had to run in order to catch up with him.

”Hey, wait for me!” the bug said. ”What is it now?”

Jack didn’t reply. He looked like he was sulking.

”I knew you would laugh at my poem”, he said gruffly.

”What? I didn’t laugh at it!” Ethical Bug said exasperated.

”Well you might as well as had”, Jack huffed and didn’t look at him.

”You don’t make any sense, Jack!” Ethical Bug sighed. ”I didn’t mock your poem, I swear!”

”Usually people do… and they don’t live tell the tale”, Jack said darkly.

”See? That is the reason you definitely aren’t a good boy!” Ethical Bug snapped and hurried to face Jack.

”Hmph… yeah, I am a bad guy, we established that already”, Jack said.

”Jack, why are you being so impossible? I just want to help you!” Ethical Bug said.

”Go away”, Jack said and started walking again.

”No!” Ethical Bug said firmly.

”Why are you so adamant to follow me everywhere?” Jack snapped.

”Because… no one needs a good conscience more than you do, Jack!” Ethical Bug stated boldly.

Jack turned to look at the bug. Ethical Bug’s eyes were firmly staring into him, as if they saw into his very soul.

”I-I don’t need anyone to tell me what to do”, Jack said, but he sounded a bit unsure under that piercing gaze.

”I simply want to advise you, Jack”, Ethical Bug said now more softly. ”I want you to be happy.”

”Happy?” Jack repeated. ”Don’t you know I’m dead inside?”

”You’re just saying that, Jack”, Ethical Bug said and touched Jack’s right hand. ”I know you can find happiness if you just try.”

”Not true”, Jack said grimly. ”Bad guys don’t get happy endings.”

He was walking more quickly now, and it seemed like he didn’t want to continue their conversation anymore.

Ethical Bug however didn’t feel like this was the end of it and wanted to continue:

”Maybe I have been too harsh towards you.”

Jack only glanced him slightly and continued his brisk walking.

”I am your conscience whether you like it or not. I just know there is good inside you”, Ethical Bug said surely.

”Please, you make me vomit”, Jack retorted. ”Try to be a bit more original.”

”I know you can be better than this, Jack, I just know it!”

Suddenly Jack turned sharply to look at the bug and snapped: ”Why are you so obsessed with changing people? Your wish was to make everyone good despite not even asking them! I don’t think that is very nice. It’s actually very obnoxious!”

Ethical Bug was a bit startled by the outburst. He backed away as Jack looked very angry.

”Jack, I don’t wish that anymore! It’s my job to make people better!”

”Well, you didn’t do very good job with Pinocchio! The guy is a pathological liar!” Jack said angrily.

The remark felt like a sting. Ethical Bug gasped.

”I… I know I should have been better with him, but that boy never listened to me! No one listens to me.”

”Because you’re so damn annoying”, Jack said and rolled his eyes.

He was getting weary arguing with the tiny insect. He was getting tired of being this small and unnoticeable.

Suddenly he heard sniffing. Jack looked at the bug, who had started to cry.

”I-I’m only doing my job”, the bug cried.”No one ever appreciates what I do!”

Jack suddenly felt a pang of guilt as he watched how the other was crying like a waterfall.

”Hey now, I didn’t mean it like that”, Jack tried to comfort the bug awkwardly.

Somehow it made Jack feel restless to see the otherwise so cheerful bug so down, especially knowing he had been the one to cause it.

Ethical Bug continued weeping. Jack came hesitantly closer to him and patted him on his back.

”I’m sorry”, he said.

Ethical Bug blinked and looked at Jack, who had a look of regret on his face.

”You… you are?” the bug asked in awe. ”I don’t think you have ever been sorry in your life before!”

”Sure I have”, Jack said uncomfortably. ”Like when I took that wrong snack… or when I shot my own men… that gave me kinda meh feeling to be honest.”

Ethical Bug wiped his tears away and smiled.

”Well, it goes to show you, I was right about you!” he exclaimed now more brightly.

Jack looked confused. He wasn’t sure what the insect was referring to.

”You are not all bad, Jack!”

”Oh… I guess not”, Jack admitted reluctantly. ”So, are we cool now?”

”Sure”, Ethical Bug said and had a warm smile on his face. ”I promise to sound less like a self-help book from now on. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea.”

”Hmm”, Jack hummed and started to walk again.

Hours passed and they were still in the huge forest. Jack still wasn’t reverted back to his old size. Ethical Bug found it puzzling. Those snacks had to be very effective!

”I wish I had a plum pie right now”, Jack said wistfully as his stomach grumbled loudly.

”I’m afraid you have to settle for some berries”, Ethical Bug said and started to pick some wild strawberries.

They sat down to eat. Both of their feet were quite tired after walking for so long. Jack enjoyed the berries, for his relief he seemed to get filled by just a handful of them. Perhaps there were some perks of being small after all.

Suddenly dark clouds came and it started to rain. Ethical Bug started scouting the area and flied around to see if there was any shelter for them. He spotted a cave nearby and flied back to where Jack was.

Jack was rather pitiful sight, a tiny man, a size of a cricket, standing alone in the rain. He was shivering. Ethical Bug landed next to him and said:

”I found some shelter, let me take you there!”

Jack looked oddly relieved by seeing him.

”I- I thought you just left me here”, he said with a shivering voice.

”What? I’m not that mean”, Ethical Bug said. ”Now, come on, let’s go!”

Ethical Bug flied them to the cave. The cave was rather large and could fit normal sized Jack there.

Jack was soaking wet so he started to strip off from his clothes and put them to dry on the rocks. Now he was only wearing his pants and boots. He took the shoes off as well but didn’t take off his trousers.

Ethical Bug couldn’t help but glance at Jack’e naked torso. The man looked so soft but he had also wide shoulders and surprisingly muscular arms.

”Like what you see?” Jack asked teasingly.

Ethical Bug quickly turned away and sat down on one of the rocks.

”I was thinking, we should stay here for the night”, the bug said after collecting himself back together. ”I don’t think we should travel further when we are so tired after walking all day. Besides, it’s raining.”

”Hmm, I suppose so”, Jack agreed. ”I’m surprised the effect of the magical drink hasn’t worn off yet. I’m getting a little worried.”

”I’m sure it’s only a matter of time when you are back to your old size”, Ethical Bug said reassuringly.

”But how long does it take?” Jack asked exasperated. ”I don’t want to be some squirrel’s dinner.”

”Like I said, I’ll protect you!” Ethical Bug said and patted a rock next to him, beckoning the other to join him.

”My conscience to the rescue”, Jack mumbled and sat down next to him. ”You don’t happen to know how to make fire, do you?”

Ethical Bug shook his head apologetically. He noticed how Jack was rubbing his arms as he was cold. Jack leaned to Ethical Bug and yelped in surprise.

”How are you so warm?” he wondered. ”I thought bugs weren’t warm like humans!”

”Well, I’m a special bug”, Ethical Bug said proudly.

Jack was now leaning heavily on him and he started to rub his hands on Ethical Bug’s torso. The touch made the insect feel rather flustered, though he couldn’t admit that to himself. It was just Jack, seeking for warmth, nothing else. No need to get so worked up from such a thing.

Jack eventually stopped his shivering and stopped leaning on the bug. He wished there was a fire or that he still had the phoenix who could easily make some warming flames. He never had made fire without matches himself. He hated to feel so helpless and small.

He glanced at Ethical Bug’s direction and asked curiously:
”So, what is your real name?”

”Ethical Bug, what else?” the bug replied in puzzlement.

”It can’t be! Jim or Paul or Jack, those are real names.”

”Well, I’m a conscience, it would be just weird to be called Thomas or something”, the bug laughed.

”I suppose so”, Jack said and pondered about it.

”Anyway, Jack, what are you going to do when you get back to your home?” the bug said, eager to change the subject.

The bug wasn’t used to talking about himself. Usually he was the one asking the questions and guiding the other to do the morally right decisions.

”I’m going to take a hot shower”, Jack said with a dreamy expression. ”A long one.”

”I meant, about your life in general?” Ethical Bug specified.

”Huh? I guess I just continue my business like usually, And collect magical objects. And be miserable for the rest of my life.”

”Hey now, don’t be like that, Jack!” The bug exclaimed in worry. ”I am sure you will be doing all kind of great things in your life, just wait and see!”

Jack turned to look at the bug, listening intently.

”Yes, I know you will do all kind of amazing things! And I will be there to help you along the way. I know you can do anything, Jack! I believe in you.”

Suddenly Ethical Bug felt soft lips on his mouth. The kiss tasted like strawberries. Jack was kissing him!

Jack opened his eyes and noticed what he was doing. His cheeks blushed and his eyes widened in shock.

”I-I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to-” he stuttered and stood up quickly.

He went to the cave’s entrance and had his back turned on Ethical Bug.

”Jack, hey, it’s all right”, Ethical Bug said and came closer to him.

”I honestly wasn’t expecting that but I don’t mind”, the bug continued. ”There is no wrong interaction with your conscience, so don’t sweat it.”

Jack was rubbing his arms and looked tense. His face was still red. There was something very exposed and vulnerable about him as he stood there, half-naked and tiny.

”You must think I’m crazy”, Jack muttered.

”Well, not crazier than Pinocchio”, Ethical Bug said lightly. ”He once wanted to try flirting with me so he would be a hit with ladies.”

”What? No way!” Jack snorted.

”Anyway, I think what you just did… it shows some great progress”, the bug mused out loud.

”Progress?” Jack repeated and cocked his eyebrow.

”Yes, you have come a long way since few days, it really shows you that all you need to do is listen to your heart and conscience!”

Jack’s face fell.

”So you just see me as one of your jobs and nothing else?” he asked, a hint of disappointment in his voice.

”Well sure, you are my biggest task yet!” Ethical Bug replied, obliviously. ”Can’t wait to really work with you!”

Jack didn’t say anything, just sat on one of the rocks and looked at the rain that had turned into a storm.

”What is it, Jack?” Ethical Bug asked and sat next to him again. ”You seem conflicted about something.”

Ethical Bug was an expert to pick up people’s emotions as those often led to urges to do something, usually something foolish.

Jack felt uncomfortable, as if someone was x-raying him. He wrapped his arms around his bare chest.

”I just don’t think… it’s possible”, Jack said after a long silence.

”What is not possible?” Ethical Bug asked curiously.

”To change… ugh, it’s stupid, never mind”, Jack said, feeling too unsure of himself. ”Why I’m still tiny? I am getting worried the potion was a permanent spell.”

”Don’t worry, everything will be better tomorrow, that is what I always say!” Ethical Bug said cheerily.

”What did we talk about not sounding like a self-help book?” Jack said sarcastically.

”Oops, sorry”, Ethical Bug said sheepishly.

It started to get dark and the storm still raged on. Dark forest was still full of dangers despite the Wishing star and the ever-changing map to it had been destroyed. At least now the landscape wasn’t constantly changing anymore.

Jack tried to find a comfortable position but it was hard in the stone ground. He sighed. Bird nests and abandoned caves weren’t exactly things that the pie kingpin had been used to.

Ethical Bug watched the other’s struggles and hesitantly lied down next to him. Jack noticed him and pretended to be occupied with his thoughts to avoid conversation.

Ethical Bug looked at Jack’s soft and round features. Only thing sharp about him was his crooked nose that gave him charisma. His cheeks were round and rosy, Ethical Bug had never seen as chubby cheeks as his. Jack’s light blue eyes were surprisingly intelligent. But also quite pretty and they complimented his pink bob cut nicely. Jack’s hair was a bit disheveled after the rain and walking in nature for a couple of days. He must take good care of his hair normally, Ethical Bug deduced. His gaze fell on his lips and he noticed how full they were.

Despite his not so ideal bed, Jack had fallen asleep while Ethical Bug had been studying him. Ethical Bug was feeling a bit conflicted about his new master. On the other hand, Jack could be vile, mean and uncaring boss but then again, he could show some surprising ways of thinking. Ethical Bug was still confused about the kiss. Why had the man done that? Really, Ethical Bug couldn’t imagine a human attracted to him, it just didn’t make any sense.

Then again, this was Jack Horner. Truly not an ordinary man. Ethical Bug could still remember how the kiss had tasted like the fresh strawberries they had eaten for dinner. The kiss had been a gentle one and surprisingly long. It felt rather surreal to be kissed by one of the most notorious men in the land.

A nagging feeling was distracting him as he closed his eyes. He shouldn’t think too much about Jack’s actions but something in his heart didn’t let go of the way Jack had kissed him. He decided to ignore it.

It was bright and sunny when the duo woke up. Jack had woken earlier and his whole body was aching. He checked his clothes and decided to wear them despite they were still damp. He combed his hair with his fingers as his normal morning routine was to comb his neat hair. He looked at his companion who was still asleep.

Jack walked outside the cave and stretched. He wished he was already back at home, tasting pies and hunting for new magical items. The failure with The Wishing Star still stung painfully and he let out a deep sigh as the memory surfaced again.

He had been so close to get his wish! So very close. But now it seemed that no one got the wish, it felt like such a waste. Jack couldn’t fathom what had made the others give up their wish. Why did they want to destroy the whole star? It didn’t make any sense.

”Oh there you are!” came a familiar voice behind him, startling him.

”I was worried you would have left without me”, the bug said and laughed.

”Huh et tu mi bug? Should we start doing some trust exercises?” Jack asked with a mock concern.

”Now who is sounding like a self-help book!” Ethical Bug exclaimed.

”Ugh, I’m becoming you”, Jack grimaced.

Ethical Bug chuckled. He then proceeded to collect them breakfast (he didn’t bother asking Jack’s help as the other’s survivor skills seemed to be mainly about navigating, not foraging).

They ate in silence, both feeling a bit distracted. Jack eyed the insect when he wasn’t looking, wishing he could read his mind. Ethical Bug looked kind of cute, he had to admit. His round blue eyes were shining in the morning light and he was munching on a berry eagerly.

Jack still wasn’t sure what had came over him when he had kissed the other. Perhaps it had been a spur of a moment kind of thing, the other had said so many supporting things to him that it simply overwhelmed him. He had gotten an odd, warm and fuzzy feeling when Ethical Bug had talked about him.

”So, should we head towards your factory now?” Ethical Bug asked after finishing his breakfast.

Jack shrugged. He wasn’t very excited about the idea of walking in the forest as a mini version of himself. It would take over a day to get through the woods even in his normal size. But he didn’t seem to be changing back any time soon.

Ethical Bug noticed Jack’s concerned frown and tried to lighten up the mood.

”Hey, we could just wait until the effect of that magical snack wears off if you want!”

”But what if… what if it doesn’t and I’m going to be mini-me for the rest of my life?” Jack said with a small voice.

Ethical Bug realised he was serious as his voice choking up and he was in the brink of tears.

Ethical Bug quickly came to pat him on his shoulder comfortingly.

”Hey Jack, don’t worry about it, I’m certain you will be back to your usual self in no time!”

”You keep saying that”, Jack said, trying not to cry in front of the bug. ”I cannot be taken seriously by anyone at the factory if they see me like this!”

”Surely they would still respect you”, the bug objected. ”Size doesn’t matter!”

”How would you know? You have always been small!” Jack retorted stubbornly.

Ethical Bug frowned in annoyance.

”Well, I’m still respected character in the fairy tale lore”, he said pompously.

”You see there bug boy, I’m not exactly a fairyt ale character. So I don’t have the luxury of being respected like you. I need to earn that respect by being big and imposing! My name is Big Jack Horner. for crying out loud!” Jack said with a shaky voice.

”Hey, no need to get so worked up about it, everything will be fine, I promise!” Ethical Bug said and tried to soothe the other by rubbing his back.

They ended up continue their walk towards the edge of the forest, hoping it would distract them and make the time pass quicker. Jack was silent and Ethical Bug filled the silence with endless ramblings about moral and good deeds, hoping some of it would rub on Jack.

They walked and walked and Jack was still tiny. Jack’s expression grow more and more worried with each step and soon Ethical Bug noticed the other’s distress.

”Are you okay, Jack?” he asked.

Jack nodded but looked quite pale compared to his usual rosiness on his cheeks. Ethical Bug felt a bit concerned. Where was that chatty and obnoxious man?

Ethical Bug started to hum a song to distract their minds and lift their mood. Jack glanced at the bug who was humming a soft tune he didn’t recognise. He smiled slightly, relieved he didn’t need to say anything.

Jack was very worried of his size by now. What if he really would be tiny forever? The thought scared him. And he was also nervous about going back to home as a failure. What if everyone laughed at him? It was no secret that he had been after the Wishing Star for years.

Ethical Bug took suddenly Jack’s hand and started to hold it. He squeezed it lightly as if he was comforting the man
.
Jack blushed when he realised the other was holding his hand. He couldn’t understand why the other was doing it. Perhaps it was one of his conscience tricks. Perhaps Ethical Bug wanted to cheer him up or something.

”I have been thinking, Jack”, the bug said after they had walked in silence for a while.

”Hmm?” Jack murmured, still distracted by their hands interlocked.

”What you really need is not magic”, the bug continued.

”But I do-”

””What you really need is a friend”, the bug concluded triumphantly.

”A friend?” Jack said and frowned.

”Someone you can trust, someone to keep you company, someone who supports you and cheers you on!” Ethical Bug said excitedly.

”Well, I can’t have that”, Jack said quietly. ”No one wants to be near me that long.”

Ethical Bug looked at Jack’s face which suddenly looked very sad. It made him ache to see the man so down.

”That’s not true! And besides, I’m sure after you start making some good decisions with your conscience, people would love to be your friends. Heck, you might even find a lover!”

Jack’s blush deepened in embarrassment. Somehow it felt weird to hear such a word as a lover from the bug’s mouth.

”So you really think I should change to…something different?” Jack asked dejected.

Ethical Bug realised that he had said something wrong as the other seemed suddenly quite depressed.

”Oh, you are great the way you are, Jack!” the bug hastily said. ”But if you just thought more with your conscience before doing rash things, I think it would do you some good.”

Jack’s face lightened a bit and it made the bug’s heart flutter for some reason. Without him realising it until now, he really liked to make the other happy and smile. Jack’s smile could be so sweet and genuine.

”You probably realise I’m a hopeless case though”, Jack said as his face became serious again.

”No one is beyond hope!” Ethical Bug said and squeezed Jack’s hand again.

”But… you said I need a friend. Question is, where do I even find one? I’m not exactly the most socially suave person”, Jack said and looked down.

Ethical Bug looked at Jack’s round face which still looked quite sad. Suddenly a realisation hit him. He stopped walking and took Jack’s other hand in his hand as well. Jack turned to look at the bug in puzzlement.

”You know, I have been thinking… being your conscience is nice and all… but maybe… maybe…” the bug started to say hesitantly.

Jack was looking at him expectantly, not sure what the bug was rambling about.

”Well, I could be your friend, Jack”, the bug finally said hoarsely.

Jack’s eyes widened in surprise.

”Just a thought…” the bug said quickly, mistaking his silence for rejection.

”You would want to be my f-friend?” Jack asked in awe.

”Yes! I’d still be your conscience but maybe if we befriended, it would do us mutually good”, the bug said.

Jack looked at Ethical Bug, odd feeling in his chest. He started to smile without realising it.

”I’d like that”, Jack finally said shyly.

Ethical Bug smiled widely as well and hold his hands.

Suddenly something magical started to swirl around Jack’s body. Jack startled and let go of the insect’s small hands.

”Jack?” Ethical Bug asked in worry.

Jack was now surrounded by magic and it lifted him in the air. He started to grow. Soon he was his normal size and the magic stopped working and he fell into ground.

Jack felt disoriented. He opened his eyes and everything seemed a bit blurry. He saw movement in the corner of his right eye.

”Jack! Are you okay?” a worried voice asked.

Jack sat up and rubbed his eyes. His vision swam until it became normal again.

”Ethical Bug?” he asked in confusion.

”Jack, you are back to your normal size!” the bug exclaimed in joy.

Jack touched his body and looked at his big hands. He blinked in confusion. Then he noticed Ethical Bug on ground, looking at him with a wistful smile.

Jack took the bug in his hand gently and touched his green cheek affectionately.

”T-thank you!” he said, overcoming with emotion.

”What for?” Ethical Bug asked in surprise.

”For turning me back to my normal size”, Jack replied, grinning.

”Huh? I didn’t do anything!” Ethical Bug objected. ”The spell must have just finally worn off.”

”Hmm”, Jack hummed but wasn’t convinced.

”So, should we continue our journey?” Ethical Bug asked. ”Now we should be back at home more quickly thanks to your size.”

Jack nodded and put Ethical Bug on his shoulder. They walked and chatted, Jack’s mood was now completely changed into a cheerful one as he had grown back to his usual size.

”I have to say, I’m going to miss you being my size”, Ethical Bug said wistfully after a while. ”It was nice hugging you.”

”Well, we could always experiment with he magical snacks”, Jack said a bit bashfully and then blushed deeply.

Ethical Bug chuckled at Jack’s sudden shyness. But he secretly was looking forward to those experiments.

”I am not sure could the world handle a human sized bug”, Ethical Bug giggled gleefully. ”I would surely wreak some havoc around me.”

”Haha, and here I thought you are a goody two shoes”, Jack laughed jovially. ”It seems you have a wicked mind after all, mister.”

Both of them laughed. They were looking forward what the future had in store for them. An unpredictable duo, the other chaotic and impulsive, the other patient and honest. Surely Jack would have a hard time adjusting to morally less dubious lifestyle but Ethical Bug would be there for him to help him out.

And maybe Ethical Bug would learn to loosen up a bit thanks to the free-spirited pie tycoon. Ethical Bug smiled as Jack was telling some story animatedly. He was looking forward to help Jack out but also if he was being honest, he was thrilled to get to know him better. Who knew what would happen between the two in time?

”Should I first hire a new Baker’s Dozen when I get back?” Jack mused out loud. ”I also need to find some good replacement for my nanny bag… Would you like to go to shopping? Oh yeah, I also need to taste the pie batches,., they have probably been making all kind of errors while I was away. Man, I feel like firing people! Should I lay off people now or when it’s Christmas?”

”Jack!” Ethical Bug shouted in annoyance.

”Just messing with you”, Jack laughed and winked.

Ethical Bug groaned. Then he couldn’t help but join other’s contagious laughter. Sure, it would need some fine tuning but he was certain they were going to be a great duo.

Notes:

I haven't seen any fics about Ethical Bug and Jack so decided to try to write one! Not as good as in my head but I tried.
