My name is Will Solace

And the guy I've liked for a year and a half just told me that I'm Spider-man.

Let me catch you up to speed, okay?

It all started at the beginning of this school year…

“Rise and shine Midtown Science and Technology” is what Piper Mclean says into the school PA system. She and Jason Grace hold the morning announcements, it’s interesting to hear them speak so monotonous when they’re usually more upbeat.

“Don’t forget about your homecoming tickets. Do you have a date for homecoming?”

“Thanks, Jason, but I already have a date.”

“Okay.”

“Yup.”

I walk through the halls and reach my locker when I hear the voice of my half-sister, Kayla Knowles, behind me.

“Knock Knock!” I turn around to face her.

“Who’s there?”

“Athena.” She grins.

“Athena who?”

“Athena in a movie about greek gods.”

“What?”

“You don’t get it?” She looks surprised.

“That’s like the worst joke i've ever heard Kayla”

“Gods, party pooper” She rolls her eyes and joins her friends

In the blink of an eye, 5th period was finished and it was time for lunch, heading into the cafeteria my half-brother, Austin Lake, walked my way.

“Did you remember we have a field trip today?” Austin waves a flyer in front of my face.

“Are you serious? Like, Austin, are you absolutely sure we have to go?” I groan, grabbing the flyer from Austin's hand to inspect it again.
“Yes, Will, I’m absolutely sure, it says so right here” Austin points to the bottom of the sheet and reads it out loud “‘The 11th and 10th grade are going on a field trip to Columbia University, attendance is mandatory.’ The bus leaves like 15 minutes after 7th period, so” He adds while we sit down at our lunch table.

Me and Austin headed outside. Our school, Midtown Tech, planned a field trip to some fancy lab for our chemistry class. I really should’ve studied for those biology tests in my freshman year, I wouldn't have failed and then I would be peacefully sleeping in my bed..consequences of my own actions I guess?

My day honestly wouldn't be anything to write home about.

Actually being at the lab ended up being more interesting than it seemed, not because the guide was great or the story of the underfunded university lab we were touring was compelling and life changing, but because I ditched the group instead of listening to it. I went off on my own adventure which proved to be a bad idea, if i had stayed and listened to the guide i would’ve heard that one of the genetically modified spiders escaped.

I learnt this pretty quickly actually, no need for tour guides. I felt a sharp pain on my hand and looked down to see said spider biting me, I shook it off of my hand quickly.

this might have been a bad idea I thought to myself as I hurried back to join the group.

Niccolò Giulio di Angelo, most commonly nicknamed Nico or MJ stops me.

“Mind if i take a picture of you with the spiders? For the school newspaper.” He says calmly.

“Oh!” I rush in front of the boxes containing spiders and stand with my arms on my hips, kind of like a superhero. “No, I don't mind” My heart beats faster, could it be the spider bite?

Everyone has left the building already, and soon we follow suit.

“Oh, hi sweetie! You’re just in time for dinner.” It was my mom, she was cooking, with Kayla sitting at the kitchen island. Kayla’s my half-sister through our dads side, but she’s lived with us ever since I was a toddler and I wouldn't have it any other way.

“I don't feel well. I’m gonna go to sleep, sorry mom”

“You won’t have a bite?”

“No thanks, had a bite. Everything’s fine”

And when I arrived in my room I immediately passed out.

When I woke up the next day, I felt better than I think I've ever felt before. I went to pick up my glasses, but when I put them on, they were blurry, instead of everything else. I tried putting them down, yet they stuck to my fingers. Looking in the mirror, I looked more fit, that ache I had in my back was gone. Were these the effects of the spider bite?

“God, Kayla, I'm so sorry.” I say to her lifeless body, holding back tears. “If I had known our stupid argument would spiral into this, I would’ve never mentioned it.”

And to think that yesterday morning, me and Kayla were joking around like we’d see each other on monday.
