Chapter Text
Since meeting Carina, Maya had become a lot more careful on the job. This provented her from getting any unnecessary, heroic injuries and thus a lot less visits to the hospital due to injuries.
Knowing how much her wife cared about her taking care of herself she’d also gotten better at letting the doctors look her over and treat some unavoidable injuries.
Today was different though. The blonde firefighter had to be forced by Theo to even step into the aid car, let alone be treated by her friends and later the doctors.
Finally being fed up with the former Olympian’s behavior, Chief Bailey ended up calling for her wife.
That was how Carina ended up rushing to the ER. When she reached her wife, she instantly started looking her over, much to her wife’s frustration.
“Stop it! I’m fine. I just want to get out of here,” the blonde wife said annoyed, pushing the brunette’s hands away from her.
The OB looked to the other firefighters for answers, but the both of them just shrugged. “We don’t know what happened. Andy and Jack found her knocked out in the hallway of the burning building we were evacuating,” Travis explained
The doctor frowned. “Did something fall?” She asked.
Vic shook her head, “We believe one of the victims might have hit her trying to get outside, but since she was by herself, no one knows.”
Carina frowned. “Aren’t you supposed to always stay in pairs?”
Travis and Vic both nodded their heads. “Chief was on scene and ordered her to help the other victims out while Sullivan walked the first ones out.”
Carina angrily rolled her eyes. Of course it had to be those two messing with her wife’s safety. Before she could say anything about it, the whole situation changed, drawing her attention back to her wife.
They could hear a new patient being brought in. “Male mid-fifties with severe smoke inhalation. Possible fractures in the right hand,” the paramedic exclaimed.
Suddenly Maya was on her feet next to her wife a panicked look on her face. “Office,” she gasped out to her wife with a desperate look on her face, while she tried to gasp for air.
”Breath, Bambina, you’re okay,” the doctor tried to say, but it didn’t seem to work.
The blonde grasped her hand and almost pulled her towards the door. “Office, please,” she gasped desperately.
Carina nodded. “Okay, but you have to let Amelia check you over once we get to my office, sì?” She negotiated.
At this point she knew Maya would agree to just about anything to get out of there, so it wasn’t a surprise that she nodded in response.
Carina motioned for the neurologist to follow as the two hastily left the room. By the time the three of them made it inside the elevator, Maya was about to collaps, making both doctors have to support her.
They quickly and efficiantly made their way to the brunette’s office where they could sit the blonde down. “Okay, we’re here, can you calm down for me now?” Carina asked as she kneeled down in front of her. “Come on, Bella, eyes on me.”
A tear rolled down the firefighter’s cheek as her frantic eyes locked onto her wife’s. It took a couple more minutes for her breathing to slow down enough for the panic to subside.
”What happened, Bambina?” Carina questionned, not moving from her position.
The blonde looked down as she wiped a couple more tears off her cheek. “My dad-“ she gasped out, not being able to finish her sentence. She shook her head, causing her to groan.
In that moment, Amelia decided to step in. “Why don’t we check you out real quick. Give you a little time before having to talk about what happened?”
Maya nodded gratefully, so her wife moved to sit next to her, allowing space for the other doctor to do her job. The two never letting go of the other’s hand.
“You definitely have a black eye. I’ll make sure to send a nurse in with an ice pack after I’m done to help the swelling go down. Other then that, there don’t seem to be any major injuries. Are you feeling faint or nauseous at all? Any signs of concussion we need to worry about?”
Maya shook her head. “Just a killer headache and a little nausea, but I don’t feel faint or sleepy or anything.”
”Good,” Amelia nodded, “I don’t think you have a concussion. You might be sporting that black eye for a while though. I’ll make sure to give you some minor pain meds to help with the headache. I don’t think the nausea’s related. Any other injuries?” Maya just shook her head.
With that the doctor finished and promised the couple to come bring the meds in as soon as she could. She sent the nurse in with an ice pack on her way out.
After that it was just the two of them left. Maya was a lot calmer now, but still had a couple of tears roll down her cheeks every once in a while, not that the firefighter seemed to notice.
“Can you tell me what happened now, Bambina?” Carina gently asked.
Maya took in a shaky breath as she started her story: “We were called into a 3 alarm fire. It should have been quite straightforward and it was, until it wasn’t anymore.
Sullivan and I found the first victims, when Chief took over command. She ordered Sullivan to take the victims out and Jack and Andy to come help me find the rest.
I was going to wait there when I heard the call for help. I made my way towards it, when I found a couple. It was my dad and his new girlfriend.
He didn’t want to leave, said the situation was under control and there was no need to evacuate. We argued until finally something exploded not to far away.
My dad started screaming at me for not doing my job properly. When I tried to argue back, stand up for myself, that’s when it happened.
I saw his fist come towards my face, but I couldn’t move,” tears streamed down her face more prominently at this point.
“Next thing I knew I was being carried out by Jack, my dad nowhere in sight,” she finished.
Carina frowned deeply. “Is that why you didn’t want to come here? You assumed he’d been taken here?”
Maya nodded. “I guess he’ll have slipped off the scene unnoticed and collapsed not too far away as he was just brought in a few minutes ago,” she said.
“Oh bambina,” Carina sighed as she pulled the crying blonde into her arms. As much as she was pissed of at Chief Ross, Sullivan and Lane Bishop, her main priority now was her wife.
She held her until the firefighter stopped crying and then a little longer for good mesure.
When she finally pulled back, she held her face and gave her a quick kiss before starting to speak. “When we get home, we’re contacting my lawyers and the police,” she said.
Maya gave her a confused look, so Carina continued to explain. “We have to report this. Your dad physically assaulted you,” she spoke softly.
The blonde seemed to think about it for a while, before nodding in agreement. Carina sighed in relief.
“The lawyers are for the SFD. I’m done watching them treat you unjustly. You were the best captain that station could wish for and now they put your life in danger. I can’t just stand there and watch it happen or you might not come home to me,” Carina’s voice cracked with all the emotions she was feeling.
Maya pulled her wife back into her arms. “I will always do everything I can to come home to you,” she tried to assure you.
Carina placed her forehead against her wife’s. “I know and I trust you. It’s other people like Chief Ross and Sullivan making bad decisions that influence your safety that scare me.”
”Okay,” Maya agreed, “we’ll call the lawyers and my union rep.”
The two of them sat together for a little while longer. They were interrupted by Amelia walking back into the office.
”Sorry it took me so long,” the doctor spoke as she approached the couple. “Still feel okay, Firefighter Barbie? You’re not feeling dizzy or faint?”
Maya rolled her eyes at her friend’s nickname, but shook her head. “Nope, still just the pain. The nausea seemed to have passed as well.”
”Good,” Amelia nodded, “I’ve got your pain meds. You can take two of these three times a day. I’d like to see you again in about a week to see how your eye is doing.”
The blonde nodded. “How about next Tuesday? I can come by right before lunch, so the three of us can eat together after the consult?” She looked between the two doctors.
Carina smiled and nodded in agreement. “Sounds perfect, Bella,” she said.
Amelia smiled too. “Sounds like a great idea! It’ll be nice to actually catch up with the two of you.” She loved spending time with the two when she wasn’t taking care of all the kids.
“Now I’ve spoken to Ruiz and Bailey. Both of you have the next couple of days off, so why don’t you two pack up and go home to rest,” she said. “Doctor’s orders,” she added with a wink to the firefighter.
The three of them chuckled. “Thank you, Amelia,” Maya spoke sincerly, as she stood up and gave her friend a hug. Carina following close behind her.
