Chapter Text
The sun hits its highest peak in Blackrock, it’s rays dancing upon its rooftops and shining through its open windows. It was the usual sunny, somewhat chilly noon. Nothing too special to its residents. But, it was lazy enough to make even the most diligent worker take a break.
The workers in particular were Medkit and Subspace of Blackrock. The scientist was experimenting on poison as usual as Medkit watched. The medic let out a yawn, slowly blinking. It wasn’t too difficult to notice his lack of interest in Subspace’s work. He leans over the counter, struggling to keep himself awake.
“Are you almost done?” He groans with an eye roll, the lethargy starting to get to him. He turns his head to meet Subspace’s gaze, his horns shimmering with the sunlight peeking through the window. “I’d like to start studying right about now.” After a couple seconds of silence, he looked in Subspace’s direction to find him ignoring his words.
“Ahem, Subspace?”
“Earth to Subspace.”
Subspace shot a harsh glare at the medic in training. He had ignored him perfectly the first time, there was no need to bother him. Besides, why did he even want to finish studying? He was supposedly studying anatomy to be a better doctor but…he didn’t even like the job. Hell, Subspace didn’t even know if he was *licensed*. Nevertheless, he decided to tease him anyway, his expression turning mischievous.
“You’re still reading that dumb book? That medical mumbo jumbo? I’m more surprised you haven’t dumped it by now!” he jokes with a sneer, snickering to himself
“You’re still working on that poison of yours. I don’t call that idiotic. Yet, it is.” Quips Medkit, his tone the same as usual. The same exhausted, monotonous, and bitter tone. That same ol’ Medkit. Subspace was so used to his cold tone, he probably could have spotted it from miles away. However, he wouldn’t want him any other way. He enjoyed his company; even if it resulted in them bickering the entire time.
“Mind your backtalk! My experiments and poisons are not idiotic!” Subspace declares, shimmering with pride. He huffs arrogantly, practically sparkling with satisfaction as he stroked his own ego. “You’ll realize that sooner or later… My inventions will be the very backbone and heart of Blackrock!”
Medkit simply rolls his eyes at that statement, a very thin smirk upon his face. “Yes, yes, you keep telling yourself that. Perhaps the shock of finding out you’re useless to Blackrock will humble you”
“Oh, quiet you!?-“
“Whatever you say.” Medkit mumbles, his thin smirk transforming to a small, genuine smile. Subspace noticed it almost instantly. Medkit rarely ever smiled. It was difficult to get him to smile and it was just as difficult for him to smile. However, just that thin grin on his face… It caused Subspace’s heart to skip a beat, the scientist’s face flushing a gentle rose red.
He found himself lost in his lovely expression. He did not know exactly why he kept staring but, something about Medkit being happy made his heart thump with pure bliss. Subspace even found himself smiling too as he continued.
Until Medkit noticed and was a bit perplexed.
“…Hey, can you quit staring at me?“ Medkit asks, raising a brow.
“You might want to check on that poison as well, I think it might be boiling over or…whatever-“
Subspace snaps back to reality, quickly scurrying back to his experiment. He did not want to humiliate himself or cause a lab accident. Cautiously, he picks up the vial of poison he was working on and swirls it to stir it. He sighs in relief once he realizes everything’s okay.
“Phew-“
“Phew, what, Subspace?”
He jumps again at the sound of Medkit’s voice. Why was he of all people making him feel this way? Out of all people, it was the person he loathed the most. Yet he was making him blush like a school girl watching her first crush… That is not how this narrative is supposed to go! He’s Subspace, an evil scientist mastermind!
And yet, he’s not heartless…
Subspace sharply inhales as he turns to meet Medkit’s gaze. “I’m simply happy that my wonderful poison is okay!” He chirps with a happy tail flick, showing off his fangs.
“Mhm, yes yes, surely wonderful. I should get you a prize.” jokes Medkit, sarcastically clapping his hands quietly.
“Didn’t I tell you to shut your trap!?”

Another hour passes as Subspace continues experimenting along with continuing his lighthearted bickering with Medkit. Despite everything, he could not deny enjoying the other demon’s company. After a while, Subspace finally calls it quits and takes a break.
He sighs slightly, his head resting atop the countertop. His eyes wander to Medkit who was busy at work reading the book he had talked about earlier that noon. He scoffs a bit, his lips curling into a smirk.
“What is even so important about that book, huh? What does it even do? You don’t even want to take this job.” He scoots closer to him, his tail curiously wiggling. His squeezes his head near Medkit’s to look at the pages more easily. His eyes were squinted trying to read the small print.
“Well, someone here needs a PHD. …So, I suppose it has to be someone. That someone just so happened to be me.” Medkit explains with a sigh, continuing to read. “It’s a book on anatomy if you’re really that curious.”
The scientist raises a brow curiously before looking at the book a little closer from the corner of his eye. He was attempting to act like he is not interested whatsoever. However, he got sucked into a specific passage about the heart. “…Hypothetically, if my poison were to enter from…” he mutters under his breath, his tail swishing. He adored finding out new ways his poisons could harm another person.
Medkit clicks his tongue in amusement, sliding the book towards him. He nudges his arm softly with his elbow to get Subspace’s attention. “You can borrow it if you want. Just, don’t rip any of the pages. I spent a lot of bux on this.”
“Like hell, i’m interested!?” Subspace yelps squeakily, flustered out of his mind. He swiftly turns away, his cheeks now a cherry red. “…I simply liked the imagery!”
Medkit sat blankly momentarily before his gaze softened. Subspace was horrible at lying to him. He was actually pretty horrible at lying in general. But it warmed his heart a small bit. He thought it was oddly charming and thought nothing of it. He sighs once more, deciding to begin reading out the book aloud.
The sound of his voice was saccharine sweet to Subspace, his tail swaying slowly out of enjoyment. It was like a lullaby or a symphony to him. It was so calming, he could not help but feel his eyes begin to droop. A soft yawn escaped from him as his eyes slowly shut. Soon, he was fast asleep, his light snores and sleepy squeaks filling the laboratory.
Medkit’s gaze softens further, taking his coat off and draping it over the sleeping scientist. He tucked it in slightly to form a makeshift blanket to the best of his ability. “Pft, you really fell asleep to a bedtime story, huh? …Intriguing.” He whispers tenderly, tucking a stray piece of fluff behind his horn. He turns away to walk off but before he left the room he whispers once more to the sleeping scientist:
“Rest well, Subspace. I’ll see you in a bit”
