Taking a seat on his left felt so natural now. Over the past two days without him here you were worried you wouldn't see him again. You could feel the burning in your throat and chest as your legs hung over the balcony besides his. You looked down at the destroyed city below you. You didn't remember most of it. Just a panicked animalistic haze of trying to survive. You felt so lucky now, even with parts of your home scattered about the streets you felt that just being able to be beside your friend again made it all okay. Finally you broke the silence first as you always did. Your voice was a little shakey as you held back tears and turned to face Rocket
"I was worried I was going to sit up here alone again tonight." You spoke out a slight grim chuckle following it as you tried to get over it and not feel so heartbroken. Sitting up here alone the past two nights was painful. After that glowing lunatic came in and wrecked knowhere The guardians just left. All you knew was that rocket was hurt badly and they couldn't treat him here. You were curious as all hell but you felt like you couldn't or at the least shouldn't ask. Finally after felt like a long pause of careful consideration rocket finally spoke. His voice raspy as ever. But he sounded different. Tired, softer in a way.
"Hah! You of little faith. I told you kid ain't a problem I can't solve." He turned to face you now his eyes told a story. Tear stains in his furr his eyes seemed as tired as he sounded. Whatever he had been through it must've been indescribable.
"Do you.. wanna' talk about it?" You asked bluntly not sure what you should say. You knew he never liked to talk about much. The last thing you had talked about together was Peter and Kraglin's mentor Yondu. Rocket had opened up about him and how he made rocket take look inside himself. You looked down to his paw and then up to him for approval. He nodded softly before looking back out at the city as your paw gently laid atop his. He didn't flinch this time which did shock you. You loved feeling his fur again, knowing that he was really here again.
"N-nah I just..." your ears perked up as your eyes looked towards him not wanting to pry but just wanting to be there for him.
"I just..." before you could react you felt him quickly turn to face you then he embraced you. His arms under yours and wrapped around your back, his face nuzzled in gently to your neck and shoulder. You held back a small whimper building in your chest as you put your paws on his back and the back of his head. He shivered at the feeling and you could feel his tears rolling down onto your neck and shoulder. You could feel the hot sadness boiling over and welling up in your eyes. "I'm just so worried he was right." He said with a muffled sniffle into your shoulder.
"Who?" You asked as the worries ran through your mind, but tje answer wasn't whom you expected.
"The big blue moron." You waited for him to continue at his own pace as you pet his soft but dirty and frazzled fur. "He said that I was scared. And I am, (y/n) I'm so damn scared. I'm scared because I can feel this big hole in me. Like somethin's missing. And even though its all over I still feel mad. I feel like I have to fight 'cuz its all I know. Because If I'm not this little monster that people see me as than I'm just some scared little Racoon." He laughed a little in that sad nervous way more of laughing at himself in that moment then anything.
"Even after we won and I know its over I'm scared and crying like some baby."
You could feel your heart tangled up in knots as he started to jab at himself.
"Rocket?" He sighed and started to pull away looking off towards the city to avoid eye contact. It was obvious he felt as if he pushed your boundaries.
"I-I'm sorry I know we ain't close like that-"
You locked one arm behind him and genty touched his cheek, pulling him to look at you directly.
"Rocket you're the strongest person I know. You've told me aboht things that I know I could never survive. It's okay to be scared, to doubt yourself. It doesn't make you weak or lesser. I know that no matter what happens you'll be the good person you are, you'll be the guardian that we need you to be. Because your fear and anger doesn't define you Rocket, your actions do." His eyes seemed so focused on you, maybe looking for approval, or just looking for comfort. The tears in his eyes welled up again as he hugged you tight his face pressed into your shoulder again. His quiet stifled sobs muffled as you let tears stream down your fur. He finally started to wind down as the late hours rolled around. Now you were both sitting side by side again your head leaning on his shoulder. He finally spoke up again, his voice was scratchy and so weak from letting out everything bottled up in his heart.
"Thanks for being here, I'm glad we met."
You nuzzled up into him a bit and replied softly afraid to adimit what you felt you needed to say.
"I waited here these past couple of nights. We...I thought I wouldn't see you again."
Rocket hooked one of his digits of his paw under your chin and pulled you to look in his eyes.
"Listen I ain't going anywhere, and I won't ever leave you. I..." his voice hung up a bit as he looked down int your eyes. He shut his eyes and thought on. Something for a moment before his eyes opened again and he spoke again. "I'm tired of being scared. So I'll just be honest instead, I don't know how to say stuff like that, but I love spending this time with you and you're one of the folks around that make me feel worth a damn. I don't know how I'm gonna make things work but I will okay?" You felt like you could cry all over again. You moved your head back onto his shoulder and looked out over Knowhere.
"I know you will, Rocket. There ain't a problem you can't solve."
