Chapter Text

Shinra thought he would go crazy as the cacophony of voices echoed in his mind. Every step down the school corridor seemed to amplify the whispers that followed him, fueling a sense of unease within him. Heads turned, gazes lingered, and the weight of judgment bore down upon him. And yet, despite the disapproving murmurs, he couldn’t help but let a mischievous grin dance upon his lips.

“Devil. Devil.” The word hung in the air like a malevolent chant, repeated by those who believed they had glimpsed something sinister within him. The accusation filled his ears, a constant reminder of the fear and prejudice that shrouded his existence. How could he smile so boldly in the face of such condemnation?

The whispers intensified, growing in both volume and malice. “That monster,” they muttered, their words laced with a mixture of awe and dread. Shinra felt the weight of their accusations press upon him, threatening to suffocate his spirit. He didn’t want to smile, didn’t want to be seen as the embodiment of their fears.

“That’s so scary,” they whispered in hushed tones, their voices laden with apprehension. The labels they assigned to him, the assumptions they made based on a mere facade, painted a distorted image of who he truly was. Shinra yearned for them to see beyond the surface, to recognize the complexity of his being. But their judgments remained steadfast, casting him as an enigma, an outcast.

“I bet you he’s an alpha,” they speculated, seeking solace in categorizing him within their limited understanding of hierarchical dynamics. They attempted to define him with a label that didn’t fit, a classification that failed to capture the essence of his true nature. Shinra, however, defied their expectations, for he wasn’t an alpha, nor did he possess the commanding presence that often accompanied such designation.

And yet, despite his non-threatening nature, even the omegas, the more timid and reserved individuals, instinctively shied away from him. Their unease mirrored the collective fears of the crowd, their instincts sensing something amiss. Shinra, burdened by their apprehension, yearned to bridge the gap, to dispel the misconceptions and forge connections.

Day after day, he walked the corridors of his school, greeted by wary glances and cautious whispers. The weight of their judgments persisted, but Shinra refused to let it define him. Beneath the surface, he carried a vibrant spirit, a desire to understand and be understood. He longed for acceptance, not just for himself, but for the person he knew he could become.

With unwavering determination burning within him, Shinra vowed to become a hero, not only to prove his detractors wrong but also to shatter the deeply ingrained stereotypes surrounding omegas. The weight of their judgment, the relentless whispers that followed his every move, fueled his resolve to show them that omegas could possess strength and resilience equal to alphas.

Yet, day in and day out, he found himself trapped in the role of the feared devil, the figure that provoked speculation and dark gossip among his peers. The relentless rumors painted him as a harbinger of doom, a predator lurking in the shadows, ready to strike at any moment. The weight of their accusations was a heavy burden to bear, but Shinra refused to succumb to resentment. He couldn’t bring himself to hate them, for he understood that fear often bred ignorance.

It was a lonely path that lay before him, especially as his first heat approached. While alphas relied on their packs for support and comfort during such vulnerable times, Shinra knew he would face it alone. There would be no alpha to scent him, to provide solace in the face of his own turbulent emotions. And yet, he was determined to survive, to prove that an omega could endure and emerge stronger on their own.

Training became his solace, his sanctuary amidst the chaos of the Fire Force Training Academy. Shinra threw himself into the rigorous regimen, pushing his limits and challenging himself to excel in every aspect. The fire within him burned brighter with each passing day, propelling him forward even when the weight of their expectations threatened to extinguish his resolve.

He resolved to protect everyone, even if they refused to lend him their support. Shinra yearned to stand as a pillar of strength, shouldering the burdens of the world like the hero he aspired to be. Through relentless training and unwavering determination, he sought to forge a path that would earn him the respect and recognition he desired.

Silently, he navigated the academy, concealing his true nature as an omega. The world remained oblivious to this aspect of his identity, unaware of the strength that pulsed within him despite societal preconceptions. Shinra knew that one day, when he had proven himself worthy, he would reveal his truth. The knowledge of his omega status would serve not as a source of shame, but as a testament to the resilience and capabilities of his kind.

And so, he pushed forward, devoting himself to the challenges thrown at him by his mentors. The obstacles they presented were merely stepping stones on his journey towards greatness. Shinra understood that he had the power to reshape the narrative, to rewrite the misconceptions that shrouded omegas in the world of heroes and warriors, or at least to try.

He made it. After months of perseverance and hard work, Shinra found himself a member of the 8th Company of the Fire Force. It was a small and dedicated group entrusted with the task of uncovering the truth behind infernals and human combustion. This opportunity felt like a perfect fit for him, a chance to bring an end to the tragedy of lives lost to fire.

Within the company, Shinra discovered that his captain was none other than Captain Obi—a man who embodied the qualities of discipline and strength typically associated with alphas, yet possessed a compassionate heart akin to an omega. It was a reassuring combination that made Shinra feel at ease in his presence.

However, his experiences with Lieutenant Takehisa, a beta, were quite different. The lieutenant’s demeanor bordered on harshness, especially towards Shinra. Yet, despite the rough exterior, there was an underlying fondness in the beta’s scent—a peculiar contradiction that piqued Shinra’s curiosity.

To Shinra’s dismay, his old classmate Arthur Boyle had also joined the 8th Company. Arthur remained as delusional as ever, an alpha whose eccentricities never failed to irritate Shinra. Nevertheless, in the midst of their occasional clashes, a bond was forming—a camaraderie born out of shared experiences and the challenges they faced together.

As months passed, the 8th Company began to feel like a home for Shinra. He grew fond of his fellow members—Captain Obi, Lieutenant Takehisa, Maki, Iris, and even the exasperating Arthur. Trust started to blossom within him, a sense of reliance on the team that had become his extended family.

He should have known this would happen.

With the inevitability of his approaching heat, Shinra knew he had to confront the truth. He mustered the courage to visit Captain Obi in his office, his voice wavering as he spoke up. The captain, engrossed in his work, responded without lifting his head, unaware of the weight behind Shinra’s words.

For the umpteenth time, Shinra cursed his facial tick, a nervous twitch that betrayed his true emotions. He forced a smile, though it felt unnatural, and as he struggled to find his voice, his throat grew dry.

The change in Shinra’s demeanor caught Captain Obi’s attention. His eyes observed the young firefighter, sensing his distress, and he immediately directed his full attention to Shinra. “Did something happen?” Captain Obi inquired, his concern mirroring the readiness he displayed during infernal attacks. Shinra took a deep breath, finally reaching the tipping point of his internal struggle.

“No, nothing happened. It’s just that…” Shinra paused, his anxiety causing him to bite the inside of his cheek. But the pain was nothing compared to the overwhelming need to confess. With a burst of determination, he gathered his courage and revealed his true identity.

“I’m not actually a beta. I’m an omega. I’ve been wearing scent patches to hide my true scent, but my heat is approaching in a few days, so I decided to let you know in advance. I’m… I’m sorry for lying,” Shinra confessed, his words tumbling out in a rush. Captain Obi stared back at him, his eyes widening in shock at the revelation. The room fell silent, the weight of Shinra’s confession lingering in the air, uncertain and open to interpretation.

The air in the room seemed to shift as Captain Obi’s pride-filled scent enveloped the space. It radiated trust and acceptance, washing away Shinra’s initial anxieties and transforming his forced smile into a genuine one. The captain’s wide eyes closed, a subtle sign of relaxation as he attempted to maintain his composure.

“I understand. There’s really no need to apologize,” Captain Obi responded, his voice laced with reassurance. “I’m sure you had your reasons for hiding it, but I’m genuinely glad that you trusted me enough to confide in me. Just let me know the date when you expect it to start so I can update the schedule. And if there’s anything you need from me, don’t hesitate to ask. I can go out and buy you a kit if necessary.”

Shinra nodded appreciatively. “Thank you, Captain Obi. I already have a kit, so there’s no need for you to buy one for me. I’ll provide you with the date and other details later. However, right now, there’s one thing I would like to ask of you,” he said, his face turning a deep shade of red, clearly embarrassed by the forthcoming request.

His voice trembled slightly as he continued, his words filled with vulnerability. “Um, would you… would you let me borrow some of your clothes? I mean, I would like to have your scent in my nest,” Shinra stumbled over his words, his embarrassment growing more palpable. “But please, you don’t have to if you’re not comfortable with it. It’s just a request.”

A heavy silence hung in the air, and Shinra’s mind raced with apologies, regretting his audacity to make such a personal request. But then, Captain Obi’s scent intensified, filling the room with its powerful aroma. It invaded Shinra’s senses, causing him to instinctively take a step back, momentarily overwhelmed by the surge of emotions.

“Captain, your scent… it’s very strong,” Shinra managed to force out, his voice quivering with surprise. The realization seemed to wash over Captain Obi as his eyes widened, perhaps in acknowledgement of the fact that his own scent was more potent than he realized. The tide of embarrassment replaced the earlier pride, now a calmer and more composed aura.

“Oh! I’m sorry. It’s hard for me to control myself sometimes,” Captain Obi apologized, his voice tinged with self-consciousness. “But, yes, you’re free to borrow as much of my clothing as you want. I’ll make sure to bring it down to your room on the day of your heat. Alright?”

Shinra nodded, a mixture of gratitude and relief flooding through him. “Thank you, Captain. I really appreciate it.”

As the room began to settle, Captain Obi suddenly remembered an important detail. “Oh, Shinra! I almost forgot to ask. Is this something you would like me to keep private, or are you comfortable with me discussing it with the rest of the 8th?”

Shinra’s mind swirled with thoughts, weighing the pros and cons of sharing his truth with the entire company. He hesitated for a moment, considering the impact it might have on their dynamics and his own vulnerability. But as he glanced at Captain Obi, his trusted leader, a newfound confidence welled up within him.

“I’m not sure that I’d like to talk about it right now,” Shinra replied thoughtfully, “but I’ll tell them tomorrow. Could you come with me when I do? I’m scared of doing it alone.” He looked at Captain Obi, silently pleading for his support.

The captain’s expression softened, and he nodded without hesitation. “Of course, Shinra. I’ll be there with you every step of the way. You don’t have to face it alone.”

Gratitude flooded over Shinra, knowing he had someone by his side in this pivotal moment. They continued to talk idly, discussing their plans for the upcoming days and the tasks at hand within the 8th Company. The conversation allowed Shinra’s nerves to settle, knowing he had the unwavering support of his comrades.

After a few more minutes, Shinra finally stood up to leave. He turned to Captain Obi, a mix of determination and gratitude evident in his eyes. “Thank you again, Captain. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Captain Obi smiled warmly, placing a reassuring hand on Shinra’s shoulder. “You’re welcome, Shinra. Remember, you’re not alone in this. We’re a team, and we’ll always have each other’s backs. Take care, and I’ll see you tomorrow.”

With the weight unaware to him lifted off of his chest, Shinra left Captain Obi’s office.
