Work Text:

One.

      Two.

      Three.

Four. This was the fourth consecutive feint he had made; this was his limit. Or so everyone thought, who were surprised when Nagi took another turn on his axis, making the fifth fake volley, followed by a sixth to get rid of the other Argentina defender coming towards him. No need to wait any longer, he had a free kick, and so he kicked the ball with all his might, the opposing goalkeeper lunged and stretched out his arm, but it was impossible to stop him. The ball crashed into the net, ending the World Cup final.

He dropped to his knees in front of the goal and raised his fist as he had done years before in the match against the U-20s, they had won. He didn't have time to react when he felt weight on him and fell straight to the ground on his chest, his teammates, his friends, had thrown themselves at him as they celebrated, he heard the screams of the audience and his team. But he had something to do, he rolled on the ground, brushing Isagi and Bachira off him, and looked up, searching for those purple eyes he loved so much, it didn't take him long to find him, he was coming straight at him at full speed with open arms, and it didn't take words to know what they both wanted. Nagi stood up and braced himself for the impact of Reo in his arms, grabbing him around the waist as he jumped on top of him and wrapped his arms around his neck, wrapping his legs around his body. Nagi was tired, he could feel the energy draining from his body, but he would never let go of Reo. He hugged him back with all his strength, Reo rested his head on Nagi's shoulder, they both felt the wetness of their bodies and how they both trembled, but being like this, holding each other, was the best feeling they could have.

Reo squeezed the back of Nagi's shirt tightly, inhaled hard and let the air out, then leaned closer to the other's ear.

“We did it, my treasure.” Nagi's arms squeezed him tighter, and Reo reciprocated by doing the same. They had fulfilled their promise. Their dream.

-

Isagi stands in front of the team, taking his place as the leader, ready to take the world cup in his hands and raise it in front of everyone, proving that Japan had been the victor. There was a series of speeches that Nagi didn't bother to listen to, no matter how much he had been told to pay attention, but he could only focus on how Reo's eyes were shining brighter than ever as he looked at the world cup on the pedestal. He and Reo had achieved that, that last goal was only possible because of their close bond that allowed them to play as one mind. Nagi was happy to have caused that expression in the person he loved the most.

He came to himself when he heard the applause from the crowd, he identified that they had finally quieted down and it was Isagi's turn to receive the cup and give his own speech. Isagi was his friend, yes, but he didn't care what he was going to say at the moment, Nagi was more focused on what he planned to do when he got the chance.

He clapped his hands as he watched everyone else do so, Isagi had the cup in his hands and had the biggest smile he'd seen on him since he'd met him at Blue Lock. He started walking towards them, towards the podium where the rest of the team stood, ready to celebrate with everyone and lift the fruit of their efforts together.

They shouted and cheered when he finally arrived with them, though they couldn't make too much of a fuss. Isagi stood in the centre, where Shidou lifted him up as everyone surrounded him excitedly. Nagi prepared himself for what was coming, Isagi raised the cup with both arms towards the sky and the world exploded in front of them, the applause and celebrations were not long in coming, Nagi could feel Bachira climbing on his shoulders while others pushed him from one side to the other, but his eyes were focused not on the trophy he was hoping to win, but on the owner of his life, Reo, who was silently crying with joy, he could see the reflection of the cup in his eyes, and Nagi couldn't ask for a better view than that.

It took a few minutes before they managed to calm down a bit, not that Nagi wasn't happy about winning, however, there was something more important on his mind than the world cup.

He approached Isagi, who still had the trophy in his arms, he watched him carefully, hoping that the shorter one would understand what he wanted, which apparently worked, because Isagi only shook his head as he smiled warmly and handed him the trophy, maybe he didn't know exactly what was going to happen, but he had an idea.

Nagi felt the weight of the cup in his arms, the real cup, the golden one and not a replica. He watched it carefully and decided to go ahead with his plan, he wasn't nervous because he knew his best friend perfectly well, but that didn't stop his hands from shaking a little in anticipation of what was going to happen.

His companions turned to look at him, he could not identify exactly what they wanted to say with their looks, so he ignored them and walked towards the one who had caused him to be here, Reo.

Reo was wiping his face of tears when his eyes met Nagi in front of him, with the object he had most hoped for in his arms. He looked at him in confusion, until the taller one decided to speak.

“Years ago, I made a promise to you, Reo, we promised that we would win the world cup together, and today, we finally fulfil our dream," Reo felt more tears gather in his eyes and a smile appear on his face. “But, I don't want our dreams to end here. I want to continue dreaming by your side.”

And with those words, in front of thousands of people, he knelt down in front of the person who had given him a reason to continue living. He lifted the cup in front of him, placing it at the level of Reo's chest, who had opened his eyes in surprise and didn't seem to understand what was happening.

“So, Reo, giving you the world cup that you so longed for, I wish for us to continue our promise, in which we said we would be together until the end, and for you to agree to marry me to fulfil this and many more dreams.”

There was a moment of silence before the whole stadium erupted in cheers and celebrations, his own teammates didn't know what to do, some shouted along with the other people while others just watched the scene in front of them in surprise. But no one was more surprised than Reo himself, who could barely see behind the tears falling from his eyes, his hands went to his face to hide it, he couldn’t find his own voice to respond. A whole minute passed, with Nagi kneeling in front of him not knowing what to say or do.

“Reo? Are you all right?” Nagi asked worriedly, lowering the trophy and looking intently at the other's face.

“Idiot," he said between his hands, "we're not even dating.” He looked down as he felt everything around him tremble with shouts and questions from his companions.

“Really? It's such a hassle, can't we just get married?” Nagi asked in that voice that Reo loved so much. He couldn't resist turning to look at him and taking his hands away from his own face, which was completely red.

“Dumbass, I didn't even say yes!” he shouted as he pointed a finger at him, his nerves filling him more and more.

“Is that a no?” His voice was so low and sounded so sad that it made Reo's knees tremble even more. Nagi hadn't expected this outcome, he was sure it would be fine, because it was Reo and him.

“Yes!" he said quickly, leaving the audience in silence, "No, wait, that's not what I meant!” He took his time as he clenched his face in his hands, his nerves prevented him from speaking, he had always been good with words, but maybe it was his turn to act.

Without further thought, he hugged Nagi with all his might, the world cup between them, he knew he would regret this later when he saw the media, but sometimes you had to make certain sacrifices. And so, he brought his face close to Nagi's and kissed him. He kissed him with every ounce of love he could find in his heart, with every feeling Nagi made him feel, the good, the bad. He kissed him as if the world was going to end. He kissed him with the promise of a future together.

The kiss didn't last long, Reo could hear the future scolding from his parents and honestly didn't want to make it more complicated; he pulled away a little, still with his arms around his body. He looked at him lovingly and moved his hands to where Nagi held the world cup, placing his hands on top of his.

“Of course I want to marry you, my treasure.”

The people in the stands screamed with joy at the couple, their friends and colleagues joined in the excitement and celebrated, but they didn't care, the only thing that was important to them at that moment was each other and the smile they gave each other, the signing of a promise, one in which they would continue to dream together.
