Earth-9

Location: Pine Barrens

It was a chilly spring night. The only light from the forested area of Pine Barrens came from the stars overhead. Tonight, Mar'i Grayson appreciated the darkness, as it made it easier to evade her abductor. The eight-year-old had escaped the house that she'd been kept in for a week several hours ago. It was enough time for Dunfield to realize that she was gone.

The girl trembled as she leaned against a tree. Her whole body hurt, and the taste of blood was on her lips. The hired thugs Dunfield had hired to abduct her had really done a number on her. Of course, it didn't help she'd put up a fight. "Not that fighting in her civilian form did her any good," she thought, gritting her teeth.

If only she'd been abducted as Nightstar and not Mar'i, then she could save herself. Her eyes moved down to the ring on her right hand. The ring served as a concealer device, masking her alien attributes she'd inherited from her mother. The temptation to remove it was strong, but she held back. Dunfield was a smart man. If Nightstar suddenly appeared, it wouldn't be hard for him to put two and two together.

Mar'i sighed. As much as she wanted to escape, she couldn't risk putting her family's secret life in danger. Plus, it was her fault for getting into this situation. She should have noticed something was off about her teacher and gone to her father. Instead, she had kept quiet, thinking she was being crazy for suspecting her favorite teacher. Now it was too late.

A twig snapping brought her out of her thoughts. A cold sweat overcame her, and she lost her ability to breathe. Slowly, she peeked out from her hiding spot. Thanks to her alien blood, her eyesight was slightly better than a human, so she could see in the dark. A few feet away from her was Dunfield's form, a flashlight in hand. Quickly, she moved her head back.

Mar'i trembled and looked back to where Dunfield was. The man was inspecting a thicket of bushes. Slowly she raised up, being careful to avoid making noise. Despite the pain she felt, her fear and will to leave won out. She made her move.

Location: Bludhaven

While Mar'i ran for her life. Eight-year-old Jack Logan lay on his bed, wishing he could help find his missing friend. It had been a week and almost a day since Mar'i Grayson had been abducted from her home. In that time period, he had watched his Uncle Dick go from the somewhat cheerful man that he was to a broken and angry individual. His uncle had not stopped searching for his last living daughter since she'd been taken.

Jack knew his uncle would be destroyed if Mar'i didn't come back alive. The man had already lost his Aunt Starfire and daughter June, Mar'i's twin sister. If Uncle Dick lost Mar'i too, Jack doubted he would ever recover. Even now that he and Aunt Barbra had just welcomed John into their family a couple of months ago.

It was while he was thinking this that he felt his soul being pulled. Suddenly, he found himself in a wooded area. Looking around, he was shocked to see Mar'i hidden behind a tree. The boy studied his friend's appearance and was horrified by how beaten up she was. "Mar'i," he said.

The girls head snapped up at his voice and her eyes widened. "Jack, is that you? What are you doing here, you have to get away!" she said.

Jack frowned. "Mar'i tell me where you're at. I'll tell my Mom and she'll tell your dad, and we can rescue you," he said.

Mar'i's eyes widened. "Their no time. Dunfield is on my trail. Oh Jack, he's going to," she started, but couldn't finish her sentence.

Jack's eyes widened, and he gulped. No, no, no, he couldn't let this happen. If only there was away. Wait! Maybe there was away. "Mar'i, I know I'm not the best user of magic yet, but maybe I can help summon you to Bludhaven, or at least a safer place away from here," he said.

The girl stared at him in surprise. "You can do that?" she asked.

Jack bit his lip. In all honest he had never tried to teleport someone before, but he had to try! He couldn't let his best friend die. "Yes, I can," he said. Immediately, he began to whisper the spell he'd seen in one of his mother's books. Without thinking twice, a portal opened up beside Mar'i.

The girl's eyes widened before a few tears fell from her eyes. "Thank You, Jack. Hopefully, I'll see you soon," she said, before jumping into the portal. Once she was gone, he felt himself being pulled back into his body. Eyes widening, he ran to go tell his mother.

Mount Justice

Nov, 04.

Dick Grayson eyed the band of outsiders he and his teammates had rescued. Although he was unsure about Victor, he was certain the rest of them were ready to join the Justice League's covert ops team. If they wanted to, that is. He just about to start his speech when to his complete shock, a portal opened. To further his surprise, a young girl who looked no older than eight came flying out.

The girl somehow landed on her feet as the portal closed behind her. A beautiful set of blue eyes looked up at them. "Help me," she said, before collapsing.

Dick immediately sprung into action and ran to the fallen child. He paused in shock as he took in the girl's appearance. A trail of blood leaked out of her mouth, her skin was covered in bruises, and her left arm was obviously broken. Anger coursed through him as he looked at the injured child.

Conner and Artemis came running up behind him. Conner cursed and Artemis hissed. Dick gently picked the girl up and turned to his teammates. "We need to get her to a doctor, now!" he said.

The two older heroes nodded in agreement. Artemis suddenly had a realization. "We can't just take her to a hospital, we don't know where she came from," she said.

Dick gritted his teeth. He hated to admit it, but Artemis was right. Thinking quickly, he made up his mind. "Then we'll take her to Garfield's. I heard that he had an infirmary put into his place," he said.

The others nodded and took off.
