It's a peaceful Sunday in the Labrador-heeler household. Jean-luc, the man of the house peacefully reading the morning newspaper with a cup of coffee, hears a loud thud from outside the porch. Out of curiosity out the door he sees his wife, Bluey, a certain blue heeler that took his heart the moment they met one summer vacation.
Said blue heeler wheeling a huge cardboard box of what seems to be a bench swing. She notices her husband standing outside the porch, stopping in her tracks and waving at him she gives him a smile as bright as the morning sun
"Morning Babe! Look what just came in the mail today!"
"Mon bleu, since when did you plan to even buy something like this? You didn't even tell me?"
Bluey bashfully puts a hand behind her head and laughs, "Err.. Surprise? I just wanted to have something for us to sit on in the backyard while the kids are playing. I think they're gonna enjoy this too."
Jean-luc smiles giving Bluey a kiss on the cheek before going to the other end of the large box
"Here, I'll help, let's get this up to the backyard and set it up."
----Afternoon-----
"Maman! Papa! Can we play with the cardboard?
The elder child, Lily called out to her mum and dad.
“Oui, Allez-y, just dont make too much of a mess!” Jean-luc replied.
“Oui papa!” Lily called back while holding her little brother's hand, come on Louis! Let's pretend we're fishes! And this is the water!"
She proceeds to point to the layer of bubble wrap spread across the grass.
"I'll be the mama fish and you'll be my baby fish!"
“Oo! Okay!” Louis, Lily's younger sibling follows her to flop around the bubble wrap.
"The cartoon dog says to put cardboard underneath the thing first!" Bluey points to the instruction manual
"Amour, i'm not taking advice from a cartoon dog! I know what I'm doing! Jean-luc retorted as he chucks the cardboard next to the kids''
"Oo! Louis! Pretend this is land!" Lily points to the cardboard in front of them, transitioning from fish to reptiles crawling about in the land
"Amour, can you handle it?" Jean-luc looking at bluey with a worried expression.
"I got it, i got it!" Bluey tries as she struggles to pull up the other end of the bench, it eventually slips from her hand falling to the ground.
"I don't got it. I'm sorry" Bluey said, dejected.
"Oh no the edge is cracked.." Jean-luc leans over to check the damage. "I guess this is why the cartoon dog said we need to put cardboard down," Bluey said sheepishly.
After a few more shenanigans of Bluey and Jean-luc attempting to build up the bench, little by little the labrador-heeler twins have gone through all the various stages of evolution from fishes, to lizards to birds to monkeys and eventually to realizing consciousness in the manner of cavedogs.
As jean-luc is almost close to finishing up the bench, Bluey starts to tidy up by placing styrofoam packaging into one box and dropping it into the backyard. The siblings took notice of the giant pile of foam as an idea rang into their heads.
"Louis! Let's be builders!" Lily blurted to a resounding "yeah!" From her younger sibling
----Sundown----
"Build. Build, build" Teenager! The stables are finished!" Lily walks up to Louis as he's in the middle of creating a ship of some sort.
"Thank you mama! But i'm not a teenager anymore, i'm a grownup now! I made a spaceship so i can go and explore space!" Louis points to his greatest creation.
"You were always such a clever thing.." Having swapped roles, Lily walks up to Louis and gives him a hug.
"Bye mum. Thanks for always looking out for me."
Bluey sits next to jean-luc as she watches the development of their kid's game. Only then realizing how familiar it all felt. It was all too familiar. It felt like yesterday when her and her sister bingo played the same game when they were kids. And now she's here. Married with a loving husband and kids of her own, watching the same game she played, knowing that one day in the future, it will be their turn to experience this moment once again.
She leaned her head on Jean-luc's shoulder reveling in her warmth as they watch louis run around in his spaceship
"We made them". Bluey muttered under her breath as she held her husband's hand.
Right now she is happy. Content. Living a life she never would've thought to ever happen. But at the back of her mind she knows, this is what she's always wished for. A loving family.
