    Scorpius closed his eyes, swallowing his bitter disappointment and pain.

    This was why he had been avoiding Herbert, why he had tried so hard to put distance between them, his best friend's infectious joy so special and fragile, and Scorpius was greedy.

    He had hoped, had dreamed that a summer apart could clench his desires, that he could somehow run away from himself, change who he was, become someone who didn’t need Herbert as much as he needed air.

    Scorpius didn’t want to share Herbert with anyone, jealousy tearing him apart every time he lingered on the fact that he had nothing left, that there was nothing in Herbert that didn’t belong to anyone but him anymore.
