Pulling away from the steps

Summary:

Wrote this during a brain fart moment

Work Text:

After the Mario movie (like a week after)

Luigi is kinda respected in the town but not really. Luigi isn’t entirely remembered, some don’t even say his name. As suffers in silence, he hopes one day he gets the courage to run away. But he’ll never have that courage, he can’t leave Mario. Even if people disregard him as a “cowardly, spineless wimp” (Toad’s word not his).

It’s safe to say that Luigi doesn’t like himself that much, he always felt like he wasn’t match up with his brother. Mario can run, jump and punch better than he ever could.

Sure, Luigi can jump higher than his brother, but he can’t reach what he achieved. And he’s okay with that, as much as he can be alright. He’s fine with people not knowing how to say his name correctly, he’s fine with people even talking trash to him in front of his face. (He can grin his teeth and bear it).

But Mario can’t.

He refuses to let his brother be disrespected. His brother deserves more than this!

Luigi always felt bad when Mario had to correct someone, or even made sure he was acknowledged at all. Luigi sometimes wished he wasn’t ever born, maybe it would’ve made Mario’s life easier?

So he distanced himself from Mario. And Mario hated it, he hated it so much.

It was the late evening and Mario and Luigi just got home, Mario had once again saved Princess Peach from the scaly hands of Bowser(like he always did), and Luigi was just tagging along for the ride( as usual). As the front door creaked closed, Luigi made a beeline for his room. He didn’t want to talk about today, or any of the other days before this.

(He tripped on his own feet and almost fell in lava. Bowser also rocked his shit. Hard. His face was covered in brushes and he had a big black eye.)

Mario went after him, he wasn’t gonna to this again,(it’s been like this for days), “Luigi!” Mario calls out his brother’s name, Luigi walks quicker. Mario follows. Mario’s hand nearly grazed Luigi’s fingers, the green plumber jerked away.

Luigi was face-to-face with the door to his room, ready to rip the door open and slam shut behind him within a instant. So he did, right in Mario’s face. The silence after the silence was expected, so was the knocks and Mario attempting any crumb of conversation. But it was different this night.

You could hear a desperate cries of his older brother, begging him to just talk to him, he misses talking to him. It nearly made Luigi flinch.

Luigi flopped onto his bed, folding a pillow around his ears. He tried oh so desperately to block out the noise.

Mario got more and more upset, banging harshly. Please Luigi! Just tell me what happened! What did I do wrong?! His voice sounded so wounded and teary, so on the edge of tears. Luigi couldn’t take it.

Luigi caved, he might not like himself that much, but damn it all Donkey Kong does it hurt when Mario cried. He knew he shouldn’t’ve opened that damn door, he couldn’t stand seeing Mario cry, no matter the reason. The creaking door opened and there Mario was, a small river of tears down his chubby little face.

Luigi’s heart cracked and shattered into a pile of dust. Mario head first into Luigi’s shirt, sobbing.

Luigi finally opened up and broke down his walls. It only made Mario cry more.

Let’s hope this is a stepping stone for the future.
