The Night-Light in your Pocket

Summary:

L is keeping a secret from Light Yagami. Light finds himself in a position he wouldn't have expected; more specifically, a few things are missing. Light has an affinity for shiny things, and sometime puts them in his pockets. L has Light in the back of his pockets, along with a key to his secrets. The two bond and break, but not everything happens at once.

Notes:

You know the drill. My serious works are capitalized and very specific. My "for fun" works are not. I'm just trying to expand a little on the fandoms I write for. Feel free to request fics or oneshots in the comments of any of them. The title may or may not be inspired by Animal Crossing: New Horizons-- and a Twitter handle of mine that only existed for like a week before I decided that Twitter is stupid. My hand is already cramping... And I haven't written anything yet.

Chapter 1: Jade, Jadeite, and Nephrite

Chapter Text

Light always found pride in his appearance, his health. He was a prime example of the Laws of Attraction. If one were to experiment with them, Light would surely be the subject at the very top of the scale. The apex. He wasn't an apex predator, but he'd always felt as if he had the potential to do harm if he were to try. The Kira case made him relish the privilege of taking care of himself even more. He could freely spend hours being vain and looking at all of the minor imperfections on his face and body if he really wanted to. He didn't, but the fact he was even able to was enough for him.

He was taking a casual stroll on his day off from work. The summer weather was agreeable. He'd taken to monochromes as of late-- perhaps that was because he wore business casual so very often. He was a college student at To-oh, the top student after L decided he was too bored to share the spot at the top with him. He didn't think about L all that much anymore, not since the Kira case closed. They didn't speak anymore, and L went back to wherever he went. Light thought it was arrogant of him to just pick up and leave-- Even offering Light the Task Force Headquarters building as a joke. Light knew that if he saw L again-- spoke to him personally again-- he'd be an Inspector or a Chief or something similar, and he'd ask for the building, all expenses paid, to return that arrogant attitude.

He was about to pick up the pace a little, but his brown eyes caught something shimmering on the sidewalk. He stopped walking for a moment after realizing what it was-- a piece of uncut jade.

Now, Light usually wasn't the type to pick random things up off of the street. But this was odd, and he had to wonder why someone would toss it to the side. He picked it up. The streets were somewhat busy; no one was watching. Even if they were, it wasn't as if it mattered. He was a paid police intern, a college student, and it was a gemstone. But, as usual, Light was observant, and considered many things in his mind irrationally. Considering irrational outcomes certainly prevented being blindsided.

Light pocketed the jade. it was dirty, but he'd clean his clothes as routinely as usual, and clean the jade as well. Perhaps he'd give it to Sayu on his next visit to his childhood home, to deflect from her nagging about his love life. She took after their parents, honestly, when it came to nagging Light about a potential love interest. Either way, his walk continued without issues, and he watched the sky fade and blur like watercolors. The sunset was beautiful, of course, and he made sure to return home before everything was too dark.

He placed his house's keys on the hook by the door, and glanced at the pictures and award plaques placed here and there. His apartment was roomy and looked lived-in, but it was clean and well-organized, just how he liked it. Light had checked his savings just the other day-- he'd be able to apply for a mortgage on a real house with his father's wisdom to accompany him once he was out of college.

He didn't want to rush things. There was no need to-- he had all the time in the world. Putting work out of his mind, Light formed an itemized agenda in his head. He'd shower, put his clothes in the washing machine, heat up his leftovers from yesterday for dinner... and then he'd clean that jade. He wasn't a geologist, but he'd certainly check it for authenticity, maybe purchase a book about gems to kill time, and return to what he was reading over a cup of oolong tea: No Longer Human, by Dazai Osamu.

Everything these days revolved around him killing time. He'd have already suffered the long drop if he'd killed as many people as he'd "killed" hours.

That statement felt... oddly ironic. He pushed it to the back of his mind for later, as he did everything else, and went to grab some clothes to lounge in while he completed the rest of his routine.

At this rate, he'd be in bed by 10:00 p.m. That was certainly ideal.

Notes:

I've liked Lawlight for a few years. Here's my spin on the whole "Light loses his memories and works for L" trope. This is the first chapter-- There might be a recap later on. I have an asylum AU in my back pocket that I'm working on with a role-play friend. Hi, Shadow, if you're reading this.
