When You Say Nothing at All

Summary:

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me,
There's a truth in your eyes saying you'll never leave me.
The touch of your hand says you'll catch me wherever I fall,
You say it best, when you say nothing at all.

Work Text:

Jean and Marco have arrived at their hotel after nearly an hour on the train. It was almost as big as they imagined it to be: very tall, geometric shapes build into it, about to have more than fifty rooms and trees were planting at every corner. Jean quoted 'We could be treated like nobility in a place like this.', that comment made Marco quietly giggle inside.

They were given the keys to room 76, which they said to be the most exquisite hotel room they had ever stayed in. The room was all painted in a creamy white color, the furniture like the bed, table and drawers were made of fine wood, the bathroom was well polished and cleaned up, and the best part of it all was the balcony. From there the two boyfriends could see the public swimming pool below them and the beautiful beach in the sunset - it'd make a great desktop background.

Jean placed down his and Marco's suitcases on each of their beds (gladly they managed to get a room like this cause they're not ready to share a single bed) and he walked out to gaze at the horizon of the beach. Marco soon joined him, standing right at his side with their hands locking.

"Damn, Armin has no idea what he's missing out right now." Jean commented. "But I can also see why he would give it up, huh."

Marco didn't respond, he was just staring right at Jean as his long hair swished along with the fresh seaside breeze. When Jean noticed him staring, Marco immediately looked away and back at the sunset. His shifting eyes and the blush on his face got Jean concerned.

"You okay? Is something wrong?"

This time Marco replied with a steady nod.

They continued to search their surroundings for a while till it decided to head back inside to unpack their bags, and maybe even sleep in early after the long travel that day.

The next day was the day of the music festival. Jean and Marco have been very excited for it the whole day, but still felt a little unprepared since they just arrived the previous day. Still, the festival wasn't until later that night at 5:30pm, so they managed their brief time to prepare. First, they had a nice nutritious breakfast in the restaurant downstairs then because of how bright and sunny it was, spend most of the afternoon inside their conditioned room. They booked to be there for a whole week so they'll still have time to try out the pool or visit the local area around them.

It was about 5:10pm. Nearing the time when the music festival started. Jean was dressed in a white short-sleeved t shirt with his favourite band's name printed on it, along with some cargo shorts and some sandals. Marco wore just a plain pastel pink polo shirt, complete with his favourite denim shorts he's been wearing all summer. After one last check around the room to see if they forgotten anything, which they hadn't, they head out the hotel room together.

When they arrived at the beach, there were almost over a hundred people surrounding the lighted up stage. All were talking among themselves which caused a lot of noise out all at once, some were wearing clothes to support their bands like Jean was doing, some had children riding on their shoulders and some were waving glowsticks in the air. Jean was really getting excited, but couldn't help but notice a linger of stress in Marco's eyes, despising the happy smile on his face. The man tried his best to ignore it to enjoy the festival, and good timing too, because it was just about to start.

The announcer walked out onto the stage, dressed in the most casual summer outfit that you can imagine. He first welcomed all the music lovers to the festival before going down a list of most of the bands that will be performing that night. After a few more words, the announcer introduced the first singer before leaving the stage. Everyone cheered, shouted and clapped their hands in excitement - Jean included for it was one singer that he was truly a fan of.

Everyone was clapping and cheering along with the singer as they were performing one of their best hits; with a rocking electric guitar and a loud soprano vocal range to compliment it. Jean was having a blast, that is until he looked over at his boyfriend beside him. Marco was hardly covering his ears with his palms, shutting his eyes tight as the music was too loud for him to take. Jean's smile faded away when he was aware of it was really bothering poor Marco so he wrapped his arm around Marco's shoulder, shifted pass all the people in the crowd, excusing them to move, and walked away once they made it out.

The pair kept walking and walking until the sounds and music were only like a whistle to their ears. Marco felt comfortable enough to remove his hands from his ears, a relieved Jean gave out a big sigh.

"You never told me that you were so sensitive to loud music, Marco. You should have let me know that before we left." Jean wasn't angry with Marco, not even close, but he still had the stern tone in his voice which Marco a bit upset.

Marco assured him with shaking his head. He signalled him by pointing at his ear then took both open hands, palms facing down, and moved them sideways in unison.

"Oh. You just didn't expect it to be that loud, did ya?" Jean replied, snickering under his breath.

Both of them took a seat on the bright, dusty sand of the beach, the dry texture already between their fingertips. The sun was at the mid-point of setting and the way it looked, with the mixture of bright orange and yellow, brought a smile upon both of their faces. The beams of sunlight shone in their eyes as they squint a bit to protect them from it. But to Jean, no matter how beautiful the sun can look on any day, it can't top Marco's bright sunshine smile.

To think that when they were just beginning their college lives, they barely knew anything about each other, to the point where they didn't think they'd get along, (mainly on Jean's part) but look at them now. Boyfriends who're enjoying a trip away together on a lovely romantic beach. It sounded crazy to Jean that he would ever feel such feelings ever again, that he'd ever feel happiness with someone else entirely, especially with one that couldn't even speak. He looked over at Marco with such bliss in his expression.

"You know, Marco?" He started. "I don't think I can ever see us ever going apart. Unlike what happened before... and I'm not talking about our fight."

Marco tilted his head in confusion - glancing at his boyfriend's saddened face. Jean closed his eyes and rubbed his neck with his free palm, getting grains of sand stuck between strands of his hair.

"I... never though about telling you this ever, but I feel like now is better than never. You see, before I accessed into college... I was dating someone."

The confusion sprung into genuine shock on Marco's face. Already dating someone? Even though he never had such interest in dating when he met him? The freckled man softens up and listens very carefully to the rest of the story.

"I know what you're thinking. Dating someone even if I'd shown no interest before? But at the time it wasn't really that bad. The girl was pretty tame for the most part; polite, thoughtful and even had short black hair like you. We dated throughout most of our High School years. But when college or university came into play, she somehow decided to go abroad. Something to do with her family or some shit, I don't know - I forgot. Anyway, she just gave me the news and that was the last time I heard from her."

He paused for a moment to sink the heavy feeling in.

"I still wasn't over it when I moved away from home to college, I felt like I was never gonna going to forget. Until I met you that is." Jean turned over so that he's facing Marco. "Sure I didn't thought much of you at first, probably 'cause I wasn't an expert on sign language, but I now realise how being with you had helped me. To lighten up and forget about being dumped, to move on with someone who deeply cares about me a lot, my life would never had made the right turn for the better without you."

Tears were starting to build up in Jean's eyes - he's really letting out his honest emotions at this point. Marco noticed and wiped away what he could see falling down his cheek. The look in his eyes he gave in return made Jean felt all warm inside, completed with the same bright smile allowed Jean to understand what was Marco's message to him.

'It's okay. I'll never leave you, Jean.'

Jean smiled blissfully and placing his hand over Marco's, which was still gently rubbing his cheek to wipe away tears. It felt so nice to have such a wonder like Marco in his life, to have someone who can communicate ways to show how much he loved him without saying a single word. His smile, those big brown eyes, the tender touch from his hands, everything about this sweet man means the world to Jean and would not dare to lose him ever. Just as Jean was able to calm his tears, the more he stared at Marco, the more he found himself looking down at his lips. When it caught his eye, Marco began leaning in closer towards Jean's face. Jean followed through and as soon as their foreheads collided, the pair closed their eyes as their mouths pressed together softly.

The kiss was so genuine and relaxing - starting off as slowly as possible to take in the feeling. Jean cupped Marco's face to bring him in closer as they slightly added a light tongue in there. It wasn't too much though, as the couple broke it to allow some air before taking another quick shot at it. After a few more seconds of a soothing kiss, they broke it once more but kept their eyes on each other. Jean quickly noticed that Marco's face went all rosy red, similarly to how it looked on the balcony yesterday. Jean came to the realization.

"Is... is this what you wanted to do since we got here? You are such an idiot."

A giggle impression came out from Marco. The two lovers pulled in each other for a hug as the sunset shone for brilliantly than before.
