Work Text:

When you love, you give a part of yourself, willingly you let the other have a part of you that would never recover.

At first Lumine thought that was an exaggeration, someone with a broken heart being mean about love, which could be understood under certain circumstances. Because for her love was freedom, was the opportunity to hold the universe in her hands and choose to hold someone’s hand instead.

But that was probably because she had never truly fallen in love before. She had loved of course, she loved her brother with all her being, she also loved her friends, and she did have lovers in the past.

Yet nothing could compare to what she felt the moment she acknowledged her own feelings for the Harbinger in front of her. He had been an ally, a friend, an enemy, a comrade as he called her. And she was completely a mess. This was nothing compared to anything she had ever felt.

She had fallen hard for him, to the point that for months he was living in her mind almost all the time, trying to focus on anything else than the feelings she had for the snezhnayan. Yet at the end of the day, while pretending to sleep the only thought that could keep her going was the idea to hold his hand. A foolish dream, because he was an enemy, and she was the savior. He was the Harbinger and she was the Traveler, destined to cross paths but nothing more.

She had to remind herself that she was probably way older than him, and that all his life would be a mere second to all her centuries traveling the universe.

But it wasn’t that easy, because her heart was doing whatever it wanted, jumping at the sight of his red hair, feeling all giddy at all the times he called for her. Even in the middle of the battlefield her feelings were as present as the first day. Even if she pretended to be the same, to not feel anything romantic towards him her heart knew better.

And when her weapon clashed against nothing could stop her from saying it out loud.

“I love you.” She said, going against the man that had lived in her mind and heart for years.

“I do to.” He answered, taking her whole heart in his hand with her words.

She gave him her most broken smile, trying to gather the strength to say anything else. But everything was said, there was nothing else waiting for them. Especially after her sword had taken both his life and her heart.

And so, she understood that she loved him the way she never did, the way she would never again. There was nothing else waiting to be loved, there was nothing else worth being loved.
