"You said it in a simple way, I told myself, don't get attached"
Lena could never forget when Kara first asked her out. One day Lena was talking to CatCo's ace reporter for an exclusive interview. The next day, the same bubbly blonde girl was asking Lena if she had plans that evening.
"What's the harm in it? Lena remembered thinking to herself. It sounded better than spending the night alone in her office, tinkering away on a project.
"And this is when the feeling sinks in, The delicate beginning rush"
All it took was one night with Kara for Lena to get attached. After just an hour spent together, Lena felt closer to Kara than she did to any of her Luthor family.
A blue eyed sunbeam had just bounced into her life and Lena didn't want to let her go. She just wanted to stay in that moment and see Kara in the afterglow.
"Taxi cabs and busy streets"
One hour became two hours and finally, Lena had decided to call it a night. Kara was taking a taxi cab home so Lena waited with her on a busy National City street.
The late night taxi rush had been so bad that they had to wait half an hour for the cab to come. This meant more talking and inevitably, it meant kissing. Awkward, fumbling kisses at first. Both women stopped initially. "I'm so sorry," Kara had apologized. "I swear, I usually never kiss on the first date. I'm not that kind of girl."
"That's a shame," Lena had replied. "I'm really liking the kind of girl you are right now." This had led to Kara's cheeks going redder than a tomato. All of this made Kara all the more endearing to Lena.
When Kara had recovered, Lena had gone back to what she was good at. Her lips and tongue working their magic while Kara tried to keep up. By the time the taxi finally arrived, Kara pulled Lena into the backseat with her.
The short journey to Kara's apartment was a welcome relief. Five minutes longer and Lena was afraid she might do more than just kiss Kara, even if there was an uncomfortable taxi man trying not to look.
Kara's couch was closest to the door when the two women entered. Lena was halfway to taking Kara's dress off when Kara stopped her. "Let's do this in my bedroom," Kara had suggested. "It's a really comfortable bed."
"Good to know I'm gonna be spending the night," Lena answered cheekily.
"This is falling in love in the cruelest way
This is falling for you and you are worlds away"
Lena couldn't stand the thought of Kara leaving. Months had passed since their first date and the relationship was feeling more perfect every day. When Kara broke the news that she was going abroad for a while to work on a story, Lena's mind had begun to spiral.
"How long are you going away?" Lena asked. "Just a few months," Kara answered apologetically. "I'll be back before you know it."
"Is something wrong?" Lena inquired. "You never even gave me a warning sign."
"No, nothings wrong, it's just an important work assignment," Kara reassured her. "We can still talk on the phone every day."
"Okay, as long as there's nothing that you think we should be talking about," Lena replied. "I'm going to hold you to that phone call every day."
"If you want me to stay, all you have to do is ask," Kara offered.
"No, it's fine," Lena responded reluctantly. "You should go, it sounds important."
In reality, Lena didn't want Kara to go. Lena knew that this relationship was something special. She liked Kara, and was starting to worry that she might love Kara. This wasn't something she could say after just a few months though.
This felt like the healthiest relationship Lena had ever had with someone. She wasn't going to let herself ruin it by moving too fast and scaring off the most important person in her life. Maybe if she was a little bit braver she would have asked Kara to stay. But past experiences meant Lena kept quiet.
"I don't wanna miss you like this
Come back, be here"
Kara had now been gone for weeks. The daily phone calls had stopped and Lena was beginning to feel more and more alone. "Well, you've really done it now," Lena thought to herself. "Now the only time you'll ever see Kara is in your wildest dreams."
Why didn't Lena just ask Kara to stay? She had the perfect opportunity but she let it slip away, like sand slipping through her fingers, carried away by the wind never to be seen again.
Lena didn't want to miss Kara anymore. She just wanted her to come back and be here with her. Maybe it wasn't too late, maybe one last phone call could save them.
After a tense few seconds of rings, Kara picked up. "Hello? Lena, is that you?" There was surprise in Kara's voice. "I didn't know if you were gonna call again. It's been a while."
"I know, I'm sorry," Lena began. "I wanted to call but I was afraid that you just wouldn't pick up. The truth is, I really really like you, and I should have asked you to stay. In fact," Lena paused, making her best effort to ignore any negative thoughts in her head, "I think I might be in love with you."
Silence followed this confession. Lena was ready to hang up before Kara had a chance to reject her. "You love me?" Kara questioned.
"It's too soon right?" Lena began apologetically. "Just forget I blurted that out. That was stupid, I'm stupid. Let's just go back to -"
"I'm in love with you too," Kara interrupted. "You're not stupid Lena. I've been feeling the exact same way. I just thought that when you told me I should go that you weren't that interested in me."
"Really?" Lena queried. "In that case, can you come back? I don't want to miss you anymore. Can you please come home?"
"Of course I can," Kara answered happily. "Home is wherever you are. It's not home without you."
And with that, Kara and Lena's love story continued. Romeo saved Juliet when she was feeling so alone. The moon was high on the night of their wedding and they got married with gold rings. But they would have done it with paper rings. All that mattered was that they were together. Their relationship would never go out of style.
