Work Text:
As much as Ava loved the fact that Sara was having her second baby, the fact that this was another unplanned blessing made her nervous. If so much as thinking the word baby could put Sara into ovulation and then a kiss can result in a baby they needed some form of birth control because simply not kissing was not going to happen.
Ava would rather have 50 kids than never kiss her wife again.
Ava was pretty sure she had a work around. If thinking baby could result in a pregnancy then all they needed to do was not think when kissing and or getting busy.
…
Rip was not an easy baby. He cried nonstop and wanted nothing to do with the pacifiers or bottles. Ava wished he would take a bottle just so that Sara could have a break but Rip was not having it.
Lori was clinging to Ava since Sara usually had her arms full with Rip. Lori wasn’t jealous of Rip, not in any real sense, she didn’t seem upset that this new baby was getting attention, she just seemed sad that she couldn’t cuddle with Sara all day. She also had no idea why she couldn’t pick up and carry Rip.
Sara had just gotten Rip down. He was in the bassinet next to the bed, Sara was out cold getting what little sleep she could whenever she could.
Ava knew she made the right call to take off time from work because it seemed just cruel to leave Sara with a 2-month-old and an almost 2-year-old alone.
Sure Sara’s parents wanted to come and help out all the time but Ava could take the time off and she didn’t want to miss time with her kids if she didn’t have to.
Lori was already gone to bed.
Ava still had to clean up from dinner and the day but she couldn’t help herself but test her theory. She bent down and gave Sara a gentle kiss before tucking her into the bed.
“Night night babe.”
…
One day they were watching 20/20 and it was covering genetic testing for medical histories and how x amount of people had genetic markers for horrible terminal diseases.
So they made a call to the only person they knew who knew alien genetics as well as human, so once again Ava was forced into a room with someone who fucked her wife. Alex Danvers.
“I’ll check for all the usual markers and if anything seems wrong I’ll do a deep search on it. Any particular disease you want me to look out for?” Alex asked from her chair in her lab.
“Not really, we just have no idea what Ava’s genes might hold and who knows what my alien DNA might mean in the future.” Sara answered for them both.
“Okay, so I’m just going to take some blood from you both, and a quick swab then it’s done and in like a week I’ll have all the tests done.” Alex explained that it was nothing as she gathered the materials she needed to get said samples.
“Can you find out what percentage of alien I am?”
“Yeah, I can get a rough estimate.” Alex started tying the band around Sara’s so she could find a vein. She slipped the needle in and drew out the blood. When she pressed a cloth to the hole and asked Sara to keep pressure on it, Sara just lifted the cloth up and frowned.
Ava looked over at her arm and paled slightly before blinking a few times and giving Sara a grin.
Alex looked between them and then at the wound.
“How are you pregnant again, you have a 3-month-old.” Alex just seemed shocked.
“I get knocked up with a kiss if I so much as think the word baby. What I need is some way to control this.” Sara was not thinking about how hard it will be to have 3 babies under 3.
Alex went over to a cabinet and pulled out what looked like a complicated technical bracelet.
“Here, this should work. It’s a power dampener we used in the DEO.”
“You had this the entire time?”
“You never asked.”
…
Ava was reading the results of her DNA test. No only did Alex check for diseases but she also for the fun of it checked it for ancestry.
Ava was 85% Irish and 15% a mix of others.
“I have some idea of my family…of who the original…was there an original…”
“Hey, I could have told you, you were Irish the first night I saw you drink. That is an Irish tolerance.” Sara pulled Ava closer to her.
“We should visit Ireland.”
“Sure. We’ll take a toddler and an infant to a different continent on like an 80-hour flight.” Sara laughed. “I would love to visit Ireland with you babe but it's not gonna happen any time soon while we are stuck travelling by plane. But we know a lot of people, I’m sure someone knows an Irishman you can ask about your heritage.”
…
“Guess who’s Irish?” Sara beamed as Ava entered the room.
“Who?”
“Kara’s girlfriend and they are expecting our call.”
“That’s amazing, call them now.”
Sara loved how excited Ava was.
“ Sara! Congratulations on your third baby oh my god you must be so excited! ” Kara sounded too peppy for Sara to handle at her current energy level.
“Thanks Kara we’re excited. Is Lena around?”
“ I’m right here. ” Lena answered. “ What did you want to talk to me about? ”
“Well we found out recently that Ava is Irish and since you’re also Irish-”
“ I’m not Irish. ” Lena sounded so confused.
“ Yes you are. You told me you were Irish, you went to Ireland to check out your mom’s childhood home. ”
“ Newfoundland. I went to Newfoundland. It’s in Canada, far East Canada but still Canada. ”
“ Pretty sure I heard someone call you her wee wain which according to Derry Girls is Irish. ” Kara seemed convinced that it was her girlfriend that was mistaken.
“ Newfoundland was founded by the Irish and due to the attitude of what they call Mainland Canada, they have stuck pretty close to their Irish roots with the same accent, slang and cultures. ” Lena never thought she would be giving a TED talk on how Newfoundland was basically New Ireland to her girlfriend and her girlfriend’s friends.
“So you know the culture?” Sara figured it was a good time to ask.
“ Kind of yes. We can meet up and discuss it if you want, but I don’t know much. I can offer you my jet if you would like to use that to travel there. ”
“Thank you for the offer but even on a private jet travelling with a toddler and an infant is just going to be a nightmare.”
“ I could fly you all there. ” Kara offered.
“Sorry, what?”
“ I can fly you all there, I’ll bring one of you there first, then the babies, and then whoever stayed behind. I could do it in 3 trips, like five minutes of travel time tops. Not to brag but I can easily break the sound barrier. ”
“As safe as travelling fast enough to break the sound barrier sounds for babies-” Ava started.
“ Kara you can’t fly that fast with babies. ” Lena scolded her. “ My offer has no time limit. Whenever you feel it is possible for you to travel there, the plane is just a phone call away. ”
“Ava you can go. Since Rip won’t take a bottle I’m attached to him but you’re not. You can go.” Sara offered.
…
Ava spent a week in Ireland facetime her family for hours on end telling Sara everything she learnt.
When she came home she had a book of classic Irish names.
“I was thinking since we named Lori after Laurel, and Rip after Rip and Martin, for the next one since we have no one left to honor that has passed…”
“You mean no one left that I haven’t slept with because you refuse to even have Oliver as a second middle name.” Sara corrected.
“I want to give our next baby a traditional Irish name.” Ava was never going to have the Oliver middle name discussion again.
“Okay. Since I know how you are, you already a top 5 for each don’t you?”
“My top runners are Aoife for a girl and Keir for a boy.” Ava showed her in the book.
“Oh it’s going to be fun hearing people try to pronounce them or spell them. I’m good with them. No vetos. We are having either an Aoife or a Keir.”
…
Before they knew it Sara was giving birth to a healthy baby Aoife who was the calmest, happiest baby they ever saw, who at 15 months found out she was going to be a big sister.
Sara stormed into Alex’s lab.
“Your dampener didn’t work. I got knocked up again.”
“Well, it took longer than 2 months this time so it worked a bit.” Alex pointed out clearly finding the situation funnier than Sara.
“Can you just see what you can do to fix it?”
“Sure.” Alex hooked the bracelet up to a computer. “It shows its working perfectly.”
“Fine, I’ll get Ray to look at it.”
“Palmer? He has no experience with alien DNA.”
“No but he does with powers. So does Cisco.”
Alex just handed it back to Sara.
“I hope they can get it to work then for you. But if they can’t I can try tying your tubes. Unless your wife will have a problem with that.”
…
After baby number 4, Keir was born Sara and Ava were confident that the new and improved dampener would work.
Ray even staked one of his PhDs on it. The PhD was now displayed in their basement as they awaited baby number 5.
While Ray was at their home examining how his devices failed, Nora and Damien were over for a play date.
“We need to get this solved, last thing we need is Lori getting pregnant in middle school.” Ava stressed.
“Why don’t you make a wish?” Nora suggested.
“Would that work?”
“We could try. Wish for gems or jewellery, or something to block the reproductive effects of your alien DNA.” Nora shrugged.
“Okay. I wish for 6 gems, small enough to fit on a ring, that can block the reproductive effects of my alien DNA without stopping my healing stuff.” Sara tried.
Soon 6 gems appeared on the coffee table in front of Sara.
“We can make holders for them to fit everyone’s styles later.”
“We should add it to your wedding ring.” Ava suggested. “You never have that off.”
“Don’t use tech to solve what you need magic for.” Nora smirked clearly proud of herself.
After Áine was born they had no more pregnancy scares.
It was great because Sara had told Ava she would rather kill herself then have to buy a mini bus to transport their family.
