Work Text:
There's something so light about Jack. He's sitting up on Derek's shoulders, proudly waving the sign that they made together. Jack's been aware of Derek's relationship with Aaron for the past two months. Bonding with the little man has been nothing short of joyful.
Nobody on the team knows. They haven't discussed telling them yet. It's hard to navigate. Aaron came out recently to them over dinner. They all accepted him readily but Derek's not sure if he'll receive the same warmth. It sounds silly when he thinks about it. Why wouldn't they accept him? He's dealt with so much homophobia and general crap about it that it's where his mind first goes to. Reid would call it a defence mechanism. Preparing himself for vitriol and hate so that he's not disappointed. Can't be betrayed if you see it coming.
"Do you see him uncle Dave?" Jack asks.
"I think I do kiddo! Look!" Rossi points down the way and there he is. Aaron Hotchner.
He's drenched in sweat, black t-shirt sticking to his skin, but there's a smile on his face. It's rare to see him smile in public but it's a sight that makes Derek grin as well. Soon enough Aaron crosses the finish line and makes the slow jog to the water bottle stand. An officiant places a medal over his head and Derek sets Jack down, letting him run over to Aaron before the team follows.
Aaron takes off the medal and puts it on Jack, "This is for you buddy."
Derek is the first out of the team to get there. He claps Aaron on the shoulder, "You look awful."
"You look handsome though so it makes up for it." Aaron leans in and kisses him. It's so brief, just a brush of their lips, but so perfect. Derek kisses him back as the rest of the world melts away.
"Oh my god." Penelope blurts out.
Shit. Shit. Derek steps back away from Aaron but his partner catches his hand and holds it. He looks to the team like a wild animal that's been caught in a track. Instead of horror and disgust, there's surprise and warmth.
"How long?" Reid asks.
"Eight months."
"Seven months."
Aaron looks at Derek, "It's eight."
"It's seven."
"It's been eight months since yesterday."
"Wait really?" Derek takes out his phone and looks at his calendar. It has been eight months. The case took up all his time.
"I'm sorry you've been dating for eight months and you never told me?" Penelope crosses her arms. "Derek Morgan you are a lot of bad words I can't say right now because Jack is present."
"I'm sorry. There was never a good time."
"I've known for two months." Jack says suddenly.
"Oh so Jack gets to know but we don't?" JJ smiles at him.
"So you're not mad?" Derek looks between them all.
"Does Erin know?" Rossi asks.
"The paperwork is on her desk. It's just under all of the other paperwork." Aaron gives him a smile.
"Well played Aaron. Well played."
Aaron cups Derek's face and pushes his jaw so that he's looking into Aaron's eyes. "I love you."
"I love you too. Now please go take a shower. You smell like a boy's middle school locker room."
